Item #: SCP-X

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-X is contained within Site-719, a cave in southern Washington, USA, on Mt. St. Helens. Site-719 is a lava cave created by the volcano it sits on. The site is to be always fully staffed with a full research team, supporting staff, and a small containment team.

Several other caves exist in the region, these natural lava caves are for tourist use, which helps to quell curiosity regarding Site-719. Ideally, people should think Site-719 is just another cave that happens to be used for researching the volcano.

A containment team is to be kept on the facility at all times in the event of a containment breach. Trespassers are to be interrogated, administered level-C Amnesiacs, and set free near the tourist caves nearby.

SCP-X Is to be contained in a room of 5 foot thick concrete walls, floor, and ceiling at the back of the cave. The room measures 35 meters from edge to edge. (Approximately 49.49 meters from corner to corner.) No light is to be let into the box unless for testing or containment purposes, which must be approved by any level-3 personnel. During tests, a light of no more power than 30 lumens should be used for testing, and at no spot on SCP-X should the lux exceed 2000.

Description: SCP-X is a black circular shadow measuring 18.42 meters in diameter, meaning it is about 266.48 square meters. SCP-X's darkness is unaffected by any light shined on it, always appearing to be the same. Tests performed to determine the cause of the shadow have proven unsuccessful. SCP-X is shown to be agitated by light. If any light makes contact with SCP-X, it will slowly try to move away from the source of the light. The brighter the light, and closer to the center of the shadow any light is, the more agitated SCP-X will become.

SCP-X has no effects on people merely looking at it, or nearby to it. walking onto the SCP-X will cause gradual permanent blindness, which becomes stronger based on how close to the center of the shadow the subject is, and how long the subject has been on the shadow. The vision of test subjects is permanently impacted. The vision damage caused by SCP-X is currently unmitigable, with glasses, contact lenses, and various attempted eye surgeries having no impact on vision. Once the subject becomes too blinded to see outside of the shadow, they will gradually be pulled to the down into the floor of the shadow. While the subject is shown to panic, struggling to escape and calling for help, no test subject has successfully escaped after they begin to descend into the floor.

Once subjects reach the middle of the shadow, they are gradually pulled downwards into the ground, a process that can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 24 hours, seemingly randomly. Further tests to attempt to find out the fate of the subjects have proven unsuccessful.

The effects of SCP-X are shown to be weakened or completely nullified if a source of light shining on or near it is weakened or removed. Conversely, the more light near SCP-X, the stronger its effects will become. If no there is total darkness, Scp-X will have no impacts on test subjects.

Update: Following test ███-██-████, SCP-X has been reclassified as sentient. The intelligence of SCP-X is currently unknown, but intelligence tests will be rendered soon.

Update: Attempts to measure intelligence through various tests have failed, and future tests have been suspended due to risks of causing a containment breach.

Addendum: Non-organic material identified as previously belonging to ████████ █████, a research assistant who disappeared ██ years ago during incident 225-190 was found in the forest about 6.32 kilometers away from site-719. Items found in the pile of items include clothing, a watch, a metal hip replacement, 2 teeth crowns, and small pieces of dental amalgam believed to be from past dental fillings. A search for other items in the nearby area yielded no results. The witness who found the items was administered level-C Amnesiacs, monitored for 24 hours and released near the tourist caves.

Incident-Report: 225-190

Date: ██-██-██

Location of incident: Site 719

Description: After approval of test ███-██-████, a 90 lumen light was shined in the middle of SCP-X from directly above by 8 meters. This exposed SCP-X to approximately 5875 lux of light at the center. The high light levels overwhelmed SCP-X, causing it to become extremely dangerous and difficult to contain. as SCP-X attempted to escape the facility, it managed to break into the safe observation room, absorbing the head researcher Dr.██████, as well as 7 other assistants. Attempts to contain SCP-X failed at first. However, once power was temporarily cut to the facility in an attempt to reduce light in the cave as much as possible, SCP-X was calmed enough to where it was slowly pushed back towards its containment chambers using low levels of light. In total 12 people disappeared in the incident, 8 researchers, and 4 Class-D personnel. During the incident, SCP-X was documented as omitting noises for the first time. While usually completely quiet, during the breach screams were heard coming from the center of the shadow.
