Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe (Euclid pending)
Special Containment Procedures:
MTF-Gamma 5 (“Red Herrings”) is to locate and censor any information regarding SCP-XXXX prior to its’ discovery and containment. Foundation agents embedded within marine biology and geological organizations are to monitor for the discovery of SCP-XXXX and immediately contact MTF-Gamma 5 in the event of the discovery of an SCP-XXXX-A instance.
SCP-XXXX and the surrounding area has been registered as a Category Ia nature reserve with the government of Algeria and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature to deter civilians from trespassing into the containment site. Foundation security teams are to patrol the borders of SCP-XXXX under the guise of park rangers stationed in the area to prevent the poaching of endangered non-anomalous species. Any non-Foundation associated individuals found within or leaving the boundaries of SCP-XXXX are to be immediately detained and searched for any compromising physical or digital material. Once all compromising material has been confiscated, the detainee is to be administered Class-B amnestics and implanted with false memories that induce the belief that SCP-XXXX is a strict nature reserve protecting non-anomalous native plant and animal species from human impact.
In the event that an SCP-XXXX-A instance does leave the containment area, it is to be tracked via the use of modified seismometers. The SCP-XXXX-A instance is to be captured and held in an appropriate containment chamber and transported back to Site-XXXX and released.
A small population of assorted SCP-XXXX-A instances is to be maintained in Site-XXXX for testing purposes. Any site personnel requesting access to an SCP-XXXX-A instance for testing and research purposes is to fill out and submit the appropriate paperwork (see Document XXXX.17) to Site Director Fowl for review.
Site personnel attempting to capture a wild SCP-XXXX-A instance are required to wear appropriate protective gear pertaining to the handling of small, large, and/or venomous marine organisms.
Description:
SCP-XXXX is an approximately 250 x 250 km area located in the Saharan Desert near the Aïr Mountains. The area itself is mostly non-anomalous with regards to its geographical characteristic. The main anomalous characteristic feature of SCP-XXXX is that it serves as the main habitat to a collection of anomalous organisms which will be henceforth be referred to as SCP-XXXX-A.
SCP-XXXX-A instances are physically and anatomically identical to nonanomalous marine flora and fauna with habitat ranges in the Arctic Ocean. The abnormality that distinguishes an SCP-XXXX-A from its' non-anomalous counterpart is its' ability to reside, traverse, and respirate and/or photosynthesize in sedimentary and metamorphic rock as opposed to saltwater. Unless they have been forcefully transported outside of SCP-XXXX, an SCP-XXXX-A instance has not yet been documented to migrate outside the boundaries of SCP-XXXX.
SCP-XXXX and its' biological community of SCP-XXXX-A instances were discovered by the Foundation when the carcass of an SCP-XXXX-A instance - which will henceforth be referred to SCP-XXXX-A-1 -that outwardly resembled a Somniosus microcephalus (Greenland Shark) was recovered, floating on the surface of the water, by a civilian fisherman in the Bay of Algiers on April 25, 2019. In an interview with Foundation personnel, the fisherman claimed that he saw SCP-XXXX-A-1 fling itself into the bay from a container on a cargo ship. After locating and questioning the crew of the cargo ship, Foundation personnel traced the mineral imports on the cargo ship back to [REDACTED] in the Aïr Mountains.
A microscopic examination of the area's sand discovered phytoplankton and zooplankton identical organisms inhabiting the sand sheet of SCP-XXXX, proving the existence of SCP-XXXX-A microorganisms and flora in SCP-XXXX. Seismographic readings of SCP-XXXX conducted by Foundation personnel indicated that there was a large population of macro-organisms living beneath the sand sheet. A successful attempt to capture and contain an anomalous macro-organism inhabiting SCP-XXXX-A proved the existence of SCP-XXXX-A macro-fauna in SCP-XXXX such as SCP-XXXX-A-1. (see Addendum.XXXX.2).
