The Church of the Second Hytoth

Overview: The Church of the Second Hytoth is an occult organization that adheres to the extraterrestrial Ortothan religion. The central beliefs of the religion are that the current universe (the "Second Hytoth") was preceded by a different universe, which used to exist until it was consumed by an extrauniversal entity. A group of survivors fled to the Second Hytoth, seven of them ascending to godhood to ensure the universe's safety. These seven gods ("Koru-teusa") were active in the early universe, but have all have died except for the fourth ("Rakmou-leusan"). Rakmou-leusan is said to currently guard the universe from extrauniversal invaders ("Voruteut").

The stated goals of the Church are to aid Rakmou-leusan, preserve their life through bloodletting rituals, spread morals based on their actions, and to kill any and all Voruteut. The organization is relatively small and pacifistic, though they are active on a global scale. The group mainly speaks the Ortothan Extraterrestrial Language (OEL), which has been anomalously preserved since an unknown point in time. Human Ortothan belief systems are known to have existed by ~11000 BCE, though modern branches have only been developed in the past century.

Although the Church of the Second Hytoth is confined to Earth, the religion exists on interstellar scales in the form of various loosely connected sects. One of the largest discovered sects is the Terzan 2 Ortothan Coalition, a collection of alien entities inhabiting Globular Cluster Terzan 2, a star cluster orbiting the Milky Way Galaxy. Current information suggests that the Coalition is a loose militaristic alliance of civilizations which are at war with a group known as "Twelve Stars."

The only extraterrestrial Ortothan group known to have entered the solar system is Species of Interest 002. Research is limited, as few of their artifacts have survived to the present. SoI-002 is presumed to be extinct.

Overview: The Church of the Second Hytoth is an occult organization that adheres to the extraterrestrial Ortothan religion. The central beliefs of the religion are that the current universe, the "Second Hytoth," was preceded by a different universe, which used to exist until it was consumed by an extrauniversal entity. A group of survivors fled to the newly created Second Hytoth, with seven of them choosing to ascend to godhood to ensure the universe's safety.

These seven gods, the Holy Seven or "Koru-teusa," were active in the early universe, spreading religious beliefs intended to raise support for them while fighting against entities that posed a threat to the universe. However, their influence gradually decreased over time, and since the method by which the Koru-teusa ascended damaged their bodies in a way that made them continually bleed, lowered influence decreased the number of performed bloodletting rituals that would maintain their health. Members of the Koru-teusa progressively died, the latest death being that of the Holy Sixth ("Yorun-leusan") in 2000. The only member of the seven said to remain alive is the Holy Fourth ("Rakmou-leusan"), who protects against extrauniversal entities ("Voruteut") that are trying to invade the universe.

The Church of the Second Hytoth aims to accomplish each of the following goals:

To preserve of Rakmou-leusan's life through bloodletting rituals.
To spread the Ortothan religion and morals based on the actions of Rakmou-leusan.
To research the Ortothan pantheon, the First Hytoth, and unknown aspects of the Ortothan mythology.
To kill any and all Voruteut.

The organization is relatively small and pacifistic, though they are active on a global scale. Multiple churches are known to be operated in major cities, the largest being in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and many of these exist in pocket dimensions only accessible by Ways. Group members tend to be proficient in thaumaturgy and related occult practices, occasionally making use of paratech to do so, but are not significantly stronger than the majority of thaumaturges. Despite the inherent conflict between the Church's goals and the Foundation's veil protocols, the Church does not attempt to breach normalcy; rather, they operate under the veil, likely to avoid scrutiny from normalcy preservation groups.

The group mainly speaks a combination of native languages and the Ortothan Extraterrestrial Language (OEL), which has been anomalously preserved since an unknown point in time. While spoken OEL varies heavily or does not exist among certain species, the logograms used in written OEL are largely consistent across all Ortothan cultures, regardless of the amount of separation between them¹. According to the Church, this is the result of a divine act by the Koru-teusa to maintain the unification of all Ortothan cultures in the universe.

Human Ortothan belief systems are known to have existed by ~11000 BCE, corresponding to the formation of the ancient Ortothan Kingdom civilization, though modern branches have only been developed in the past century. Ortothan groups separate from the Church exist, all being significantly smaller in comparison and tending to have differing moral beliefs.

The Church of the Second Hytoth is an organization founded in 1900 after several occultists in the Society of the Second Hytoth, a minor group of interest, encountered the "Second Messenger," an extraterrestrial entity from an unknown Ortothan civilization. In part from the religious fervor brought on by the encounter, the Society reformed itself into the Church of the Second Hytoth, and its members began widespread efforts to integrate other Ortothan sects and proselytize outsiders. Such efforts lead to Foundation intervention on multiple occasions. By 1952 the organization held its first Cosmic Life Ceremony, a bloodletting ritual performed by Church members from a number of countries.

