SCP-VR, unactivated

Item #: SCP-VR

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-VR is to be contained at Site-19, in a standard Safe object containment locker. As further testing with SCP-VR is suspended at this time, access to the object is currently limited to Level 4 and above clearance.

Description: SCP-VR initially appears to be a standard HTC Vive™ virtual reality headset, with the exception of a serial number.

SCP-VR’s anomalous properties only manifest when equipped by a user. These effects will henceforth be referred to as SCP-VR-A, and in their first stage include:

  • Extreme euphoria
  • Increased presence of serotonin and dopamine in user’s body
  • Uncontrollable muscle contractions
  • Smiling
  • In 95% of cases, uncontrollable laughter
  • In 20% of cases, production of tears
  • In ██% of cases, spontaneous orgasm

SCP-VR-A are emotional responses to audiovisual media (henceforth referred to as SCP-VR-B) generated by SCP-VR’s attached display and headphones when equipped. SCP-VR does not need a power source to generate SCP-VR-B. Additionally, when attempting to interface SCP-VR with standard HTC Vive™ equipment, SCP-VR will simply remain undetected by internal software.

The full contents of an instance of SCP-VR-B have never been successfully described, although audio and video output have been described in separate instances- users exposed to the full effect of SCP-VR-A are either too mentally preoccupied or physically incapable of describing their experience. SCP-VR-B has never been activated more than once per user.

Audio-only and video-only testing, as well as variation of duration of SCP-VR-B (minimum recorded time of █ seconds to maximum of ██ days, █ hours, ██ minutes, and ██ seconds) indicate that the contents of each instance of SCP-VR-B are unique to each user. The contents of SCP-VR-B can only be observed by the present user, and cannot be heard/seen by other people or observing equipment.

When SCP-VR-B concludes, the first stage of SCP-VR-A concludes with it. At this point, the user’s emotional responses switch drastically. The second stage of SCP-VR-A includes:

  • Symptoms of major depressive disorder
  • Uncontrollable crying/sobbing
  • Near-uncontrollable compulsion to suicide
  • In ██% of cases, stress-induced cardiomyopathy

██% of users exposed to the full effects of SCP-VR-B have committed suicide.

Testing Log: The following log records observations on the exposure of SCP-VR-B to human beings.

Test #0█
Subject: D-1298b, 34M
Special Conditions: N/A
Duration of SCP-VR-B: ██ minutes, ██ seconds.
Results: No atypical responses recorded. D-1298b commits suicide one minute after SCP-VR-B concludes by jumping and landing on head, severing spinal connection.

Test #0█
Subject: D-913q, 21M
Special Conditions: A Beretta M9 pistol and kitchen knife are laid out on a table in the observation chamber.
Duration of SCP-VR-B: ██ hours, ██ minutes, ██ seconds.
Results: No atypical responses recorded. D-913q commits suicide four seconds after SCP-VR-B concludes by gunshot wound.

Test #06
Subject: D-863h, 49M
Special Conditions: Subject is blind.
Duration of SCP-VR-B: ██ minutes.
Results: SCP-VR-A manifests at a drastically reduced potency in D-863h. D-863h is affected and is unable to stop himself from laughing during SCP-VR-B, but is able to make out a description.

Test #06 - Audio Excerpt:

Researcher Aureus: D-863? D-863, can you hear me?

D-863h(laughing uncontrollably): G-give me a second, doc, let me-BAHAHA! Let me catch my breath-

Researcher Aureus: D-863, you’re not going to be able to catch your breath. Just try to describe what you’re hearing.

D-863h(through laughter): Okay-ahaha! Okay, doc. I hear, uh-gunfire. Like from a machine gun! And screaming! Like some insane FUCK’s been let loose in the streets! Wait… I can hear him laughing too!

D-863h bursts out into another fit of laughter, unable to continue speaking for the rest of the duration of SCP-VR-B.

Note: D-863h is a diagnosed sadist and convicted mass murderer. - Researcher Aureus

Test #06 - Post-Test Interview Excerpt:

Researcher Aureus: Then how are you feeling now?

D-863h: Pretty shit, actually. Like… you ever tuned into your favorite TV show every week, for years, and it just ends and you feel all empty inside? Kinda like that, but… worse, somehow. That was the best thing I’ve ever listened to.

Researcher Aureus: Have you experienced any suicidal thoughts since the experiment concluded?

D-863h(pauses): What the fuck? Am I supposed to? You guys are sick. But… no, I don’t feel that way right now.

Researcher Aureus: “Right now?”
D-863h: I don’t know why I said that.

I’m hypothesizing what D-863h heard from SCP-VR-B was unique to his enjoyment, given his prior history. Let’s try a more typical subject. - Researcher Luna

Test #07
Subject: Researcher Luna, 23F
Special Conditions: Subject is to be blindfolded and administered Class-B amnestics immediately after data collection.
Duration of SCP-VR-B: ██ hours, ██ minutes, ██ seconds.
Results: SCP-VR-A manifests at a drastically reduced potency. Subject (through laughter) describes hearing “a cute voice yelling through a curtain of honey” and “smooth jazz if the instruments were celestial bodies.” After SCP-VR-B concludes, subject describes “sympathizing with D-863h.” After data was logged, Researcher Luna was administered amnestics and restored to her original state.

I’m requesting that a full psychiatric evaluation be administered to Researcher Luna. I turn my back for two seconds to advise on a containment breach, and now I’ve got a week’s worth of paperwork to fill out because she risked her life, not wanting to “wait around for our civilian subject request form to be approved.” "Typical" my ███. - Researcher Aureus

Tests #08 through #██ were performed with blind civilian subjects. Amnestics were administered after testing. Descriptions of SCP-VR-B’s audio component ranged from “the song that played at my high school prom” to “the sound of wet bones being thrown into a blender.”

Test #██
Subject: C-93a, 16F
Special Conditions: Subject is deaf.
Duration of SCP-VR-B: ██ seconds.
Results: SCP-VR-A manifests at a similar level to blind testing average.

Test #██ - Post-Test Interview Excerpt:

An ASL interpreter was provided for this interview.

Researcher Luna: …A traditional Japanese garden.

C-93a: Yes. I’ve always wanted to visit Japan. But this garden was beautiful beyond belief. The display in that headset is like magic. The colors were so vibrant, and the way the trees moved was mesmerizing. I felt like I could… see better in there than in reality.

Researcher Luna: Are you visually impaired?

C-93a: No, which makes it all the more amazing. The crystal clear river, the pink cherry blossoms- can I try it again?

Researcher Luna: I’m afraid not. It’s one time use only.

C-93a: What? Please, I’m desperate. I’ll feel awful if I never get to experience that again. Please.

Researcher Luna(turning around to speak to staff): I think we should conclude here.

C-93a(in tears): What did she say?

Tests ██ through 2█ were performed with deaf civilian subjects. Amnestics were administered after testing. Descriptions of SCP-VR-B’s video component included “a buffet with all of my favorite foods” and “sex with a ████████.”

Test #2█
Subject: C-171b, 42F
Special Conditions: Subject is deaf and blind.
Duration of SCP-VR-B: Unknown. SCP-VR was removed after 2 hours.
Results: SCP-VR-A did not manifest in subject. Subject expressed boredom through experiment duration.

What did you guys expect? - Researcher Luna
