Containment Class:
euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in the precise centre-point of a containment cell 30 m in both width and length and 20 m in height located within Site-88, Section D. The floor of the containment cell must be 20 m thick. These measurements are set to avoid any accidental proximity to SCP-XXXX by Foundation personnel.
A hazard warning line must be painted and maintained on the floor of SCP-XXXX's containment cell in the form of a circle 15 m in radius with SCP-XXXX once again at the centre-point. Space within the cell but outside the circle is to be designated the "safe zone" and space within the circle designated the "proximity zone".
Lower-level personnel may not enter the cell without prior Foundation approval, and any personnel who enter must be observed during their time within. The border of the proximity zone must be lined with motion sensors that sound an alarm when triggered. Due to events described in Incident Report XXXX-14, motion sensors lining the proximity zone hazard line have been disconnected from the alarm system and are now monitored by Foundation personnel tasked to SCP-XXXX. A security camera has been installed monitoring the cell's exterior for any changes or unauthorised entry by Foundation personnel.
The amount of cumulative time spent by any individual within SCP-XXXX's proximity zone is to be logged. Personnel must be psychologically evaluated after each entry within the proximity zone and any personnel that has logged 2 hours total within cannot be allowed to enter the proximity zone again.
Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 must each be contained in their own humanoid containment cell within Site-88. These cells should include a window for interviews and human interactions with each instance when required. The door to the cell must be a pressurised airlock. If entry to the cell becomes absolutely necessary for any reason, Foundation personnel involved must be protected under armed guard. In the event that SCP-XXXX-1 must be anaesthetised, an extremely high concentration of anaesthetic gas must be vented into their cell due to SCP-XXXX-1's naturally high tolerance towards all forms of anaesthesia.
Instances of SCP-XXXX-2 require identical minimum containment procedures as SCP-XXXX-1, but unlike SCP-XXXX-1 they are permitted to be contained in groups, albeit no larger than 4 individuals to avoid overcrowding. Interview windows are not required. In the event that the cell must be entered by Foundation personnel, SCP-XXXX-2 must be tranquilised using the same methods as for SCP-XXXX-1. If an instance of SCP-XXXX-2 is to be kept alive for an extended amount of time it must be permanently restrained to prevent the instance's expiration from exhaustion, and must also be force-fed the appropriate amount of calories and water as SCP-XXXX-2 will not consume willingly.
Description: SCP-XXXX appears to be a rusting cuboid analog metal safe of approximately 1 m3 in volume and 280 kg in weight. A 2 mm-deep indent the shape of a keyhole is present on the right-hand side of the SCP-XXXX's door, but is unusable.
SCP-XXXX appears to be of great age and made from some form of steel, but attempts to further examine the chemical makeup of both the metal and the rust have yielded no results. The metal and its apparent rust have proven impervious to all forms of damage inflicted, with no Foundation weaponry or equipment leaving any marks on the surface, rendering it impossible to open the safe by force or to take samples of the materials.
All attempts to learn what (if anything) is contained within SCP-XXXX have provided no insight. No noteworthy sounds or shifts in weight have been reported when moving or rotating SCP-XXXX, and no equipment has proven able to scan the interior from outside.
Human subjects that spend more than a total of 3 cumulative hours within 15 m of SCP-XXXX's apparent centre of mass begin to convert into instances of either SCP-XXXX-1 or SCP-XXXX-2. All tested non-human species appear unaffected. This effect is purely related to proximity to SCP-XXXX, with observation of the object from outside the proximity zone having no apparent cognitohazardous effect.
The first symptom of SCP-XXXX's anomalous effect takes the form of auditory hallucinations. These hallucinations vary in exact details, but all focus on SCP-XXXX's interior as the source. Examples of the most common hallucinations reported by victims of SCP-XXXX include:
- Rattling, "as if something is restlessly shaking around within the safe".
- Cries for help from within the safe by humans or animals known and important to the suffering individual in some way, alive or dead.
- An incessant scratching sound as if a being within is trying to scratch through the metal with claws or fingernails.
Once an individual has begun suffering these hallucinations, their infection by SCP-XXXX is irreversible and they will inevitably convert into an instance of either SCP-XXXX-1 or SCP-XXXX-2 between 3 and 72 hours after hallucinations begin.
The only truly anomalous property of SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 is their extreme resistance to all forms of anaesthesia and amnestics which, along with their highly unpredictable behaviour and innate knowledge of SCP-XXXX, means they must be contained by the Foundation.