In 2000 the Church became less prominent, caused by demoralization when the Holy Sixth ("Yorun-leusan") of the Koru-teusa was said to have been killed in a significant Voruteut invasion. However, as of the 2010s the group has become increasingly active, with the aims of aiding Rakmou-leusan as much as possible.

Although the Church focuses primarily on the worship of Rakmou-leusan and the other Koru-teusa, smaller sects with differing beliefs and practices exist within it. These sects often involve aiding the group's goals via the worship of additional deities in the Ortothan pantheon or ones beyond it, believing that all gods must unite in protecting the universe from the Voruteut. More rarely are sects that follow different moral practices while still adhering to the central tenets of the group, which are accepted but are often viewed with disdain.

Ortothan groups not aligning with the Church of the Second Hytoth's tenets are, in most cases, ignored and excluded. In situations where an Ortothan group is acting in ways the Church views as bringing negative attention to the religion and is in conflict with their morals, an example being ritualistic murder to supply Rakmou-leusan with blood, warriors will be sent to stop the group's actions.

Many Church facilities have been identified, the largest being in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and Jena, Thuringia, Germany. While undercover Foundation operatives have broken into the Toronto and Jena Ortothan Churches during Operation VIOLET LENSE, the location of these churches within pocket dimensions only accessible through secretive Ways has prevented further success in investigations.

A number of extraterrestrial entities are known to be members of the Church. Although the organization is predominately human, Ortothan entities originating from other regions of the Milky Way Galaxy, the Second Messenger included, have integrated themselves into the group and follow their practices. Common origins of the entities are the evacuation of their home star systems and attempts at interstellar proselytization. It is of note that, despite these connections to extrasolar life, the Church itself lacks any contact with alien Ortothan groups. Whether extrasolar Ortothans are even aware of the existence of the Church of the Second Hytoth or not is a matter of continued research.

X-ray emissions from Terzan 2, which appear to be a common form of light-speed communication by the Coalition.

The Terzan 2 Ortothan Coalition is a collection of extraterrestrial civilizations and entities residing within Globular Cluster Terzan 2³, a star cluster orbiting the Milky Way Galaxy ~28,000 light-years from Earth, within the galactic core. Note that this name for the Coalition is not used by the group. It is unknown what name they have, if one exists.

The Coalition is a loose militaristic alliance of Ortothan groups, likely formed as a response to Twelve Stars, another civilization that resides in the region. Territorial expansion efforts by Twelve Stars caused multiple interstellar conflicts that heavily employed anomalous weaponry, the last of these having ended in the early 2000s. A complete disappearance of Twelve Stars territory, namely the star systems under their control, from Terzan 2 occurred in the 2030s, which has prevented both Ortothans and the Foundation possessing further information on their whereabouts. The current war began at some point between 2035 and 2037, all attacks being performed through the transit of vehicles and weaponry out of wormholes leading to an unknown area of space.

As both sides are relegated to the star cluster, this is not expected to bring any harm to the Solar System, though Twelve Stars attacks in other regions of the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy have been reported. The full motives of Twelve Stars are unknown, current aims seeming to involve the complete eradication of Ortothan culture in the star cluster.

Extraterrestrial communities residing within Terzan 2 have been known to the Foundation since initial investigations into alien life under the Pytheas Initiative. Continued observation from Earth found that Terzan 2 is one of the most active regions of the galaxy in terms of the amount of extraterrestrial transmissions. With recent advancements in Foundation faster-than-light technology and pocket dimension/Way-based communication systems, multiple exploratory probes have been sent to the cluster, the first arriving in 2046. Despite these efforts little information on the Coalition is available, in part from communication issues, difficulties in superluminal travel, and the present war.

Second Hytoth

When the Nameless Creator conjured our universe into being 13.8 billion years ago it was an empty place. When the Koru-teusa and the other survivors of the First Hytoth arrived there was little but clouds of hot gas, dark matter, and entities that can barely be considered life. Since then it has flourished into the world we know it to be today.

A common misconception is that the Second Hytoth is connected to other universes by means of Ways. This is not accurate. Ways do lead to other realms, called "Ontoths" in Ortothan though better known as pocket dimensions or branch universes, which can appear to be Hytoths wholly separate from ours but are all within the folds of the Second Hytoth. Our universe is the top layer of the Second Hytoth, and all other pocket dimensions branch out from it in fractals of worlds.

The importance of this is that if our universe falls one cannot escape by Way to survive. If we fail, all dimensions will fall as well. It is up to us to defend the beauty of all that is the Second Hytoth.

