SCP-5498

Item #: SCP-5498

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: The cell, and an area of 23 meters surrounding the cell containing SCP-5498, are to be constantly flooded in bright, LED lights. Bulbs are to be changed bi-weekly to prevent burn out. All lights, and central power systems in Site 5498 are to be connected to no less than five back up generators at any given time. No physical objects or personnel are to enter the cell without 05 approval for experimentation. Absolutely no physical contact is allowed with SCP-5498, and organisms that touch SCP-5498 are to be terminated.

Description: SCP-5498 is a large1 creature of unknown origin, physically resembling a reptile, and has no discovered sex organs or means of reproduction. SCP-5498 does not possess eyes, and is believed to hunt primarily using sound2. SCP-5498 is covered in translucent scales, genetic testing revealing they posses both alpha and beta-keratin cells, as found in normal reptile scales, however, DNA from █████ different human genomes were found in tissues as well, although it was inactive and unexpressed in the entity. SCP-5498 is carnivorous, and will attempt to attack and consume any living organisms near it, using large talons and fangs. Despite this, SCP-5498 does not appear to need sustenance to survive. Physical contact with SCP-5498 will cause permanent blindness, as it secretes a fluid, here on designated SCP-5498-1, that causes rapid pressure build up behind the eyes, similar to glaucoma, which permanently damages the optic nerve. This is believed to help SCP-5498 with hunting. Further testing on the effects SCP-5498-1 can be found in Addendum-5498.1.

SCP-5498's offensive anomalous trait is its ability to move through darkness. Specifically, SCP-5498 has the ability to "vanish" when no visible light touches it, reappearing in a different area devoid of light. Experimentation revealed with appears to have an outer limit of 21.73 meters. When active, SCP-5498 appears to know instinctively when there is an area large enough that it can transfer to within it's radius, as it will attempt to transport itself almost immediately when an opportunity arises. SCP-5498 will keep part of its body in the shadows, even when attacking.

Counter to this, it was discovered that SCP-5498 is incapable of movement if 80% of its body is covered in light3 . Containment revolves around ensuring SCP-5498 is bathed by light at all times, as a large enough shadow covering it will allow it to move.

Discovery: SCP-5498 was discovered in a cave on 8/1/14, in ████ cave, Nepal, when a large number of spelunkers had gone missing. Upon investigation, SCP-5498 was discovered, and gave chase to the team, vanishing through the darkness of the cave. █ staff members were killed by SCP-5498, and it's inability to move in direct light was revealed when it tried to chase the team outside the cave, freezing itself in place. It is hypothesized that SCP-5498, however old it is, had never seen sunlight before, and seemed unaware of the biological effect it would have on it. Later investigation turned up ruins in the cave, translated as "In many eons, we will all be one with the Nāga".

Incident Report 1: A containment breached occurred on 12/12/15, which resulted in the deaths of ██ staff members, including the later termination of █ blinded staff members blinded and infected by exposure to SCP-5498-1, leading to the discovery of it's reproductive properties. SCP-5498 was re-contained by shining lights near it and herding it back into its containment cells, then flooding it with light, freezing it in place.

Addendum-5498.1: Testing of SCP-5498-1

Test A - 2/6/16

Subject: One bonobo chimpanzee, (Pan paniscus), selected due to its close genetic relation with homo sapiens.
Procedure: A chimpanzee was placed in an observable cell, and splashed remotely with a sample of SCP-5498-1 to observe the effects.
0900: Subject began wandering around the cell, tapping and stumbling at walls. Blindness appears to have taken full effect.
1000: Subject frantically scratches its arms and legs, which began developing translucent scales.
1100: Subject, covered in scales resembling SCP-5498, howls and collapses. Subject did not survive the procedure. Subject did not excrete SCP-5498-1.
Analysis: Autopsy reports revealed mostly Pan paniscus DNA, despite the physical appearance of subject.
Findings: I believe that this fluid rewrites the genome of the species it infects, inactivating the genes normally expressed. Besides SCP-5498 unknown DNA, only human DNA was found in the genome, though inactive. I believe the effects of SCP-5498 will only complete on a human test subject. -Dr.Adam

Test B - 4/1/16

Subject: D-47284
Procedure: D-47284 was placed in an observable cell, and instructed to rub SCP-5498-1 on his arm. Subject complied.
0700: D-47284 claimed to have an incredibly painful migraine, and panicked upon their vision failing.
0800: D-47284 complained of itchy skin, which began to take on a translucent hue. Subject also complained the cell was "too bright", despite blindness being confirmed.
1000: D-47284's skin began to change into scales, which D-47284 complained was painful, but not overwhelmingly so, although they did request the lights be turned down. Request denied.
1100: D-47284 frequently attempts communication, but is unable to properly vocalize language, growling and staring at the glass. Liquid is observed dripping from D-47284, and was later analyzed to be SCP-5498-1.
1300: D-47284, now visually indistinguishable from SCP-5498, begins to charge at the glass, attempting to break through. Despite emergency protocol being activated and the cell flooded in light, a member of security discharged a bullet into D-47284, killing the subject. Security member ██████ was reprimanded, and later transferred for this incident, as it would interfere with autopsy results.
Analysis: Autopsy reports revealed a mostly human genome, with traces on an unknown chemical compound found in individual cells. Human DNA inside D-47284 was present, but inactive, suggested it is used as base for SCP-5498 to develop.
Findings: It is my request that ██████ be transferred immediately. We do not know if D-47284 would have survived a full mutation, and security protocols would have left it frozen but alive. Requesting a retrial of these effects on a different D-class4. -Dr.Adam
