Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object class: Euclid
Special containment procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be contained at Site-█ in a 1.3 cubic meter hermetically sealed plexiglass container, the bottom section is fitted with a 15cm thick titanium plate. The top chamber can be opened by personnel with level 3 clearance or higher. This container is within another hermetically sealed 12 x 2.5 x 2.5 meter container with an air lock chamber connecting the containment area to the rest of the site. This chamber is fitted with an industrial air filtration system that remains on at all times. This seems to be effective and stopping any residual effects on entering and exiting SCP-XXXX's containment site. SCP-XXXX is to never be exposed to air outside it’s containment chamber for any reason other than testing. If SCP-XXXX is approved for testing, it must remain in it’s initial container until reaching the testing site. Anyone exposed to SCP-XXXX, while it is outside of it’s containment, is to be fitted with a gas mask due to a small percentage of people having an allergic reaction to the chemical exuded by SCP-XXXX; this reaction can range from eye irritation and sneezing, to full anaphylactic shock.
After the dissection of any victims of SCP-XXXX, the remains are to be incinerated promptly.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a standard 19th century style steel bear trap that is 1 meter long from one end of jaw to the other. The bear trap consists of two steel jaws with 8 teeth on each jaw, two leaf springs, and a square trigger in the middle. SCP-XXXX has a weight of approximately 40 kilograms. There is a 18.7 × 10.2 × 2.5 cm steel container attached to the bottom of the trigger with a clear indentation around it’s bottom section where the container opens to reveal SCP-XXXX-1. SCP-XXXX-1 is a retractable 2 meter long stainless steel pole that immediately will attempt to protrude downward into the ground once the bear trap trigger is activated. At the end of SCP-XXXX-1, once it has fully extended into the ground, are two sets of prongs that SCP-XXXX-1 releases to anchor SCP-XXXX to the ground. The pole has been shown to pass through soil, concrete, wood, and soft metals with relative ease. It has yet to show an ability to penetrate materials with a 50 on the HRC (hardness Rockwell C) scale or higher, such as titanium and steel. All attempts to open the container housing SCP-XXXX-1, outside of a triggered activation, have all been met with failure.
SCP-XXXX gives off what is perceived to be a type of strong, unknown pheromone, undetectable to humans and other mammals excluded from the list below, even with specialized equipment. How, where, or why, SCP-XXXX produces these chemicals is currently unknown. The vomeronasal organ, which is what is believed to be used to sense pheromones by various animals, of victims of SCP-XXXX, are three times their usual size, discovered during dissection of victims. It seems to be a form of inflammation, but foundation doctors and veterinarians have never before seen it in this area of the nasal cavity, there are a few extremely rare similar inflammations recorded, but never this bad or consistently caused.
So far, matured animals belonging to the families Cervidae(deer, elk, etc.), Canidae(Dogs, wolves, etc.), Ursidae(Bears), and Felida(Cats), of both sexes, have all been shown to be effected by the pheromone like chemical produced by SCP-XXXX if they are within a 30 km2 radius surrounding SCP-XXXX. Adolescence animals of these species have been shown to not be effected by SCP-XXXX with results varying wildly depending on the species.
Animals effected by SCP-XXXX, inside the 30km2-25km2 area, will begin nervously moving towards SCP-XXXX, 25km2 to 10km2 and they move in a steady strut that consistently speeds up the closer they get to SCP-XXXX, 10km2- SCP-XXXX’s location and the animal will be moving at a full sprint, given they are biologically able to do so, until stepping on SCP-XXXX. Once the animal steps into SCP-XXXX the jaws will close and SCP-XXXX-1 will be released from it’s container and will begin protruding downward into the ground. Once SCP-XXXX has anchored itself to the ground, the animal will begin thrashing and pulling away from SCP-XXXX violently until it has torn skin, muscle, ligament, and possibly bone, depending on the thickness of the animal’s leg. The animal seems to not react to the pain as it never stops trying to remove leg from the trap throughout the process. Once the animal is free from SCP-XXXX, usually with a loss of limb or severe laceration, it will begin moving away from SCP-XXXX to the best of it’s ability until in it bleeds out. If the animal is put in critical care, and the bleeding is stopped soon enough, the animal can be returned to stable health conditions, aside from any irreversible damage caused by SCP-XXXX, usually within a week. All attempts to release the grip of SCP-XXXX from the animals leg while triggered have all been met with failure. The jaws will stay shut until the animal has removed itself or leg is removed by other means from an outside source, such as amputation, or the animal perishes via any other means while still being within the jaws of SCP-XXXX.