Only extremely large doses of anaesthetic are able to tranquilise these instances, while even the strongest amnestics only work temporarily and instances appear to build up a resistance to them, with the time gap between use of amnestics and return of lost memories shortening with each use regardless of dosage. During the brief period of time during which applied amnestics affect these instances, they appear to revert completely to the non-anomalous state they were in before their first exposure to SCP-XXXX's proximity zone.
Instances of both SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 also have an innate, constantly-updating knowledge of SCP-XXXX's location and how to reach it if possible.
The differences between SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 are only apparent in their behaviour. Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are, at times, able to behave as if they were non-anomalous human beings. However, hidden under this facade is a deep-rooted obsession with SCP-XXXX and a near-constant drive to find an alleged key to open it and retrieve the contents. Instances have shown no interest in assorted keys presented to them by the Foundation.
The contents of SCP-XXXX is consistently referred to as "the Gift" by all instances of SCP-XXXX-1 as part of their innate knowledge of SCP-XXXX. When provided with the means to do so (i.e. a box of miscellaneous objects), instances are likely to obsessively search for the key to SCP-XXXX. The longer an episode of searching lasts, the more emotionally frustrated the instance will become. As this frustration increases, they may attempt to attack and dismember other living beings in order to search through their victims' remains for the key.
SCP-XXXX-1 refuses to provide any further elaboration on the exact nature of "the Gift" or the key they are searching for. Whether this is a refusal to cooperate with the Foundation or they simply do not know the answers themselves has yet to be determined.
SCP-XXXX-2 will obsessively and helplessly attempt to use blunt force to open SCP-XXXX or even claw through the metal with their fingernails, leading to great personal injuries on their hands and fingers that do not appear to deter them. While instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are able to resist their compulsion for long enough to perform behaviours essential to life and personal hygiene and to occasionally converse, instances of SCP-XXXX-2 are completely overtaken by their obsession with opening SCP-XXXX and are unable to speak coherently.
When unable to reach SCP-XXXX, instances will show signs of extreme distress and attempt to fight or claw its way through any obstacle between it and SCP-XXXX. SCP-XXXX-2 will continuously display these patterns of behaviour, unless physically prevented from doing so, until it expires due to exhaustion, dehydration or starvation.
Addendum: Head researcher assigned to SCP-XXXX, Dr Renée, hypothesises that SCP-XXXX's keyhole-shaped indent may open for access when the correct key is within the proximity zone. This hypothesis has been tested with several keys and key-like objects, showing no change in SCP-XXXX.
Foundation researchers have yet to reach consensus on the origin of SCP-XXXX due to lack of evidence. While the object does appear to be of great age due to its apparent rust, Dr Renée voiced doubt that it could be of significant age as it would have been discovered earlier due to its anomalous effect, and that the apparent indestructibility of the metal suggested that that the rust could be fake. However, Dr Renée also noted that SCP-XXXX could have once been an unremarkable man-made safe before acquiring anomalous properties through unknown means, meaning the object itself could be as old as it appears.
Studies have been conducted on the effect of SCP-XXXX by deliberate exposure of D-Class Personnel of varying ages, gender identities, ethnicities, personal backgrounds and psychological states to SCP-XXXX's proximity zone. These studies have shown no correlation between any of these factors and likelihood of turning into either SCP-XXXX-1 or SCP-XXXX-2, with the selection process appearing to be random. The amount of time taken for conversion into either of these SCPs also appears to be random.
It is important to note that the containment procedures relating to SCP-XXXX-2 are a temporary solution as, despite Foundation efforts to keep them restrained, hygienic, fed and hydrated, all contained instances expire roughly 7 months after conversion due to cardiac arrest likely related to sleep deprivation. Due to this eventuality, any studies on specific instances of SCP-XXXX-2 must be undertaken in as small a time frame as possible. Prolonged containment of SCP-XXXX-2 was found to have a negative impact on morale among the staff of Site-88, therefore it is recommended that all instances are terminated as a mercy-killing once any studies deemed necessary have been completed.
