Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-XXXX is currently kept and maintained in an 8x8m open air containment unit at Ecological research site Yngve, located close to the village of █████ in northern Sweden. Site Yngve is to maintain a cover story, posing as an Ecological research centre, as well as blaming potential anomalies caused by SCP-XXXX on the civilian population. However, the cover story for Site Yngve is not entirely false, as the site should conduct ecological research surveys on the surrounding areas. This is partially done to prevent and repair any damage done to the ecosystem by SCP-XXXX, as well as to uphold the agreement between the Swedish government and the Foundation. The site need to always be equipped with a chainsaw, several standard issue woodcutting axes, and a numbers of animals, see addendum XXXX-A. Site Yngve should at all times be staffed with a veterinarian, a zoologist, and a linguistics expert in proto-Nordic languages.
Description.
SCP-XXXX is a Silver birch of the species Betula Pendula secured by the Foundation in ████ on the behest of the Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, and Soviet governments. As the group previously in possession of SCP-XXXX, named “Menders of Ygdrasill”, were becoming increasingly erratic and violent. During the operation to secure SCP-XXXX from the cult, the task force failed at leaving any members alive for questioning about the nature of SCP-XXXX, which has led to difficulties in understanding SCP-XXXX’s exact nature.
SCP-XXXX does in no way display any cosmetic properties that would set it apart from any other tree of the same species. But during the winter solstice each year, usually starting around Dec 21, SCP-XXXX will display its primary anomalous effect. Several runes, identified to me an older version of Norse futhark will appear on the stem of SCP-XXXX. The runes will appear as if they were carved in with a primitive tool.
The message displayed on SCP-XXXX always begins with a request to be brought something, followed by the thing requested. As of the writing of this entry every request so far have been an animal. However, Foundation personnel staffed at site Yngve should be aware of that the request may change in the future.
When SCP-XXXX displays the request a countdown starts, and the crew of site Yngve will have until midnight the following day to provide SCP-XXXX with the requested animal. When the animal is provided SCP-XXXX will reach down with its soft branches in a tendril like fashion, grabbing the animal, hanging it by the legs in an improvised snare for 6 days. It should be noted that the animal in question will not die by asphyxiation or blood rupturing during this time, as most of the animals normally would, instead the animal will be kept docile and alive, until day six.
During the last day the animal’s stomach will suddenly split open from the inside, and high quality mulch will pour out from the deceased animal’s chest cavity, and after a few minutes the entire animal itself will become mulch. After this occurs, the runes previously seen on SCP-XXXX will disappear, and not re appear until the following year.
If SCP-XXXX’s demands are met within the time limit, and the correct animal is provided, SCP-XXXX will appear much healthier than before, and studies of the bark and leaves of SCP-XXXX have proven that its health is in much greater condition. Usually superseding the health of a normal Birch of the same Species.
However, if SCP-XXXX’s request is not met within the time limit, or if the wrong animal is provided. SCP-XXXX’s secondary anomalous effect will be activated. Upon failing the request SCP-XXXX will be in a noticeably less healthy state, and during the next year, the local ecological system will suffer drastic changes to its flora and fauna. Usually resulting in a Y-class ecological shift. See addendum XXXX-B for incident reports.
Addendum A:
List of animal on site.
List of animals
Four of each of the animals listedmust be kept on site at all times. Their wellbeing, and the breeding of new animals will be overseen by the onsite zoologist and/or veterinarian.
- Any snake of the following breeds: Vipera Berus or Natrix Natrix. However, the latter is recommended due to ease of keeping and lack of venom.
- Any fish in the Salmonidae family.
- Wolfs of the family Canis Lupus. Observe that wolves are under no circumstances to be taken from the local wildlife, as the Scandinavian population of Canis Lupus is severely damaged, only numbering in about 300 specimens. All wolves needed are to be brought in from Russia and breed on site, as per the agreement with the Swedish government.
- Any bird of the Falconidae family. Smaller birds or any type of domesticated hen have proven to not be accepted by SCP-X, and trying to sacrifice them will result in the activation of its secondary anomalous effect. Why this is the case is still unknown.
- Any animal of the Cervidae family, also known as deer.
- Any animal of the Sciuridae family, also known as squirrels. SCP-XXXX may request a rodent. But as proven by many troubling years of trial and error, only squirrels suffice. Why SCP-XXXX states that it wants rodents but only accept squirrels is still unknown. Possible connection to the Norse myth of Rattatoskr is ongoing.
- Any human of any gender, nationality, ethnicity, or condition of health. Site Yngve should host at least 2 D-class personnel at all times.
Addendum B.
Incident reports.
Incident report XXXX-I-18
In ████, site Yngve failed to provide a snake to SCP-XXXX. This was due to a mistake made by the onsite translator, where they misinterpreted the word for snake as that of eel. The wrong animal was provided to SCP-XXXX and the secondary effect was immediately observable. SCP-XXXX began to wither, and during the following months, the ecological research team noticed an extreme absence of snakes in the ███████████ area. This resulted in an unprecedented explosion in the local population of Rats, squirrels, mice, and other small rodents. Several towns had to be evacuated due to the swarms of rats infesting the town. A cover story was set in place and the incident was blamed on the local populations’ lack of proper garbage disposal. Upon fulfilling SCP-XXXX’s request the following winter solstice, the ecological effect was somewhat diminished, but the local ecosystem suffered the consequences for several years.
Incident report XXXX-I-29
In ████ the personnel failed to procure a wolf before the time limit was reached, and SCP-XXXX’s secondary anomalous effect was activated. During the following year, the local predatory population almost disappeared completely, wolves, bears, and wolverines, were almost unseen during the year, and the few specimens that were captured were all sick and/or dying. The lack of major predators in the eco system prompted an explosion in the herbivore population, and several areas became almost entirely devoid of life as the herbivores ate everything in their path. Several hunting groups were established, both from Foundation Personnel and from local hunting groups in an attempt to quell the local herbivore population. But the herbivores seemed to procreate faster than they could be put down, and the effort was proven to be futile. A cover story was spread, which blamed the increase in herbivores on poaching of the local bear, wolf, and wolverine populations.
Incident report XXXX-I-30
One year after incident XXXX-I-29, the crew at site Yngve failed to meet the requests yet again, this time failing to provide SCP-XXXX with a bird. The onsite zoologist, Dr. ██████ attempted to give SCP-XXXX an ordinary hen purchased at ███████s family farm. He explained that he did this because he had grown fond of the falcons kept on site and that he didn’t want to sacrifice them. Dr. ███████ was let go of his employment, and standard firing procedures were kept. The result of this was an absolutely massive increase in the local insect populations, and a massive decrease of birds. Massive swarms of mosquitos, flies, dragonflies, and 50 more insect species were found in an area. The onsite director, Dr.████ noted that this was the first time that SCP-XXXX’s demands were failed to be met twice in a row. Dr. ████ believes this is why SCP-XXXX’s health was considerably worse the following year, and why the ecological impact was spread almost twice as far this time reaching over ██████████████. Dr. ████ also firmly believes that if failure to meet the demands of SCP-XXXX enough years in a row would potentially kill it, possibly resulting in an XK-Class end of the world scenario, where the earth’s eco system would potentially be damage beyond repair.
