Mary Thompson's alarm went off. The outside was as dark as black coffee. It was around 4:45 am. She looked at her husband who was fast asleep. She looked into her closet and grabbed a plain white shirt along with long jeans. She combed her long blond hair & tied it up. After that, she went to the kitchen and took a piece of bread. She inserted it into the toaster and poured herself some coffee that brewed overnight. She looked in the fridge to find a coffee creamer labeled Holiday
The reason why she woke up this early is because she is a researcher for the SCP foundation. After her husband lost his job at a fashion company's sale marketing team because it went bankrupt, Mary wanted to find a way to get more money. She encountered a man who was fascinated by her past experiences working at a lab where they had tested medicine along with her good grades she acquired when she was in college. The man had read her resume & invited her to work at the SCP Foundation. This would allow her to get more money so she could support her husband. She also had to keep her information about her job a secret due to how dangerous the creatures she'd be working with were. Mary swiftly ate and drank before driving off.
She took her route towards the site and arrived at the security gate. The man at the booth had to check her identity. Mary gave him her license.
"Mary Thompson eh?" The security guy asked.
"Yeah that's me." She replied.
The guard compared the image on the license to her & approved that it was her. Mary went through the entrance and inside the building. At the site, every scientist was given an experiment to do or observe an SCP. Today, Mary was given an experiment. This experiment was for SCP 2107. It was recommended that she brought along a guard with her. She made her way to the closest Class D cell block where her Level-2 security was waiting for her.
"So you must be… Mary Thompson right?" The Level-2 guard asked.
"Yep. I'm here for today's experiment." She told him as she hoped that she would only have to research SCPs.
"I'm Zach." The Level-2 told her.
Mary smiled at Zach. If there was anything that she enjoyed at the foundation, it would be the people who worked there. They were always interesting and trustworthy to her.
Mary looked at a line of Class Ds ready for tests.
"Hmmm, I'll take her. Right there. " Mary announced as Zach cuffed the Class D.
Mary, Zach, and the Class D headed for the containment cell. The silence of their walk was only interrupted by screams of other Class Ds.
To break the silence, Zach asked "So what are you doing for Christmas?"
"Uh, well um nothing much really," Mary replied in shock as no one really asked her any questions while heading to an experiment.
"Back when I worked at Site-20, I usually gave gifts to some of my friends there," Zach confidently answered.
Mary always found transfers from other sites to be interesting due to how their lives were always so different. After walking across many hallways, they reached the containment lockers. Mary searched for SCP 2107 as Zach watched over the Class D. After she unlocked it, Mary poured out 30 milliliters into a plastic cup.
"Alright Zach, so you know what you have to do?" Mary asked when they were traveling from the containment lockers to an active .
"Yes, guard the door and make sure it doesn't open. I was told to do that earlier." Zach informed Mary.
The Class D was shoved into the cell and given the cup with SCP 2107.
"Drink it," Mary commanded over the intercom.
The Class D drank the tiny amount of SCP 2107. Mary Thompson looked on the screen that was recording the events. After around a minute, the effects stopped and Mary Thompson went into the cell with the Class D.
"So, what was it like?" Mary questioned the Class D.
"These figures. They were all dark and I could barely see them. Like they were right next to me. I'm not sure about the lights though. They might be broken. They also spoke my name. It was soft and almost quiet," the Class D told in a shocked tone.
"Alright, testing is over. You're going back to your cell," Mary Thompson informed the Class D.
Mary walked back towards the break room. She ignored the cries of Class Ds in pain. She already heard enough of them and knew she couldn't halt progress on tests. She made her way towards the break room. In it was the SCP research "hand in". Scientists would put their research by SCP number in which another scientist would add it to the SCP file. Mary counted until she got her number. She sat on the couch in the break room to have lunch. A little after she ate, man walked up to her with papers in his hands.
"Thompson, could you please make a report on the research?" He asked.
"Sure thing," Mary replied while grabbed the papers.
She disliked how boring it was to write or add on to an article. Mary went into an empty office. The offices were there so that people could write files on SCPs or edit them to include new information. She went on the computer & compiled the research. With every sentence, her disgust grew. She disliked how the SCP was described in the research. She also hated that part of an article. After she finished her report, she saved it & submitted it to another researcher to for them to review & adjust. She went out of the office and relaxed once more on the couch. Later, she noticed a man with a brown beard & short hair. She recognized him as Daniel Terren who helped her in researching when she first joined.
"Hey Daniel, how have you been?" She asked to start small talk with him.
"Fine, I just did an experiment," he replied.
Mary questioned "How's your cat doing?"
"He's fine," he answered with an exhausted tone.
Daniel went towards the coffee pot to get a cup of coffee.
"How's your husband doing?" Daniel wondered as he poured coffee into the cup.
"He's fine, he is still taking care of the house." Mary explained as Daniel went for a creamer in the fridge.
"Uh-huh. Just a question. Does he ever want kids?" Daniel spoke while trying to keep the conversation alive.
"He kind of does, but I’m not sure about it," Mary depressing replied, "I’m thinking of getting him a pet for Christmas."
"Oh, what kind?" Daniel asked while sipping coffee.
"Um. Maybe a small puppy, or a kitten." Mary explained.
The conversation ended with screams coming from the chamber room nearby. Mary kept relaxing despite the noise while Daniel kept drinking his coffee.
"I'm gonna need more of these," Daniel joked.
Daniel, unlike Mary, worked more hours & also had to find applicants for researchers along with security. Daniel also went towards the prisons to get people who would become Class Ds. Daniel also was tasked with interviews with SCPs who could communicate.
Mary looked around for a clock. She saw the hands. It was around 3:32 PM.
"Well uh work is going to end soon for me, it was nice chatting with you again Daniel." Mary told him.
Daniel took his other arm and waved to Mary while he drank his coffee. Mary went into the hallway when all of a sudden she was ran into by a Class D. She watched as Zach and other Level 3s chased the rogue. Mary ran towards them, despite her lack of athletic abilities, but when she caught up the Class D was cuffed and sent to the special cells. The special cells were like solitary confinement. Most people there were used as test subjects for Keter SCPs. After the drama, Mary went to her car and drove off. At the security booth she pulled out her ID to the security guard. After that, it was the drive home. She went to her house and was greeted by her husband.
"Hey, how was work?" Eric Thompson, Mary's husband, questioned.
"Well uh, it was fine," she replied while getting a hug from Eric.
Eric Thompson had cooked medium rare steak with a side of salad. Mary enjoyed every bite of it. Her husband was a great chef, when he actually knew how to cook a recipe.
"So, how do you enjoy the steak?" Eric asked.
"It's pretty good," Mary responded.
After dinner, Mary and Eric watched TV. They sat next to each other and watched whatever was on TV.
"So um Mary, are you interested in going to a christmas party?" Eric suggested while an ad for some furniture played.
"If it was in the afternoon then probably yes. Why do you ask?" Mary answered.
"My parents wanted to host a christmas party on the 24th, they asked if we want to come." Eric explained.
"Sure why not," Mary responded and then marked it down on her calendar.
She checked her calendar. It was filled with mostly her going to work. She only got a day off on Saturday. After the episode ended, Mary went to the master bathroom to shower. She felt bad that she wasn't spending enough time with Eric however she remembered that she needed money & Eric doesn't mind being alone. After showering, she wrapped her body in a towel. While she got into her pajamas, she set the alarm on her phone for 4:30 to get up earlier. Once both of the activities were done she laid in bed and went to sleep.