SCP-XXXX DISCOVERY LOG
DATE OF CONTAINMENT: 28/03/2017
Prior to Foundation discovery of SCP-XXXX, a series of 4 murders were reported between 05/03/2017 and 20/03/2017 in ██████, ███████ leaving victims in various states of dismemberment. Autopsy report judged that all these murders were committed by the same individual who was in an extremely frenzied state on each occasion. The first 3 bodies were found in secluded public areas, with the fourth victim being found dead in his home. The fourth victim's home was found in a state of disarray, with the contents of all cabinets, drawers, cupboards and boxes emptied onto the floor. Many possessions of high monetary value remained, suggesting that the event was either not a robbery or the killer simply did not find what they were looking for. Much forensic evidence is collected, but no match is found in the criminal database. Law enforcement patrols of known secluded locations in the local area are increased.
On 24/03/2017, a fifth murder was committed. The killer, a 21-year-old male, was this time caught in the process of corpse dismemberment by police officers. While reported to have been in the expected frenzied state while dismembering the body, the killer immediately calmed down and surrendered upon realising he had been caught, allowing himself to be taken alive. The killer is immediately arrested and placed in isolated custody.
The killer was found to have moved into a nearby suburban home with his parents less than a week prior to his first known murder. Police attempted to call the killer's parents to inform them of the situation, but received no reply. Police investigated the killer's place of residence in an attempt to find further evidence and clues to a possible motive. No response was heard upon the officers announcing themselves, causing them to use force to enter the property. The home appeared to be in a similar state of disarray to that of the fourth victim's. Some move-in boxes were still present, with their contents emptied out onto the floor. Officers present also reported a smell similar to that of rotting flesh as soon as they entered the home.
The police officers determined the basement to be the source of the smell. Upon entering, they found SCP-XXXX within, along with 2 human corpses - a man and a woman. The human corpses were in a considerable state of decay, accounting for the smell, and had been dismembered in similar fashion to the murder victims. Their fingertips appeared to have been worn down significantly.
Autopsy report concluded that these individuals were the killer's mother and father and had died due to cardiac arrest brought on by extreme exhaustion, with the dismemberment being done post-mortem. They had worn their fingers down attempting to claw their way through something, but nothing in the basement appeared to have been damaged by them. Their deaths had occurred at roughly the same time as their son had begun his series of murders. Attempts by law enforcement to investigate SCP-XXXX and its contents failed.
The unusual circumstances of the parents' deaths and the lack of results from attempts to study SCP-XXXX brought the object to the attention of the Foundation. Foundation field agents were dispatched to investigate, but were recalled while en-route once reports reached the Foundation that several police officers and forensic scientists that had spent time in SCP-XXXX's presence had begun displaying erratic, violent behaviour. Details regarding the drug-resistance and 2 distinct patterns of behaviour being displayed by these individuals (several of whom had been shot dead by police during violent outbursts) made the Foundation aware of SCP-XXXX's effect and allowed early classification reports on SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 to be drawn up. A new plan for SCP retrieval was formed and put into action.
On 27/03/2017, surviving instances of SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 were moved to Foundation custody at Site-88 due to its specialisation in containment and study of humanoid SCPs. These individuals were officially reported deceased soon after, with a cover story spread that they had been killed lawfully by guards during an escape attempt.
It was decided that, to allow for ease of studying both SCP-XXXX and its victims simultaneously, SCP-XXXX would also be contained at Site-88. As it appeared that only those who had spent the greatest amount of time in SCP-XXXX's presence had been affected by it, the object was declared safe to transport by truck provided that no individuals spent more than 90 minutes in its presence, leading to a great number of Foundation personnel being involved in transportation.
A total of 12 stop-off points were utilised en-route to allow transportation teams to be switched. All roads between pickup location and Site-88 were cleared at appropriate times to prevent journey time from being increased by traffic. This plan was successful, with SCP-XXXX arriving at Site-88 on-schedule on 28/03/2017.
Once SCP-XXXX was contained within Site-88, studies involving D-Class Personnel were immediately undertaken to determine the specifics of its anomalous effects. Anaesthetics and amnestics were also tested on instances of SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 in order to quantify their apparent resistance to such treatments.

INCIDENT REPORT
INCIDENT #: XXXX-14
DATE OF OCCURRENCE: 22/06/2017 (initial)
At approximately 1:02 AM, internal cameras recording SCP-XXXX's cell ceased function. At the same time, motion sensors along the hazard line around SCP-XXXX were all triggered simultaneously, activating Site-88's alarm system. Facility guards immediately mobilised to the cell. As guards begun to enter SCP-XXXX's cell, motion sensor activity ceased and internal cameras resumed functioning. SCP-XXXX and the interior of its cell appeared undisturbed by the incident. No abnormal behaviour was detected from instances of SCP-XXXX-1 or SCP-XXXX-2 during this incident. To ensure that this incident was not simply a technical malfunction, Dr Renée ordered the affected internal cameras and motion sensors to be replaced immediately - no further action was taken at this time.
