Item #: SCP-####
Object Class: Safe Temporary upgrade to Euclid, pending review (see incident SCP-####-I-C)

Special Containment Procedures: The original SCP-#### instance is to be stored in a 1m x 1m x 1m Safe in Site 64, the combination to which is to be kept by the Site Director. SCP-#### is to be locked with a leather strap and a small padlock with the key in possession of the senior researcher assigned to work on SCP-####. If no experiment is ongoing, the key is to be in possession of the Site Director. Other copies of SCP-#### are to be tested to determine if they possess the same anomalous properties. Once tested they may be stored in another safe or incinerated. Testing temporarily halted, (see incident SCP-####-I-C).
Access to SCP-#### requires the approval of two class three personal. Anyone currently reading SCP-#### is designated SCP-####-A until the book is finished, at which point they are redesignated as SCP-####-1. SCP-####-A is to be furnished with one reading desk, a lamp, a glass of water, reading glasses or contacts if needed, and SCP-####. Additional water or snacks may be provided.
Description: SCP-#### is a blue hardcover book, titled "Choose Your Own Adventure" in faded gold lettering, with no author's name present. Examination by a remote drone shows 188 pages, though subjects report the book as much longer, ranging from 512 pages, reported by SCP-####-1.9 to 1254 Pages, reported by SCP-####-1.19. The average length of the book is 874 pages.
The book opens to a preface of 4 pages marked with Roman numerals. These pages have no anomalous effects but have some anomalous properties. (See addendum SCP-####-L-1)
The only page reported consistently the same is page 1 of the story, which says “You are (name of SCP-####-A), you are the author, and this is your story”. From here the book will tell the story of SCP-####-A, (SCP-####-A will be referred to as just -A herein). The first 16 years of the Subjects life are reported as being accurate, regardless of choices made. As the youngest reported -A was 17, it is unknown how it would affect a subject below 16. Assuming the subject is above 20, the years 16-20 will be fairly accurate. Names and exact dates will change, and the tale will have some embellishment, but the general story will be accurate. At this point, the memories made by SCP-#### will be explained away by -A as just fiction. Events occurring between the ages of 20 and 25 will have even more changes and embellishment, with only the barest of details remaining true to life. By this point, the subject will begin to question true memories and start to lend increasing credence to the memories of SCP-####. Between 25-30 the story of SCP-#### will begin to diverge entirely from reality if -A is above 30 or become increasingly fanciful if -A is below 30. At this point, Amnestics are still effective in removing all memories created by SCP-####.
Between 30-40 all vestiges of accuracy with -A’s real life are gone, and the stories will become even more unrealistic. After age 40, -A will begin to ignore real memories and believe SCP-#### based memories religiously, discarding all memories that disagree with ####’s version of events. At this point, the application of Amnestics will have a permanently damaging effect on -A’s psyche. Deployment of class-A Amnestics on -A.16 on 5/11/1997 led to -A.16 being reduced to a childlike state, with all memories being wiped out.
After this time another one of SCP-####’s anomalous effects appears. Once past the age of 40, memories created by SCP-#### will be unaffected by the application of Amnestics. Even class-A Amnestics will only be effective for a few minutes before memories start to filter back. From ages 40-75 the effects of SCP-#### will grow worse, memories totally disconnecting from reality. SCP-#### based memories will become fantastical and in some cases physically impossible. By this point -A will become obsessed with SCP-####, by age 50 refusing to put the book down and becoming violent if separated from SCP-####. In one experiment -A.21 was moved from containment room where he was reading to a live firing range, where several MTF members were practicing weapon drills. -A.21 repeatedly requested that they “Turn that dammed racket down” but never looked up from the book, which escorting personal reported as blank.
Finishing the book, which uniformly occurs when the book reports -A as turning 75, -A will become an instance of SCP-####-1. -1 will always refer to themselves as being 75, regardless of whether they are biologically older or younger. -1 instance tend to be highly paranoid, often claiming they are being followed or stalked for some reason by persons or entities unknown. (See Incident report SCP-####-I-A). -1 will also write or type long, rambling letters to no one in particular. These letters describe -1 memories, worries and beliefs. These letters contain numerous grammatical mistakes. In one case an entire 2-page letter consisted of one run-on sentence.
Use of Amnestics on -1’s has the opposite of intended effects, use of class A Amnestics on several -1 instance has lead to all memories not caused by SCP-#### to be wiped out, and the personality of the subject before reading the book will be gone, fully replaced by SCP-####-1.