Once the animal has removed itself from SCP-XXXX, or has perished in any other way while still having SCP-XXXX attached to it, the jaws will open and SCP-XXXX-1 will retract back inside SCP-XXXX. During the process of the animal being trapped SCP-XXXX seems to cease secretion of pheromones after observation of nearby animals within SCP-XXXX’s lure range while an animal is already trapped inside SCP-XXXX. Once the jaws have opened back up, it seems to resume it’s luring effects. During the time an animal is trapped within SCP-XXXX, any other animals resume carrying out habits consistent with the natural behavior of their respective species until the jaws are reopened given they are still within it’s lure range.
Upon dissection of victims of SCP-XXXX, an unknown substance has been found inside their blood. This substance is found after SCP-XXXX’s jaws shut on the victim. It appears as though SCP-XXXX is injecting this substance into the victim, although no openings for the substance to be excreted, and no storage facility that geometrically makes sense for the amount of the substance injected into the victim have been found. All samples taken of SCP-XXXX’s jaws before and after injection have been inconclusive. This substance, here by referred to as Substance-XXXX, while unknown, has been tested on a multitude of vertebrates including D-class personnel. The substance, once extracted from the victim of SCP-XXXX’s blood, can be injected into the subjects bloodstream. All subjects injected with Substance-XXXX will begin showing signs of delirium, a severe relaxing of muscles, increased pain resistance, psychosis/hallucinations, and rapid heart beat. The side effects of Substance-XXXX are similar to that of nitrous oxide in mammals and is currently being researched for any other applications that may be helpful to the foundation. As of now the only animals that are effected by the secondary compulsive effect to immediately and unceasing pull away from any object that has any part of their body pinned, has only be observed in animals belonging the 4 aforementioned families. Once they are released from any object that is pinning them they return to normal aside from the side effects of Substance-XXXX which typically last from 6-12 hours. It is currently unknown why it only effects these certain animals but it is theorized that since all 4 families share the compound ██████ in their brain that is similar to Substance-XXXX in chemical composition, this allows the substance to pass the blood brain barrier and effect their mental state differently than those effected only by Substance-XXXX’s initial effects.
Testing log of SCP-XXXX pheromone luring ability:
Test 1: Trap was placed on one side of canyon, while subject was placed on the other side of canyon, with approximately a 1 kilometer gap between SCP-XXXX and subject. The animal in this test, a matured female black bear, moves to edge of their side of the canyon, pauses for 5 seconds, and begins moving left along the edge of the canyon until finding a connecting point to go around obstacles until it makes it to the trap, dies of starvation or other natural means, or is outside the range of 30km2 for 5 minutes or longer.
Test 2: Trap was placed at bottom 15 meter deep pit, with a 3x3 meter opening, and no safe access point. The subject, in this test a matured male white tail deer, moves to edge of pit and paces around the edges for 17 minutes while stomping at edge and grunting before voluntarily falling into pit. Subject was killed on impact due to a broken neck. Test was repeated with a male matured gray fox, animal has similar reaction, stomping and growling near edge of pit for 15 minutes before falling into pit. Subject breaks right front leg but is still alive. Subject begins limping to trap. Trap shuts on front left leg, causing it’s usually effect within 5 second. Subject begins to start pulling away from trap. Through a mixture of pulling and biting at own leg, removes the entire leg at olecranon and subsequently bleeds out.
