Item #: SCP-5000
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: Do not enter SCP-5000. The porthole window on SCP-5000 must remain covered. Locks have been added to the pressure doors inside of of SCP-5000. Both of these doors are to remain locked.
Description: SCP-5000 is a 20 meter long by 3 meter wide tank with one external hatch. There is a 30 centimeter porthole window riveted into the external hatch. Inside of the tank there are two additional doors at either end. The two round pressure doors do not correspond to any external feature of SCP-5000.
When either of the two pressure doors are opened all that is visible inside is light. If a person travels through either of the pressure doors they will move perpendicular to the standard flow of time by 1 week.
There is an analog gauge at one end of SCP-5000. This should always read zero. Alert security immediately if it fluctuates. There is also a dial set to 168. The further the dial is rotated away from 168, the more unstable SCP-5000 becomes.
Experiment One:
Notes: This footage is recorded by researcher Harlan Smith. His voice can be throughout the video along with Dr. Waylen who remains outside of SCP-5000.
Dr. Waylen: Okay, Harlan. Take your time and describe what you're experiencing.
Harlan: Right now, I am entering SCP-5000. I have a body-mounted camera, auto-darkening welding goggles, a headlamp, a notepad, two pens, and one meter wooden rod. I'm nervous, but nothing anomalous.
< The video moves through the open hatch and into SCP-5000. The spotlight from Harlan's headlamp glides across the interior surface of SCP-5000. Everything is smooth steel. The light rests on the pressure door at one end of the cylinder. >
Harlan: Okay, still feeling normal. I'm approaching the pressure door.
< Harlan's hands turn the wheel to unlock the round pressure door. He opens the door and reveals more blank steel behind it. Harlan taps the wooden rod against the metal surface. >
Harlan: There is solid metal behind the east pressure door. And—OH.
< The light from Harlan's headlamp whips out of the camera frame. >
Dr. Waylen: We're shutting the external hatch. Be alert for changes inside of SCP-5000.
Harlan: I hear bees. Do you hear that?
Dr. Waylen: Everything is normal out here, Harlan. Keep talking.
Harlan: Feels like somebody is putting things inside of me.
Dr. Waylen: What kind of things, Harlan?
Harlan: Oh man, like bugs. Ants. I feel like I have ants instead of blood. My hair feels like it's crawling across my skin. Something larval is squirming in my legs. They feel unsteady. Do you see this?
Dr. Waylen: You look fine Harlan.
Harlan: Not me, Waylen. The surface of SCP-5000. It's getting brighter. Glowing. The goggles are working. They keep making things darker, but the light keeps getting brighter. It's not hot, but it's like looking into a fire. The pressure hatch is almost completely invisible now. I feel like I'm looking through it. My hands are just silhouettes. The circle of light is so bright I can't really see anything else. It stabilized now. It's not increasing or wavering.
Dr. Waylen: That's perfect Harlan. Try the rod again to test for stability.
< In the video feed Harlan slowly inserts the rod into the light. It's only a line of blackness against the glow. Harlan pushes the rod further and further in beyond where SCP-5000 previously ended. Harlan stops short of putting his hand into glow. >
Harlan: The rod is inside, Waylen.
Dr. Waylen: You're doing fine. Feel around and make sure you have a place to step.
Harlan: It's narrower in there. I'll have to crouch, but it feels like I can walk right in.
Dr. Waylen: Go, go ahead, Harlan-an.
Harlan: I'm crawling through the pressure hatch. I hear those bees all around me.
Dr. Waylen: Harlan, Harlan, Harlan, you, Harlan, you, Harlan are you, Harlan, are you up? Breaking Harlan, breaking.
Harlan: Oh man, I can still hear Dr. Waylen's voice over the radio. The words are coming over all scrambled up and repeated. I can't see anything inside of this tunnel. It is a tunnel. There's a surface on every side of me. I am constantly tapping, and, oh. I'm at the end of the tunnel. I'm feeling things out. There's another door here, with another locking wheel in the center. I'm going to try to open this. I can feel it rotating in my hands, but only just barely. My skin is tingling. I can gear the bolt sliding open, but that humming sound nearly drowns it out. I can't really see the door at all. Okay, I'm opening it slowly.
Dr. Waylen: Harlan, Harlan, somebody, Somebody Harlan, else is with you in there.
< the video feed is mostly white static. It gradually adjusts to the light as Harlan, shuts the pressure door behind him. He is back inside of SCP-5000. His headlamp darts around the cylinder in confusion. >
Dr. Waylen: Can you hear me?
Harlan: Now I can. I hear you fine, Dr. Waylen. I'm back inside. On the other side. Yeah, on the other side of SCP-5000. I thought I somehow turned around in there, but I walked in a straight line. The buzzing is dying down now that the pressure door is shut behind me.
Dr. Waylen: Harlan, we're going to open the external hatch now. You can come out and we'll do the psych eval.
Harlan: So it's just a loop, then. I was nervous over nothing.
Experiment Two:
Subject: Harlen Smith
Title: Researcher
Health: Normal
Notes: After returning from SCP-5000, Harlan Smith appeared healthy, but failed an identity test. A second identity questionnaire was provided to Mr. Smith. He failed it also. This third questionnaire provided insight into Mr. Smith's defect.
Question 1: Okay, Harlan. Take your time and described what you're experiencing.
Experiment Three:
Harlan is sent through the other pressure door. He comes out the other side again. An Interview reveals that his memories are now normal.
Theory:
The pressure doors lead to branched realities. Time separates reality so gradually, that adjacent realities are nearly indistinguishable from ours.
Experiment Four:
Harlan is sent on a day long expedition through SCP-5000. He continually walks through the tunnel with a backpack full of supplies, stopping to give interviews with each parallel team of researchers. The further he gets from his reality, the more the timeline has diverged and the more the reality differs.
Also Experiment Four:
A parade of Harlan's wearing auto-darkening welding goggles walk through SCP-5000. The researchers conduct video interviews of them from behind the locked external hatch. The final Harlan is blind. He comes from a world where everyone is blind, and thinks our world is likely contaminated by the memetic hazard. The blind Harlan is the final one.
Experiment Five:
Harlan goes through SCP-5000 in the opposite direction. Very similar to experiment four. When Harlan reaches the world adjacent to the blind world, there are a team of unblind Harlans planning an expedition with the researchers. Our Harlan is briefed on the situation, and watches video footage of the first expedition into the blind world.
The Video:
Mostly in night vision. Blind researchers interview Harlan to see if he's been contaminated by the memetic hazard. The researchers say Harlan is safe to exit SCP-5000, because there are no lights or windows in the room. Harlan continues filming in night vision but stops watching the footage to avoid the memetic hazard. The researchers explain how the Foundation in their world was unable to prevent a viral cognitohazard from spreading several decades ago. The cognitohazard was visual in nature, so the Foundation was able to save the world, by blinding people at birth. There's effectively nobody in this world that can see.
Video footage shows that ceiling is crawling with five-legged arthropods. They are roughly star shaped with an eye in the center of their body. Harlan says he feels like he should go and the blind researchers agree. When Harlan turns back to SCP-5000, the video shows an arthropod entering it. Harlan returns to his world, where the arthropod is immediately recognized on video as a psychic SCP from their world. They quarantine their Harlan and the arthropod.
After the Video:
Our Harlan leaves. SCP-5000 is welded shut.

SCP-5000 was likely adapted from a T14 ISO tank container.
