Figure 1: SCP-4XXX photographed in its temporary storage prior to rehousing

Item #: SCP-4XXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4XXX is to be held in a standard locked Foundation storage container, with an hourly visual inspection by assigned security staff. After further review of testing, SCP-4XXX is to be held in a standard Foundation humanoid containment cell and is to be remotely observed at all times by a rotating staff of security officers. Any damage to SCP-4XXX-1 is to be reported immediately and repairs carried out as soon as possible.

Description: SCP-4XXX is composed of two instances, SCP-4XXX-1 and SCP-4XXX-2. Both instances are constructed from non-anomalous materials, with the assigned research team conducting further detailed tests on SCP-4XXX as a whole.

SCP-4XXX-1 is a single sheet of clear, thick glass with rounded corners, forming the apparent surface of the table structure that is SCP-4XXX. It is attached by an unknown means to SCP-4XXX-2, with no glue or other adhesive substance detected. Low-grade vibrations have been recorded on SCP-4XXX-1, concentrated around the surface area where the knees and hands of SCP-4XXX-2 meet the sheet of glass.

SCP-4XXX-2 is a crude humanoid sculpture made from abnormally resistant cast iron. The instance is positioned in a permanent braced position on its back with its arms held out straight (see Figure 1 for reference). Simplistic facial features have been carved on the head of the sculpture, however it is noted to only feature one 'eye'. These facial features have never been observed to change, move or display any other emotion, but persons affected by SCP-4XXX have often stated that the face is weeping or in a state of upset.

Any persons found to touch the surface of SCP-4XXX-1 are overcome with a great sense of sadness or pity towards SCP-4XXX-2. This emotional response is noted to continue escalating over an approximate 10 hour period, where the affected person will not attempt or need to sleep or eat. The depressive state culminates in an overwhelming desire to break SCP-4XXX-1, going to great lengths and stress in order to do so. This mental state lasts for as long as the subject remains within the vicinity of SCP-4XXX, lapsing and falling into a listless and unresponsive state when breaking eye contact for more than 5 seconds. All affected persons have been observed to vocally express their intent to release or rescue SCP-4XXX-2 at high volume, often simply repeating "Free him" in varying states of distress. In total, ██ containment breaches have been attempted but all resulted in failure due to either Foundation intervention or a complete inability to cause a loss of structural integrity.

Following Interview Log 27-A, all scheduled material testing of SCP-4XXX-1 is suspended indefinitely. If I see even a paperclip inside that cell, you'll be terminated before you can say "gross misconduct".

Interview Log 27-A

Interviewed: D-3██

Interviewer: Dr. ██████

Foreword: Interview was conducted shortly after an attempted containment breach of SCP-4XXX by D-3██. Unlike previous persons, D-3██ remained lucid afterward and was questioned by Dr. ██████ prior to routine termination.
<Begin Log, skip to 00h-3m-41s>

Dr. ██████: Hello D-3██, do you understand where you are right now?

D-3██: We are in one of his jails, the layers of prison he is forced to endure.

Dr. ██████: Can you explain what you mean by this?

D-3██: He sinned, but has he not suffered enough from their condemnation? He transgressed, but has he not been tormented enough?

Dr. ██████: When you say 'he', are you referring to SCP-4XXX-2?

D-3██: (Laughs) You give him numbers and letters, but he has held far too great a weight to be defined by something so simple and small.

Dr. ██████: Well, what do you call him?

D-3██: He Must Shrug, that is the only title we feel worthy to address him by.

Dr. ██████: Why do you want to free SCP-4XXX-2?

D-3██: He is so tired, so sick from the burden. Humanity has put a terrible weight on this world, their collective sin and reckless expanse are too much to bear. He only seeks to wipe it away, so he might gain some slack to his shoulders and lessen the torture that tears his body. You perceive him as an unforgiving sentinel, but he can feel so much.

(D-3██ is seen to be weeping uncontrollably throughout the above.)

Dr. ██████: But if he is suffering so much, why was he made to endure this? What is this punishment for?

D-3██: He was there for us! He was in the beginning!

(D-3██ becomes highly agitated upon speaking, lunging aggressively at Dr. ██████. Security officers stationed outside quickly enter and terminate D-3██.)

<End Log>

Closing Statement: Upon review of D-3██ and previously affected subjects, I am referring this to my superiors and recommending a full suspension of tests until we gain further information about the intent of SCP-4XXX.
Dr. ██████