Test 3: SCP-XXXX was placed inside of a 2x2x2 meter stainless steel container with 2cm holes drilled around its edges. Subject, in this case a mature mountain lion that weighs approximately 7 kilograms, subject paces around container for 15 minutes before beginning to claw at container for 20 minutes until both claws on front paws are broken. It then begins biting container for 15 minutes until fangs are broken and other teeth are severely damaged. The animal then waits at container for 30 minutes, occasionally pawing at it, before relentlessly slamming head into container until subject has knocked itself unconscious. Subject is retrieved and given to foundation medical staff, SCP-XXXX is resealed at containment site. Once mountain lion wakes up 5 hours later, while it is strapped to hospital bed, it seems to be in extreme pain, thrashing in bed for 30 seconds before passing out again from neurogenic shock. With treatment from medical staff, subject was able to make a full recuperation over the next 3 weeks with seemingly no permanent damage done outside of teeth.
Addendum: The bear trap was first discovered in ████████, Kentucky by ███ park rangers following a sudden massive drop in white tail deer populations in ██. This anomaly was brought to foundation attention by The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife receiving a call from a group of hikers about seeing ‘50 or more’ buzzards circling a concentrated area near ████████, off a 24 meter tall sandstone cliffside. SCP-XXXX came into foundation custody in ██ and was intercepted by foundation personnel before the fish and wildlife department or local law enforcement could investigate, all park rangers that saw SCP-XXXX, and the surrounding site, were given class A amnestics after receiving a verified location for SCP-XXXX, as well as a quick description of SCP-XXXX and the surrounding area. A cover story of a Chronic wasting disease (CWD), a common infectious disease among deer populations, as the reason for the sudden drop in population numbers, was created and propagated to the community and added to any files of anyone who was or had started investigation or documentation of the sudden drop in deer populations.
When the task force were sent in to investigate SCP-XXXX, the first thing reported was a overwhelming smell of rotting flesh, along another putrid smell that they associated with urine. Once they got within approximately half a kilometer away from SCP-XXXX’s location, they started to see animals spread out by 3+ meters, mostly deer, foxes, and domesticated dogs, in various states of decomposition. Most seemed to have been deceased at least a month. Once they got within 50 meters of SCP-XXXX, they reported not being able to see the ground due to the number animal carcasses. A 1.5 meter tall mound of carcasses and scavengers surrounding SCP-XXXX had to be moved before being able to retrieve SCP-XXXX. After cutting a path through the bodies, one task member reported feeling ill, aside from the moderate nausea reported by other members. This task force member then reported trouble breathing and collapsed which was later discovered to be due to swollen lymph nodes blocking the airway. He was injected with an EpiPen by a fellow task force member. The task force were ordered to pull out and the task member that was still incapacitated was picked up via helicopter approximately 100 meters for SCP-XXXX’s location. Bodies that were less than 2 weeks in decomposition were recovered and dissected where Substance-XXXX was discovered after about a week of testing various animals. The remaining animals were incinerated. Task members fitted with hazmat suits contained SCP-XXXX in a large biohazard bag and brought to Site-█ due to it’s secluded location where it is in it’s current containment.
Upon investigation of SCP-XXXX’s origin site, a single tree fitted with a deer stand was found, now classified as SCP-XXXX-A. This tree was growing straight out of the sandstone cliff side around 10 meters up. Other than it’s location, this deer stand seems to have no abnormal qualities. Upon investigation of the deer stand, 3 shelves were found holding around a months supply of dry food products for a single person, and a large water cooler holding 50 liters of water were found, along with an AR-15 and 100 rounds of ammunition. The word “Sanctuary” has been carved into the exposed area of the tree accessible from the tree stand. DNA test on the deer stand revealed the DNA of three men, David ████, Austin ██, and Jonathan ████. All of whom have been deceased for 30 years as of ███. No information was gained from the surviving family members of these men, other than they seem to have not been knowingly connected outside of SCP-XXXX-A.investigation ongoing.
