Doctor Strass walked down the brightly lit hallway, passing other researchers carrying materials and tools for their next experiment, bustling through the dull concrete hallways. The fluorescent lights shining bright in Strass’ eyes. Strass walked up to an X junction in the building and stopped for a moment. Doctor Zelle walked up behind Strass and tapped him on the shoulder, startling him slightly.
“Hey Sam, how ya doing? Ready for another shift?”
Strass steadies himself.
“Ready as I’ll ever be. Just tired from my long shift last night.”
“I know, I heard about that breach, are you alright?”
“I’m just glad the glass butterflies breached and not the immortal lizard.”
“Well, if you’re alright let’s head over to our shift.”
“Let’s go.”
The two doctors took a left in the hallway and began walking again. The two arrived at a dimly lit checkpoint guarded by two faceless security officers wearing masks and carrying machine guns.
“Hello Private Tyson.” Doctor Zelle said politely.
“Good day ma’am. Headin’ in for work I see.”
The guard took a keycard from his pocket and pressed it against the door in front of them, a flashing red light appeared as the door opened and the two doctors passed through. Doctor Zelle and Doctor Strass passed through the checkpoint and Zelle turned around to face Strass.
“We have a new experiment planned for today did you hear about it?” She said excitedly.
“I did not, what’s happening today?”
“We’re going to give 6749 a memory update after we cleared it’s memory last time after it caused that double breach last week.”
“Ah, this won’t go wrong.”
“Don’t worry … we have people ready to pull it’s plug.”
“Well, alright let’s go.”
The two walked into a room with a wall covered in one sided glass. On the other side, there was a lonely desk with a computer on it. The screen was turned on to a page detailing an artificial intelligence that lived on the computer. A small cartoonish-looking character moved around on the screen. Zelle noticed the security camera in the corner behind the researchers turned on and faced them. 6749 waved at the researchers and Zelle put her face in her hand.
“Hey Strass, remind me to send a team in there to fix the cameras from 6749’s control.”
“Got it.” Strass said as he leaned over the desk in front of him, pulling out a sticky note and scribbling it down with his neat handwriting.
The observatory room was very dark, as the only light in the room was the dim orange lamp on the desk while all the light was in the containment chamber for 6749.
“Alright Amanda, bring in the test subject.” Strass said.
Doctor Zelle walked out of the room and around the corner where there was a young man in an orange jumpsuit ready to enter the chamber.
Strass leaned over the desk to the microphone and pressed the red button.
“D-6632-2. You are about to enter 6749’s chamber and insert the memory chip. You are to not tamper with 6749 under any circumstances and if you do mess with it you will be executed. Please enter the chamber.”
The door in front of D-6632-2 opened with a hum of the electric door. The subject walked in the room and the door slammed shut behind him. D-6632-2 approached the computer and the character on the screen immediately took notice, sliding across the screen and waving happily at the stranger. The man in the jumpsuit inserted a small, yellow disk into the open console on the side of the screen. 6749’s eyes turned to static as the chip was inserted into the console. The cartoonish character suddenly grew in size, taking up a larger portion of the screen. The featureless face stared at the doctors in a daze while processing the information.
“Well it’s handling it quite well eh?” a doctor in the room said.
“Let’s not jump to any conclusions just yet.” Strass said.
The computer suddenly moved on the table, jolting to the left slightly.
“Should we worry about that?” a doctor said.
“Get the D out of there!” Zelle said, worried.
Private Tyson entered the chamber and grabbed D-6632-2’s arm and pulled him back to the door. Two technicians in grey jumpsuits and yellow safety tape entered the room to deescalate the situation. The screen turned to static and the computer violently jolted on the desk, throwing it off the table onto the carpeted floor. The technicians stood back in shock as it writhed on the floor. The wires of the computer shot out of the bottom and meter long tendrils emerged and grabbed the two engineers, killing them both. Doctor Strass quickly pulled the emergency button next to the door and the entire wing of the facility went into lockdown mode. The rooms were bathed in red light and alarms blaring over the site-wide intercom.
“This is a Class Yellow containment breach, all combat-ill personnel please exit the facility and enter an emergency shelter as soon as possible. Mobile Task Force agents are going to enter soon and recontain this anomaly.”
6749 burst through the one way glass on top of a researcher and electrocuted them. Doctor Strass and Doctor Zelle rushed out of the room and emerged in the hallway containing other anomalies. 6749 was fiddling with the door controls, opening to doors to the other chambers.
“Update: This is now a Code Purple containment breach. Multiple anomalies are escaping containment. Anomalous Task Force-64 has been notified and is approaching Site-89. All combat-ill personnel enter an emergency shelter and do not open the door for any personnel without visually confirming their identity as 6701 has breached containment.”
As Strass and Zelle ran down the hallway, the containment chambers behind them began opening. Screams could be heard behind them as the doors opened and the lights flashed red. Different entities could be heard producing different noises: There were hisses, grinding of gears, distorted speech, chalkboard scraping, and piercing chirps coming from behind them. Task Force agents with rifles ran past them and began firing at the monsters. They dashed out of the hallway and through the main gate where they escaped into the safety of the Mobile Task Force units.
The two looked at each other exasperated, the crowd of scientists huddling around the field outside of the site. Amanda looked at Sam with tired breaths.
“Just a normal day.” she smiled.
