The box is, at first glace, a black box. no bigger then an Altoids tin. It is black with no visible seams. Its weight would give the box the feeling of metal, however the exact composition is indeterminable. It is made of iron, however only about 20% is iron while the rest is a slew of 30+ elements, 5 or which are unknown to science at this time, the only close known equivalents to the 5 unknown are 5 of of the highest atomic weight elements (metals) we know of today. This means that the small box is uncharacteristically heavy for its size. There are many different circular openings in the box. 9 on top and 4 on each side with only one on the bottom. The holes are identical, and while being "holes" they terminate less then 3mm's into the box.
The box was found in a safe deposit box in the VIP area of a bank in -- The box was again in an area reserved for people of either high monetary worth or sometimes government personnel (foreign and domestic.) The owner of this box, as well as all other boxes in the area is undisclosed and known only by the individual owners. A private Block Chain is used to make payments and record ownership, all using hexadecimal numbers and no written names.
The SCP was alerted to the exzistance of this particular box only by the owner who has never made contact before and divulged no personal details. A simple typed letter printed using the most widely available printer in the word, put in the most widely used envelop, and stamped with a Forever stamp from the current year.
The letter its self was writin in English, With the lest information the sender could possibly give. (location of box, 256 hex key to open the box, and times of day you are allowed to visit the box) When describing the contents of the safe deposit box the sender simply said (we have no use for it anymore.)
The SCP decided to retrieve the item because of its location -- a highly populated city that has seen in increase in anomalous activity in recent months. not knowing anything about it in the slightest just that the original owner "has no use for it anymore." the SCP originally ignored the letter. However given the simplicity of retrieval it was decided to see what was there. Also it was verified that this section of safe deposit boxes was in fact reserved for society VIPs and heads of government.
They sent a single agent with the code on a flash drive that was to be inserted to unlock the box. Everthing went fine, the agent equipped with normal SCP hazard detection equipment found no emediate danger.
The small box was brought back to SCP labs to determine its nature. Apon arival it was clear that this is some kind of computer, judging by the abundance of ports. However the ports are non the SCP or any computer nerds had ever seen. They did'nt know how to power it or if they even could.
The bottom port gave them hope, slightly different from the other ports this one had gold exposed pins. They speculated this port must be power (if not they were out of ideas, maybe it was already powered on, however it remained at ambient temperature and showed no signs of being active.
some scientists wanted to take the box apart to gain insight that way, however using diamond tools on a small corner of the box showed that it would take 50+ times the convential wear of diamond tools compaired to conventinal hard metals (carbide, inkanel, etc) so cutting the box open was reserved for last ditch attempts.
At the 3 month mark the object was given the object class "safe" for they could not figure out how it worked with multiple scientists and PHDs working on it. they were unable to get any response after 3 months and no anomaly's were detected or observed.
The bottom port with its exposed gold "contacts" was deemed the power connector. However repeated attempts to power it all failed with no temperature difference or physical change in the box observed. many different voltages and currents were used to power it (in a wide range from .01 amps all the way to 200 amps) non yielded any change in the boxes temperature or physical characteristics.
Then it happened, all previous tests were preformed on the box with the object flipped over on a table. Then one scientist, relising if they ever figured out how to power the device, it would block some of the ports if it is sitting on a table. no matter what side was on the table some ports would be blocked.
Becuase the SCP was about to cut the box open to figure it out that way. He or she decided to throw a Hail Mary and hang the box from the ceiling. This actully seemed like a good idea to others becasue all the ports had retention surfaces, as the possible "cables" someone pluged into it would lock in and not fall out. This was ignored initaly because they couldn't figure out how to power the thing, let alone plug things into it. again the nature of the side and top ports was completely indeterminable with no current detected by probing or scanning for EMF's
So they constructed a power cable that would be capable of a wide range of current outputs, but also let them hang the device, by the bottom power port, from the celing, immediately this seemed like a good idea, now all ports were usable with most of them pointing strait down for easy acuss.
It took many days to re test the wide range of currents speculated to be possible power mechanisms. On the 5th day they were getting to the same point they were at before, nothing was working to get any EMF or tempture change from the device, let alone physical change.
You might be wondering why they even spent this much time on an object that is possibly just a block of metal? well if you work for the SCP this project is concederd to be a nice safe test, of an object previously held by other highly intelegent people "a puzzle" it is called by some working on it, a nice simple puzzle compared with other SCP's. also the metallurgy is unlike anything commercially available or even ever seen before. seeming to be very dense with most elements having a very high atomic weight.
