Item #: SCP-5XXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5XXX may be stored in its off state in a well ventilated and temperature controlled standard security containment unit.1 All retrieved instances of SCP-5XXX are to be stored individually at a distance of at least 10 meters from each other instance. Instances are to be stored horizontally, in their ‘off’ state in a locked containment unit measuring no greater than 52 cm x 12 cm x 52 sm. Instances of SCP-5XXX are not to be withdrawn from storage without written approval by an O5 member.

Description: Object is a series of common household cooling fans of unknown number and origin. Fans are of box shape configuration and all instances are white and silver in color, measuring 50 cm x 50 cm x 10 cm, not including handle or cord. These objects weigh approximately 2 kg and are apparently composed of a combination of metal and plastic, although close analysis of samples has revealed that [DATA EXPUNGED]. Internal fan blade is 4-pronged; the object bears the legend “Gala” on its front grate. It is currently unknown whether this marking is related to an actual extant or discontinued manufacturer or merely a visual ornamentation inherent to the design.

The first known instance of the object was brought to Foundation attention due to a series of ██ deaths by hypoxia in a Seoul hotel room. Secure facility testing revealed the following.

Subjects entering containment immediately began to complain of abnormally warm temperatures in the testing environment, and report feeling an irresistible compulsion to switch the object on. Subjects prevented from interacting with the object by means of restraint report the testing environment increasing steadily in temperature. Independant instrument readings disagree with subject reports, uniformly revealing a steady temperature environment consistent with facility climate controls.

Despite this, the subject’s internal autonomic responses are consistent with their perceived environment temperature, causing the subject to sweat profusely, dehydrate and experience elevated heart rate. After approximately █ hours of exposure to the object in its resting state, subjects begin to experience the symptoms of severe hyperthermia including nausea and vomiting, fever, cramps, fatigue and confusion. Subjects will eventually lose consciousness and begin to █████████ and cease life function. Subsequent autopsy of the expired subject revealed the details of the death aside from [DATA EXPUNGED] were consistent with mundane death by hyperthermia.

If not prevented from interacting with the object, subjects report that turning the object on has successfully provided relief from the perceived heat. After approximately thirty minutes of exposure to the object in its ‘on’ state, subjects begin to report shortness of breath. At one hour subjects exhibit lethargy and delayed response to stimuli. Subjects after this time begin to report dizziness and a desire to sleep. Subjects who attempt to remain conscious report doing so increasingly difficult approaching the ████ hour mark. At approximately three hours of exposure all subjects succumb to unconsciousness. If continually exposed to the object after this point the subject begins to exhibit symptoms consistent with acute hypoxia, including slowed heart rate, changes to pallor, and reduced blood oxygen levels. As above, subjects will eventually expire due to lack of oxygen. In no case have instrument readings during testing measured a drop in oxygen level or any other change in gaseous content of the testing environment.