Addendum.XXXX.1: Documented species of SCP-XXXX-A
| Instance # | Species | Date of Discovery | Observations |
| SCP-XXXX-A-1 | Somniosus microcephalus (Greenland Shark) | 4/25/19 | The external and internal biology of the instance recovered from the Bay of Algiers was almost identical to the biology of the non-anomalous Greenland Shark. The only two abnormalities were small amounts of sedimentary rock were found in the digestive tract and the arteries were filled with various minerals with slight red colouration as opposed to blood plasma. An autopsy of the carcass indicates that the SCP-XXXX-A-1 instance died from suffocation. As of present day, no further SCP-XXXX-A-1 instances have been documented. |
| SCP-XXXX-A-2 | Phytoplankton | 4/28/19 | Examination of SCP-XXXX-A-2 instances has verified that there are no distinct anatomical abnormalities that would distinguish SCP-XXXX-A-2 from the anatomy of its' nonanomalous counterparts. However, SCP-XXXX-A-2 instances - in contrast to nonanomalous phytoplankton - does not contain any form of water within the cell. Molecules of various different minerals were observed in comparatively large quantities to the amount that would typically be observed in nonanomalous phytoplankton. Analysis of SCP-XXXX-A-2 under an electron microscope indicates that the lack of water does not affect the production of oxygen molecules and glucose molecules during photosynthesis. |
| SCP-XXXX-A-3 | Zooplankton | 4/28/19 | Initial examination revealed no discernable differences between SCP-XXXX-A-3 and its' nonanomalous equivalent besides the total lack of water in SCP-XXXX-A-3. Analysis under an electron microscope seems to indicate that SCP-XXXX-A-3 instances release molecules of various different minerals as a byproduct as of cellular respiration in place of water molecules. |
| SCP-XXXX-A-4 | Melanogrammus aeglefinus (Haddock) | 5/2/19 | SCP-XXXX-A-4 has no outward, physical characteristics that clearly distinguish it from its nonanomalous duplicate. Upon termination and dissection of an SCP-XXXX-A-4 instance, no internal abnormalities were found besides notable amounts of sedimentary rock discovered in the gills and stomach, a total lack of liquid water, and various minerals/sedimentary rocks in the arteries as opposed to blood plasma. |
| SCP-XXXX-A-5 | Arctogadus glacialis (Arctic Cod) | 5/3/19 | The SCP-XXXX-A-5 instance examined had no noticeable abnormalities when compared to its' nonanomalous counterpart with the exception of sedimentary rock and (total lack of) water residing in its internal structures. The SCP-XXXX-A-5 in question was female and carrying an egg sac. The eggs were removed and kept in refrigerated storage for future testing, similar procedures should be carried out in the future for terminated female SCP-XXXX-A instances. The time of the discovery of egg sacs in a female SCP-XXXX-A-5 which suggests that SCP-XXXX-A-5 may undergo a spawning migration from an unknown location to SCP-XXXX1. |
| SCP-XXXX-A-6 | Cyanea capillata (Lion's Mane Jellyfish) | 5/5/19 | The body of the SCP-XXXX-A-6 instance captured and terminated by site research personnel consisted of approximately 95% minerals. There was no liquid water found in the subject. The remainder of the subject's external and internal biology were consistent with the anatomy of the nonanomalous Lion's Mane Jellyfish species. |
| SCP-XXXX-A-7 | Pandalus borealis (Northern Prawn) | 5/7/19 | The instances captured had no observable biological differences from the nonanomalous with the exception being abnormally large quantities of various sedimentary rocks and minerals that were found within the internal structures and the total lack of liquid water in all examined SCP-XXXX-A-7 instances. |
Unless any new instances have any radical biological differences (compared to their nonanomalous counterparts) that don't amount to "sand instead of water", I see no need to clutter the main document with relatively irrelevant SCP-XXXX-A instances. As of now, newly discovered instances will be recorded in Document XXXX.32. - Site Director Tannan, 5/11/19
