Item: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedure: SCP-XXXX is kept inside standard anomalous object safety locker. The item is to be inspected biweekly for any signs of degradation or oxidation. Should any deterioration be detected, it is to be placed near a sleeping chamber of one of the D-Class personnel. The subject is afterwards exempt from monthly termination, until it expires from SCP-XXXXs anomalous properties. After the host has expired, the item is to be placed back into the storage locker until the next time the deterioration occurs.

Due to SCP-XXXXs anomalous attributes, all personnel are advised against sleeping within 150 meters of the object.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an ordinary metal chain, composed out of an unknown material, with currently 58 links, each link is about 3 cm long. All attempts to analyse or damage the object have been unsuccessful1. Beside its indestructible nature, the object displays no other anomalous properties while in its resting stage.

SCP-XXXX enters its active stage when it is within 100 m range of a sleeping human2. Once the nearest target has entered REM sleep, it becomes animate and begins to approach them3, usually choosing the way with least resistance. However should its path be blocked, it is capable of tearing through most materials, by striking against it with one of its end links4. As soon as it reaches it intended target, SCP-XXXX begins to coil around them, until all of its length is covering the subject's body. The process can be stopped, if the subject awakens before it starts to coil around them or if it is spotted by a woken human. Due to this, SCP-XXXX usually chains itself around its host in such a way that it doesn't wake them up, which results in partially limited mobility, instead of being unable to move completely.

At first the host is alarmed at the SCP-XXXXs presence and they immediately try to remove it5 After a while they stop their struggle and go about their daily lives, although slightly hindered by the objects weight and level of entanglement.

Upon successful capture of its prey, SCP-XXXX enters its feeding stage. Slowly, over the course of several months or even years, if the subject is properly fed and exercised, the object drains its hosts nutrients through their skin. At first the side effects are negligible, subjects only report slight dizziness and short-windedness from semi-strenuous work. With time however the effects become more and more noticeable. Subjects show signs of sleep deprivation, dehydration and malnutrition, which continue until the host expires. After the subject collapses, SCP-XXXX releases them and enters its resting stage once more, with an additional link.

If there is too long of a period between feedings, SCP-XXXX begins to rust and deteriorate.6

Recovery Log: On █/9/19██ a severely malnutritioned man (hereafter referred as Subject XXXX-1), wrapped in SCP-XXXX, arrived to █████████ Police Department, reporting that he had been kidnapped and kept locked up by Carl L███████, who put those chains on him. Several officers went to inspect Subjects claims, only to find L███████s residence engulfed in fire.

Foundation intervened once the SCP-XXXX indestructible nature was discovered, when they tried to remove it from Subject XXXX-1s body. All those involved were administered Class-A amnestics and Subject XXXX-1 was taken into Foundation custody where he was interviewed.

Subsequent search of L███████ estate, found several burnt documents and ██ bodies buried behind the house, several of them in advanced state of decay. Cause of death was malnutrition.

After a thorough background check, the Foundation discovered that Carl L███████ was a master blacksmith and a practitioner of alchemy. Due to the contents of the documents found and SCP-XXXX, Carl L███████ has become a PoI.

Document XXXX-12: The document was found inside a cabinet, along with other letters to his family members or friends.

Dear Lucy.7

It has been a while since I last wrote to you and while I want to say things are fine… they are not.

I have been caught in the middle of something disastrous monstrous big. I've been asked by a strange fellow to create something that could kill gods (his words not mine). At first I thought he was joking, but then he showed it to me. I can't even describe it, not because I don't want to, but because I just can't. It's indescribable.

It's been haunting my dreams ever since. The flashes of its image and the words the man told me on that day are echoing in my mind even now. He told me it slumbers, it has been doing so for years, centuries if not even millennia, and that it will awaken soon and bring about death.

At first I didn't know what to do and the man simply told me to just try. Before we parted he gave me a way to contact him and told me that I should only contact him once I found a way to stop it and only then. He also said not to speak to anyone about this, but I'm pretty sure no one would believe me.

