Item #: SCP-3296

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3296 is to be kept in a 0.5x0.5x0.5 meter lock box located on Site-49. Direct access to SCP-3296 is granted to personnel clearing Level 2 clearance, and should be checked bi-hourly to confirm it's presence. In the event SCP-3296 is no longer present in it's containment location, MTF Pi-1 should be dispatched to the New York Metropolitan Area, as well as the Chicago metropolitan area in a recovery effort.

Description: SCP-3296 is a dark grey pinstripe fedora style hat, 4.5 inches in height and 8 inches in length. No tags, logos or other identifying features on SCP-3296 have been discovered. SCP-3296's composition consists of a cotton & polyester blend of material, as well as a leather band around the crown. Attempts to damage, destroy, or modify SCP-3296 have been unsuccessful.

SCP-3296's anomalous properties begin when it is placed on any male or female humanoid's head, as long as the following requirements are met:

  • The subject's skin complexion is Caucasian
  • The subject is above the age of 18 years
  • The subject was born, raised in, or currently lives within a 150km radius of a metropolitan area located in the United States
  • The subject fluently speaks, reads, and writes in the English language
  • The subject's occupation or past occupations must not relate to the United States Criminal Justice system
  • SCP-3296 is tilted at least 15° angled downwards, shading the subject's eyes

Once a subject meeting this criteria places the hat on his or her head, they immediately take on the persona of a mid-1900's mobster. Male subjects are noted as only responding to contact when referred to as 'Johnny', while female subjects respond to 'Darling'. SCP-3296 will adjust it's size according to the subject's head, and will form a comfortable fit.

When offered alcohol, subjects intermittently refuse, insisting "[they] ain't fallin' for no goddamn pigs' tricks". Within 2 minutes of the subject wearing SCP-3296, the subject will reach into his or her pocket and remove a large, unbranded cigar.1. The cigar will then begin to burn, and the subject will smoke the cigar until completely burnt out. Examination of a cigar recovered from a trial revealed the cigar was capable of burning underwater, and exhibited no heat while lit. When SCP-3296 is removed from the subject, all exhibited anomalous properties cease, and the subject has no recollection of the events that took place. An interview of one of these subjects can be found below.

SCP-3296 has been noted as occasionally relocating itself from it's containment area. SCP-3296 has been recovered a total of eight times from the Chicago metropolitan area, it's original discovery location in 19██, and three times from the New York metropolitan area.