Back to the 5th day of hanging it from the ceiling, When aproching current loads in excess of 500 amps. exzacly -— amps. The device actully started emiting a strong EMF. not too strong but on par with a fully stocked modern 8 foot tall server rack. They had done it, They were unsure how because this current had been applied while the device was on the table and nothing happened.
as soon as the EMF started the objects temperature, disparaging anticipations, actually started to drop. it had started at ambient but was dropping at a consistent rate of 10% decrease per hour completely linearly.
When first detecting the EMF the agency scientists wanted to leave the device powered in order to see if it would start doing anything anomalous on its own. It did not, its temperature continued to fall at a linier rate until aproching the 230 kelvin mark. At this point the object is encased in ice formed from the surround air. The rate of cooling stared to stretch dropping only 3% per hour.
They let the object chill itself untill it reached a fridged 100 Kelvin. at this point the scinetists are thrilled and power off the device to reconfigure the test area. Removing all water from the air to prevent condensation ice. The new test chamber is also negatively pressurized to help the devices tempture fall (at this point they are speculating it is a quantum computer)
They again power on the device with the discovered — volts to attain -—- amps of current. This time the device drops again at 10% decrease in tempture per hour. Except now without the ice forming the device continues to drop at 10% per hour past the 230 K mark. It shows no signs of slowing down now that the ice problem is averted. they have no idea what is it going to do next. At the incredably low 50K at this point Light is emited from all the ports in the device. Not a lot but a detectable amount.
It has been solved, the extra ports are actually fiber optic connections. the lights are being modulated and are all sending binary. Always speculated but never confirmed. The test is stopped with emediate intention to interface with the fiber optic ports.
Again the reader might ask why so much attention to an object of human origin. It is again a question of "you wanna study SCP-1499 or this one" and in the grand scheme of things this SCP is relatively low cost to poke at, showing no signs of being harmful. and requiring only electricity to activate.
So they quicly enginer fiber optic cables to use the never befor seen ports. The concept of fiber optics is very simple, just turn light pulses into binary and then into whatever you need them to be (data, text, video.) They plug in a fiber cable to one of the ports. the other end into a fiber optic HUB in the room. with another cable on the HUB running out the room into a computer lab. They power on the device and let it get it its desired tempture of 50 K At this point they confirm that the HUB is transmitting binary to the computer lab cable. (not only is the cable from the SCP transmitting data, but it also is transmittable by the HUB.) Leading them to more strongly believe this item is of human origin.
The object actully continues to drop in tempture to a wopping 10 k. at this point something anomolus starts happings. the cable leading to the hub melts. ending the tests. the cables inner core has completly melted and burnt a hole in the floor. This is odd, how can a device that is so cold be in contact with a cable and make that cable melt?
it is speculated that that cable is being used by the device to exhaust the heat that is being taken out of it. The scientists simply add a large heat sync to the cable on the outside of the test chamber. that works and they are able to approach 10 k again without melting the output cable.
This is where things get anomolus. At 5 k the tempture remains constant. This is of couse extremly fastinating as this device is taking only - amps and this amount of energy transfur should require much more input energy. The SCP also seems to be extremly good at "sipping" more energy to keep its self cold instead of just being full throttle all the time. This must be a property of the case material they think. it must have superior insulation property's at low temperatures.
They let it sit. seeing if it wants to drop any more, it dosent, it stays at 5 k. A extrodanary feat of scinece they think. also at 5 k the binary output begins to increase in density from - bit per ms to 10 times that when at 5 k. They look at the binary and try converting it into text (hey we might get lucky) at first it comes out as jibrish. then after many hours of speculation they reliese that it may be incrypted. So one of them decided to retrive the original 256 bit hex that the objects safe deposit box was found in. They take the code and compare outputs using to to that witch is being output by the SCP object to find that yes, the safe deposit box code in fact deciphers the date to be readable as text output.
Further, the binary being transmitted, after being unscrambled, actually creates a output very similar to MSDOS. or some text based operating system. Except all identifying words are using characters that are not available out of the agency's entire character database. This immediately frustrates the scientists. they have came this far to figure out the characters used by what ever is on this box are none that are available for their use. But more frustrating some of them are. which means someone is just messing with them and could have provided the missing characters.
but there are still some scientists who do not want to go work on the Keter SCPs and make the argument that there may be a way to fill in the missing characters. After months of research however there is no way and all the important words are still un-seeable empty space. So they decide to guess what the missing characters are and move on. They speculate that can input binary to the device via one of the other ports. They connect another cable and begin inputing