Terrestrial

Earth is not special. Our home is one of endless habitable planets in the universe, one of the ones with sapient lifeforms, one of the many ones where gods trod its grounds. It is unknown why the First Messenger chose to deliver its truths to early humanity, but that decision has left its marks on the surface of our world.

Extraterrestrial

The Koru-teusa gathered the first Ortothans in long-gone star systems far from here, and through the rest of the cosmos our brethren lie. Although our numbers have dwindled with the loss of our gods, the Ortothan fortitude pushes on in lands far stranger than our own.

The Eitoth — The Ortothan afterlife. Upon their death all Ortothans will have their spirits dragged through space, eventually colliding with the Eitoth and merging with the endless souls inside it. All that is known about the insides is that it is bliss. Kornoct the watcher and Noc-ver the defender protect the Eitoth from any threats, formerly being assisted by Yorun-leusan until their death defending it from Voruteut in the year 2000.

Uu-Azra — The galaxy-sized corpse of an entity killed by the Koru-teusa near the beginning of the universe. Since its death countless civilizations have entered the hollowed out portions of its interior and have flourished, many choosing to mine the hardened organic compounds within. A few gateways to the location are present on Earth.

The Voriek — The tear in existence leading into the Voru, created when the survivors of the First Hytoth drilled into the newly formed Second Hytoth. For parsecs around the hole reality is unstable, rendering it a lifeless wasteland to all but the most powerful entities. Rakmou-leusan remains on guard there, ensuring the Voruteut do not enter.

Opened Star Cluster — A star cluster near the center of Drifted Galaxy⁴ with a lively Ortothan population. All we know of them are the X-rays they send out through space, and it is certain they know nothing of us. We can only hope that one day we will make contact.

Ontoths

Past Ortothans commonly built their churches on the surface of Earth. However, as the Ortothan community became increasingly worried about organizations such as the Foundation and Global Occult Coalition, the Church decided to shift their largest temples off of the planet and into the stablest Ontoths they could create a Way to. In the present day most of our churches now reside in the Ontoths brave explorers found.

The Jena Ortothan Church — The main temple of the Church of the Second Hytoth. It is resided over by the standing Koru Archpriest, currently Koru Archpriest Farah Onteus. The temple is mainly accessible from Ways in the city of Jena, where it is built in an apparently endless expanse resembling the landscape of Jena, although with a purple sky and an endless autumn. The Grand Aímact Priests convene here for the Grand Aímact Council, held on a bimonthly basis.

The Toronto Ortothan Church — One of the largest Ortothan churches currently active. Like the Jena Ortothan Church it exists in a pocket dimension accessible by Ways present in Toronto. The entirety of the dimension is composed of stone, with the Church dug into it through numerous passageways and chambers. Grand Aímact Priest Sean Glen-Marcas is the current head of the Church, granted the rank of Grand Aímact Priest in 2015.

Voru

Outside the universe is the Voru, a chaotic realm that barely can be considered as existing. If the Second Hytoth is considered an island, the Voru is the tumultuous sea surrounding it, a sea in which we are wholly alone.

No order governs it. Creatures, minds, and things defying our understanding pop in and out of being, sometimes lasting long enough to give the illusion of structure. Persons from the universe who enter the Voru have higher chances of survival, as reality grants their forms a degree of stability, but are destined for destruction if they spend too long. Worse, they could become a Voruteut.

It is known that the Voreik is the largest of the tears leading to the Voru, though other entrances exist. Occasionally a hole can be opened, either by pure chance from fluctuations in reality or from deliberate attempts to create one. Tales exist of Ontoth travelers moving through so many worlds and branching so far down reality that they fall out of it entirely. How true these stories are is unknown.

The only certainty regarding information on the Voru is that what lies out there cannot be allowed in.

Expect all the descriptions to be relatively short (and not clinical — for the actual hub these are being written from the perspective of the Church (footnotes on what some of the deities are based in will be excluded)).

Uu — [Dead] — A beast that arose from ripples in reality, which transformed early settlers of the Second Hytoth into a mass of flesh that expanded and incorporated an entire galaxy. Killed by the Koru-teusa in one of their firsts acts in the newborn universe, with its corpse eventually hollowed and colonized by countless alien civilizations.⁶

The One of Dark and the One of Light⁷ — [Alive] — Two primordial beings that embody light and darkness itself. They are said to have been the first beings to be created by the Nameless Creator in the First Hytoth, and survived the universe's destruction.

Their lives are often short, either reduced to nothing by the chaos, killed by other Voruteut, or experiencing worse fates. Those that enter the universe either destabilize reality from their own being or try to consume it to become more stable. Rakmou-leusan is all that stands between their swarms and us.