Recovery Log: SCP-#### came to foundation attention after 7 people (SCP-####-1.1-.7) in the town of ███████, British Columbia, Canada, were admitted into a local mental hospital with severe mental problems. All claimed to be around 75 years old and were suffering from severe hallucinations. After incident SCP-####-I-A, PTF-####, operating under call sign Omicron 26 “Book-worms” was formed to investigate the town and secure SCP-####. SCP-#### was found in the possession of -1.9 who engaged foundation personal in a brief struggle, lightly wounding one agent. -1.9 was shot once in the arm and leg by foundation agents in order to contain them. Since then ██ further instances of SCP-#### were found and secured. At the moment only SCP-####.1, the original instance, is to be used for research purposes beyond basic testing of anomalous properties. MTF Omicron 26 is to be mobilized whenever an instance of SCP-#### is reported, or someone with symptoms similar to SCP-####-1 is reported.
As of 8/9/2017 ██ Instances of SCP-#### have been reported. In total ██ instances of SCP-####-1 have been reported, of which ██ have been from foundation experiments.
Addendum SCP-####-L-1: The Preface (Consisting of pages I-IV) of SCP-#### all report the same information. The first page is blank, except for a page number of I. Page II says the book was published by the ████████ ████ Publishing Company. All instances of SCP-####-1 claim that SCP-#### was published in Los Angeles, however, ████████ ████ Publishing has no facilities in Los Angeles and hadn't been founded until 1983, several years after the original instance of SCP-####-1 claims the book was published, 1976. For further information see Incident report SCP-####-I-B.
Incident report SCP-####-I-A: 3/8/1993: SCP-####-1.8, real name, J████ E█████, had come into possession of SCP-#### from the local library on 2/7/1993. After reading the book and becoming an instance of SCP-####-1 she became a recluse and spend most of her time in her house, only venturing out in the evenings, and never for long periods of time. She had written several long letters claiming that 3 individuals, one female and two male, had been following her for several months, attempting to kidnap her to extort a large sum of money from a lottery she believed she had won. At 11:15 pm, 3/8/1993, three individuals, matching the description of the three stalkers walked in front of -1.8’s home. -1.8 stepped out the house with a handgun and shot at them, firing nine shots at the three, scoring five hits. One of the males was killed instantly, shot in the chest and neck, the female died on the scene later, bleeding out from wounds in the leg and stomach. The other male was hit once in the back and was taken to a local hospital. Local police arrived at 11:23 and began a standoff with -1.8, which was ended by officer J███ L█████, who, at 12:48 AM, hit -1.8 twice from close range with a sidearm after -1.8 fired at a police negotiator The three dead were co-workers from the █████ company on a business trip to the area and had been returning from a restaurant to their hotel when they were killed.
Incident report SCP-####-I-B: On 6/5/2007 a contract and copyright renewal date of 6/5/2007 appeared on the second page of the preface on the copy of SCP-#### in foundation containment, now referred to as SCP-####.1. How this appeared is unknown. Since this time publishing of more copies of SCP-#### has begun on a fairly small, but growing scale. Note that before the renewal date, SCP-#### was assumed to be a single copy.
Addendum SCP-####-L-2: On 12/8/2011 PTF-#### was permanently mobilized into MTF Omicron 26 after a raid on a library in █████ ████, Mexico lead to the containment of three instances of SCP-####, the first time more than one had been seized from a location. MTF Omicron 26 is to maintain several agents covered as customs officials at the ports of ████████, Mexico, Los Angeles, USA, ████████ Vietnam, ██████, Indonesia, ████ ████, South Africa and ████████, France. Of all seizures of SCP-#### instances, nearly 90% can be traced to have passed through one of these ports.
Incident report SCP-####-I-C: 1/13/2012-1/23/2012. Following routine testing of one of the instances of SCP-#### from the above-mentioned Mexican raid, D-18961, a 28-year-old male, was assigned to read one of the seized copies. Testing proceeded normally, with D-18961 taking about 13 hours to finish the book, which was reported as 751 pages. Strangely, D-18961 did not demonstrate the usual agitation and paranoia of most SCP-####-1 instances and was placed back into confinement for psychological study. After 4 days of this, D-18961 led a mass breakout of 11 D-Class personnel from their cells and took 4 staff members hostage, having somehow acquired site security codes, and knowledge of several key locations on site, such as barracks and guard armories. The resulting hostage crisis lasted 5 days, leading to the deaths of 2 hostages and 1 site security personnel, 2 more wounded, as well as 11 of the 12 D-Class, D-18961 was captured wounded but alive. Interrogation of D-18961 revealed that in his life according to SCP-#### he had worked for the foundation as a senior security staff member at site 64, who had been imprisoned and given D-Class status after being blamed for a major onsite containment breach. Following this incident site 64’s director has banned testing of SCP-#### and submitted a request for Euclid classification.