Incident later repeated on 02/07/2017. Dr Renée ordered a guard to be stationed outside the cell at all times and for all affected equipment to be replaced once again. Incident repeated again on 06/07/2017. On this third occurrence, abnormal technical activity ceased within 5 seconds, ending as soon as the posted guard began to open the cell door. Guard reported no detectable sounds eminating from within the cell before, during or after the incident.
Incident repeated on several occasions in the following weeks, each occurrence being identical to the third. Dr Renée ordered a guard position to be taken up within the cell at all times for a period of 2 months. No further incidents reported during this time period. Dr Renée then returned the guard position to the cell's exterior, followed by another identical incident 9 days later.
Dr Renée concluded that, due to Incident XXXX-14 causing all observing cameras to cease function and never occurring or continuing once SCP-XXXX is under direct human observation, and due to the time gap between incidents otherwise showing no pattern, these occurrences were merely serving as a disruption to Foundation activities. As the incidents caused no apparent damage to Site-88 or danger to its staff, Dr Renée ordered the motion sensors lining the proximity zone to be disconnected from the facility alarm system and instead connected to an observation system so that repeated incidents could be monitored without further disruption at Site-88, in the hope of eventually learning more about SCP-XXXX.
Repetitions of Incident XXXX-14 have continued. Uninterrupted occurrences vary in duration before suddenly ceasing, with a mean time of 2 hours 43 minutes. No changes in the activity of said instances or observable patterns in their occurrence have yet been detected by assigned Foundation personnel

Procedure 6241-Kraatis: During an interview conducted by Dr Renée, an instance of SCP-XXXX-1 suggested that if the key to SCP-XXXX was not found, the proximity zone would eventually begin increasing in radius in order to increase the number of "searchers" to help find the key. This suggestion caused much debate among senior Foundation personnel as to how to respond, as instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are known to be manipulative and may attempt to cause fear in those who ask them about SCP-XXXX. After a hearing, Dr Renée's proposal, Procedure 6241-Kraatis, was approved and put into effect.
Procedure 6241-Kraatis must be enacted within SCP-XXXX's cell on a weekly basis to ensure that its proximity zone has not begun expanding. For convenience when enacting this procedure, a chair should be left in the safe zone roughly 0.5 m from the hazard line at its nearest point. This chair should be nailed to the floor to ensure that its proximity to SCP-XXXX does not change unless ordered by authorised Foundation personnel.
This procedure requires a single D-class individual (referred to in this file as D-XXXX) who has not previously been involved in Procedure 6241-Kraatis to be escorted inside SCP-XXXX's cell by at least 2 armed guards. D-XXXX will then be made to sit in the aforementioned chair and to report any sounds that they detect emanating from within SCP-XXXX. All individuals involved must remain outside of the known proximity zone. This process will be continued for 4 hours, after which D-XXXX will be kept in quarantine for a minimum of 72 hours and psychologically evaluated to ensure that they are not converting into an instance of SCP-XXXX-1 or SCP-XXXX-2.
If any D-class personnel are ever found to be affected by SCP-XXXX during Procedure 6241-Kraatis, SCP-XXXX must be very closely monitored and scheduled enactions of this procedure must be increased to a daily basis rather than weekly. In this event, SCP-XXXX must be reassessed for likely change of containment class and disruption class, and new containment measures must be decided on.
Thus far, no enactions of Procedure 6241-Kraatis have resulted in the detection of any proximity zone expansion. Dr Renée insists that the procedure is still necessary, as the SCP-XXXX-1 instance did not give a specific time frame for when expansion may begin. Other instances of SCP-XXXX-1 have refused to comment on this when questioned.
As previously mentioned, several senior Foundation personnel doubted the necessity of Procedure 6241-Kraatis due to lack of trust in the word of an SCP-XXXX-1 instance, believing it more likely that the individual was simply attempting to intimidate and cause panic among the Foundation. In order to prevent this possible ruse from causing panic, information regarding Procedure 6241-Kraatis and its purpose is only freely available to those of Level 3 Clearance or above. This information can only be granted to those of Clearance-Level 1 and 2 on a need-to-know basis. Amnestics appropriate for the individual's extent of knowledge and how long they possessed it must be applied once this need-to-know period has ended.
