Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3474 is to be stored in a 40 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm display cabinet made of hardened steel and which's display case is made of bulletproof glass.
Above SCP-3474's stand should be located a standard portable remote surveillance camera, capable of transmitting audio and monitoring the contents of outputted piece of paper. The display cabinet should have a compartment for thirty (30) pieces of standard A4 size paper.
SCP-3474 should be accessed via removing the glass casing after unlocking it with an access key and confirming Level 2 authorisation with a biometric key card scanner.
For purposes of testing, the cabinet containing SCP-3474 should be moved into the desired place. SCP-3474 should only be accessed for removal and replacement of the piece of paper as well as maintenance.
Description: SCP-3474 has been found in the basement of a successful funeral home, located in ██████, ████████. It was found by police, who were investigating a sudden death of the owner under mysterious circumstances and contacted local Foundation agents. Upon retrieval of SCP-3474 there was an almost empty piece of paper inside of it, with only one line of text:
██/██/████ ██:██:██ [DATA EXPUNGED]1 has been [DATA EXPUNGED] to death.
SCP-3474 is a ████████ brand black typewriter. It uses standard for typewriter QWERTY layout with additional "Shift Lock" key above the Shift key, not present on models from that manufacturer. It lacks mounts for an ink ribbon and does not require one to type.
When not in anomalous state, SCP-3474 functions like a normal typewriter. It's typebar does not require ink ribbon to type. The source of ink has not yet been determined.
SCP-3474 enters it's anomalous phase when an appropriate typing medium is inserted and a human subject dies within 10 km radius around the device. At that moment the device will start typing by itself, writing an exact date, solar time2, name and reason of death of the subject.
The Shift Lock key, aside from functioning like an equivalent of Caps Lock on modern computer keyboards, switches the device between "Direct" and "Indirect" mode. The direct mode reports the direct cause of death and the indirect mode reports the indirect cause of death, the former being toggled when the button is pressed down and former being default "unpressed" state.
For example, if a person named John Smith dies by drowning or being shot:
Indirect mode:
day/month/year hour:minute:second John Smith has drowned to death.
day/month/year hour:minute:second John Smith has been shot to death.
Direct mode:
day/month/year hour:minute:second JOHN SMITH HAS ASPHYXIATED TO DEATH.
day/month/year hour:minute:second JOHN SMITH HAS BLED TO DEATH.
The discovery of the mode function was accidental, when Dr. █████ left the Shift Lock key pressed.
