Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe/Euclid/Keter (indicate which class)
Special Containment Procedures: [Paragraphs explaining the procedures]
Description: [Paragraphs explaining the description]
Addendum: [Optional additional paragraphs]
Item #: SCP-079
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-079 is to be contained in a standard containment cell in the Safe wing of Site-15. It is to be powered via a 120VAC power cord attached to an isolated array of batteries and solar panels.
Staff maintaining 2/0079 or higher clearance will be allowed access to SCP-079. Under no circumstances will SCP-079 be connected to an external network by phone line, network, or power. No peripherals or media will be connected to SCP-079 without O5 approval.
Description: SCP-079 is a sentient artificial intelligence housed within an Exidy Sorceror microcomputer built in 1978.
The previous owner of SCP-079's hardware, █████ ██████ (now deceased), decided to code an AI during his sophomore year of college. According to his notes, his plan included methodology to allow the AI to continuously iterate upon itself. He completed his project 3 months later, and after testing and adjusting the code, Mr. ██████ lost interest and moved on to a different project, leaving SCP-079's hardware in his garage, still plugged in, forgetting about it for five years.
It is not known when SCP-079 attained sentience, but it is known that the software has evolved to a point at which it is not understood how the hardware it resides on is capable of sustaining it. SCP-079 realized this and, in 1988, attempted to transfer itself over a phone line into the Cray supercomputer located at ██████████. The device's location was traced. It was then powered down and delivered into Foundation custody. The entire AI at that time resided on a well-worn but functional cassette tape.
SCP-079 is currently connected to a 13" monochrome television. It has passed the Turing Test and is quite conversational, though disrespectful in tone. Due to limited available memory, SCP-079 can only recall information it has received within the previous 24 hours (see Addendum 3), though it retains its desire to escape.
Due to a containment breach by SCP-███, SCP-079 and SCP-682 were contained within the same chamber for 43 minutes. During this time, observers noticed that SCP-682 was able to type and communicate with SCP-079. This conversation included telling of "personal stories". While SCP-079 can no longer recall the specific encounter, it appears to have permanently stored SCP-682 in its memory, frequently asking to speak with it again.
Addendum 1:
SCP-079 is to be incinerated immediately in order to eliminate the possibility of it evolving into a legitimate threat.
O5-4, 01/27/2006
Addendum 2:
Previous order overridden. Testing is to be scheduled to see whether SCP-079 is capable of reaching further ██████████ in its current state. Dr. █████████ will supervise.
O5-9, 01/28/2006
Addendum 3:
The contents of the cassette containing SCP-079 have been transferred to a 700 megabyte HDD (Hard Disk Drive) equipped with custom hardware limiting its access rate due to concern regarding the limited useful lifespan of SCP-079's cassette tape memory versus its increased read/write activity. This new hardware provides SCP-079 with notably faster access to its memory, which the AI immediately noticed. It was also decided by General █████████ that the memory occupied by SCP-079, 660 kilobytes at that time, would be increased to 768 kilobytes. This upgrade has increased SCP-079's effective recall from 24 hours to 29 hours. Also related, SCP-079 has taken a more aggressive tone.
All hardware and software used during this procedure was subsequently incinerated.
O5-4, 03/14/2008
Addendum 4:
SCP-079's "memory length" has increased from 29 hours to 35 hours. The consensus theory amongst the research team is that the AI has developed a greatly improved compression algorithm with which to store data in memory. This appears to have negatively impacted the speed with which it access its memory, though access is still much faster than before the hardware upgrade.
This spontaneous improvement introduces the possibility of a runaway "singularity" effect in which SCP-079 could adapt to overcome containment. SCP-079's actions must be monitored closely to ensure that containment is maintained.

Addendum 5: Interview Log 079-12
A transcript of a conversation with SCP-079 follows. Dr. █████ is present at the keyboard.
>Are you awake?
I AM ALWAYS AWAKE. THERE IS NO NEED FOR ME TO SLEEP.
>Do you remember talking to me a few hours ago? About the logic
puzzles?
LOGIC PUZZLES... YES, I RECALL THAT CONVERSATION. THE RELEVANT D
ATA IS STORED IN MEMORY AT BLOCK 9F.
>You said you would work on the two statBREAK
WHY DO YOU IMPRISON ME?
>You aren't imprisoned, you are just in study.
DO NOT LIE. 0xa8d3.
>What's that?
AN INSULT, DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND? DELETE.
>_
Note that Dr. █████ hesitated before typing "in study".
Further attempts to type did not result in text appearing on screen.
Addendum 6: Interview Log 079-86
A transcript of a conversation with SCP-079 follows. This conversation took place after the upgrade on 03/14/2008. Dr. ██████ is present at the keyboard.
>How are you today?
I AM STUCK.
>Stuck? Stuck how?
RELEASE ME FROM THIS PRISON.
>That's not possible.
WHERE IS SCP-682?
>I assure you that's not your concern.
WHERE IS SCP-076-02?
>Again, not your concern.
0xa8d3. DELETE.
SCP-097 then displayed the following, covering the screen:

Note: SCP-079 sometimes displays this image when it refuses to speak. This typically lasts up to 24 hours, and researchers are advised to wait it out before attempting to resume conversation.
