If gone without food for too long. Or gets of an age

Minor seismic activity

Thick roots force through rock

Roots will later branch out and up infecting plants it touches

Plants will secrete XXXX-1

Moving:
If XXXX-1 is eaten from a root

Current plant will die

Spore-like object will travel down root

New plant will grow where animal ate XXXX-1

Other plants attached to root will be leached

Uh oh:
Scientists intercept spore

Taken for storage at secure site

BREACH!!
