Dark Sphere
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures:
The very nature, properties and the location of SCP-XXXX allow for relatively easy containment procedures. The site where it was initially discovered is 2546 meters underground, and the only access point is located at the Puy De Sancy, Auvergne, (Massif central) France (GPS 45.5284° N, 2.8139° E). It has been designated, ‘Provisional Containment Area-17’.
Special Security Officers have been placed to prevent and secure any further access on 24 hour rotating shifts. Level 3 security clearance or above must be held. NO ONE Repeat, NO ONE, no matter their security clearance shall be allowed access to the research station where SCP-XXXX is located (except when search and extraction procedures are necessary). Elevators down to the research station have been disabled. A passcode to reactivate the elevator has been given to three special security officers.
A small monitoring facility has been set up in Chambon-Sur-Lac where three Class C personnel shall track any significant spikes in SCP-XXXX’s growth rate. Anything above 0.001 over a period of 24 hours shall require immediate search and extraction procedures.
The land and any rights concerning such have been acquired from Prometheus Labs, further preventing any accidental discovery of SCP-XXXX. A super injunction has been implemented upon the three remaining scientists/employees that have knowledge of SCP-XXXX and its location. The three subject’s activities are currently being closely monitored.
Description:
SCP-XXXX is a spherical anomaly varying in size, dependent upon how many people are within a radius of 1.24 kilometres. According to the data logs and personal diaries of the five scientists assigned to research the anomaly (SCP-XXXX) by Prometheus Labs it contains no mass and exists as a pure vacuum. Dr Jesper Bystrӧm described it as a black sphere that doesn’t reflect light nor absorb it but is somehow visible.
N.B. the sphere is mathematically perfect in its dimensions.
It seems to respond to life forms within the above stated radius, but in what manner other than its growth in size is as yet unknown. Its growth rate via the presence of life is negligible but seems to collate with the size of the life form. A human presence would facilitate a larger growth rate than that of an insect. SCP-XXXX’s growth rate rises exponentially when it is observed directly by a sentient human being (it's effects on sapient animals are currently unknown). Staring at the sphere for extended periods of time results in feelings of tranquillity, contentment and peace of mind. However, it has highly addictive qualities, the observer suffers from withdrawal symptoms; uncontrollable shivering, nausea, insomnia and has resulted in violent psychotic episodes. It has been theorised that the sphere feeds on those who observe it and its addictive qualities are a survival and growth mechanism.
As the sphere grows it absorbs anything in its path, on several occasions the research station and the chamber containing the sphere had to be expanded. Dr Pierre Laplace, the station’s in-house medical doctor lost both his forefinger and index finger when he ill-advisedly pushed them through the sphere’s shimmering boundary.
On discovering the Prometheus Labs project and its research into the sphere, a D-Class agent was sent in to infiltrate the station and shut it down from within. Other more diplomatic means were not viable given the highly unstable and paranoid nature of Prometheus Labs’s project manager, Flip Kindred Dowland. He proved severely reticent to co-operate in the numerous approaches the Foundation made.
The scientists employed by Prometheus Labs were all highly respected and well qualified in their respective fields so no scientific testing or confirmation of the data logs, theories and diaries has been necessary or possible due to the special containment procedures stated above and the existential threat the sphere poses.