Since then I've spent months trying to figure out something, but it was fruitless. Then one day it just came to me, if I can't kill it, I'll just chain it down.8

-and I know everyone will hate me for what I am doing, but a few lives is much better than what that thing will do if when it gets out.

This letter will probably never reach you, but I just want you to know that I love you and that no matter what it takes, I will stop it.

Yours beloved bro- truly

Carl L███████

Document XXXX-24: The following document are excerpts from Carls journal. (I. C. stand for indecipherable code)

June 20, 19██

Day 1

Me and my apprentice Tommy begun working on the chain. He is the only one I trust enough, to help me with this. He doesn't know what exactly it's for, but I told him he better not know and he believed me.

April 5, 19██

Day 289

We still can't figure out the proper formula to make the chain. I've already tried to (I. C.), but it doesn't work no matter how much I try. But I won't lose hope. I can't.

August 10, 19██

Day 782

I finally managed to stabilize the formula, by adding (I. C.), which prompted the expected and wanted result.

The first link is now ready, however at this rate it will take a lifetime to finish it.

I've read through some of the older texts and I think I found what I need.

I've sent Tommy home early today, since he has been very exhausted lately. I hope he can get a good rest so he can help me tomorrow.

August 11, 19██

I've just got the news that Tommy had died in his sleep. Poor kid, I'll miss him dearly. I hope I haven't driven him too hard.

November 17, 19██

I've done it!

I managed to program the link to seek out and consume the necessary materials, then to synthesize and form it into another link.

With this I just have to let it roam around and it will grow by itself. And once it is finished, I or someone of my kin just has to retreat it and deliver it to the man.

November 18, 19██

It disappeared. I locked it up last night and decided to let it out the following morning, but when I arrived to my shop it was gone.

The safe was torn open, but not from the outside, and the hole was too small to even fit a hand into it.

I fear for what happened to it.

November 19, 19██

Miss Jenkins, from next door, arrived to me this morning, wanting my opinion on a problem she had. I was more than willing to hear her out, although I doubted I could actually help.

But when she lifted her hair to show me the nape of her neck, I could feel the cold sweat dripping from every part of my body.

There it was. The link. It stuck itself onto her neck and was just sitting there.

Miss told me that they tried to remove it, but it didn't help, no matter how much they tried. I wanted to help, I did, but I knew there was nothing I could do, so I simply greeted her off and began to observe her from that day on.

November 25, 19██

Miss Jenkins died. I saw it happen in front of my store. She just simply collapsed and died. I was the first to be by her body. I quickly took the link off of her and put it my pocket unnoticed.

They said she died from overwork.

November 26, 19██

I was woken to the sound of my doors creaking open. When I got up I saw there was no one there. Just as I was about to go back to bed, my foot struck against something small and I saw it.

The link.

I brought it home yesterday to further study it, but nothing unusual from what I already knew. But right here and now, I realized. I created a monster.

December 1, 19██

After thorough research I discovered that the link does as it was intended. It searches for materials and then grows. But what I hadn't noticed nor expected that in my formula for it there was another factor.

A soul.

In order for a link to be indestructible it requires, besides the materials, a soul. And that goes for each individual link.

Oh Tommy I am so sorry.

But I try to look at this from a brighter side. This unwanted sideffect, might also be a small blessing. The chain would, beside preventing it from moving, also drain its energy, which by what the man told me should be limitless.

The only thing left now is, to decide if I want to go through with this.

I've already made my choice.

Everyone please forgive me.

Addendum XXXX-1: Dr. ████████ proposed to see what would happen, if SCP-XXXX wasn't fed even after deterioration began. The test was approved.

Over the course of 72 hours after initial deterioration began, one of the links broke off severing 4 other links with it. The object was immediately transferred to a D-Class cell, which was prepared beforehand, where it successfully entered its active stage, although it took longer to fully constrict its host.

The severed links were collected and analyzed. The results showed it to be an ordinary steel chain.
