Sighting of SCP-XXXX taken by a backpacker in the ████ ████ Wilderness area.
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: Due to the location and elusive nature of SCP-XXXX it can not be completely contained and procedures must be carefully implemented by Foundation personnel embedded in the US Forest Service located in ███████ National Forest, specifically responsible for the ████ ████ Wilderness area of the ██████-██████ mountain range located in the state of ██████████.
Personnel shall be posted at several Visitor Centers servicing the area as Rangers to issue Wilderness Permits to visiting public in order to monitor the number of visitors accessing this area of the mountains. Foundation Personnel shall also ensure clear and legible signs are hung at various points along trails instructing visitors and backpackers not to litter or or otherwise disturb the natural scenery. Additional signage shall be posted warning visitors of high bear activity.
These measures shall be augmented by armed Foundation Personnel patrolling trails as Rangers working for the US Forest Service to ensure the compliance of visitors to the ████ ████ Wilderness area and to also clean the area of any and all litter they find along their route. Personnel patrolling in the ████ ████ Wilderness area will be issued one (1) horse to facilitate movement and expand carrying capacity for any litter being removed from the forest as motorized vehicles appear to antagonize SCP-XXXX. Additional stock will be issued on a case-by-case basis.
Any events involving SCP-XXXX shall be reported to the Foundation. Events involving SCP-XXXX that result in the death(s) of visiting public require the deployment of Mobile Task Force Eplison-6 ("Village Idiots") and shall be reported to local authorities as an animal attack. Any survivors of such an attack will be detained and interviewed before being administered a mild amnesiatic and convinced they are survivors of a bear attack before being released.
Description: SCP-XXXX appears to be a semi-sentient animal of an as yet currently unknown genus residing in high elevation areas of the ██████-██████ mountain range, particularly the ████ ████ Wilderness area. Reports from assigned Foundation personnel and sporadic sightings by the public describe a large shaggy mammal reminiscent of an abnormally large black bear or dog, though reports do not agree to one or the other. Common descriptions include long claws on each of its four paws and a snout with exposed teeth. The fur growing on SCP-XXXX is said to be a dark brown color of medium length and hanging from loose, almost baggy, skin with the exception of its two front legs which appear to be hairless up to the elbow. This seems to serve as camouflage in the thick foliage as well as protecting SCP-XXXX from the elements. The prints left by SCP-XXXX are similar to that of bear tracks, but with some notable differences.
SCP-XXXX is rarely sighted outside of an incident and generally seems uninterested in other animals or humans except while hunting or when provoked. While SCP-XXXX is observed to be docile when observed in normal conditions in the wild, it becomes violent when witnessing the violating of its environment (i.e. someone leaving trash, intentionally damaging plants or killing animals). Upon witnessing such an action SCP-XXXX flies into a violent rage and proceeds to brutally kill the offending person, often impaling their disemboweled body on a low tree branch. SCP-XXXX has also been observed to "walk" on two legs, but will lower to all four in order to enable faster movement. Although SCP-XXXX has been seen to travel on just its two hind legs, to call it humanoid would be inaccurate.
All attempts to capture SCP-XXXX have resulted in failure. SCP-XXXX seems to be immune to most tranquilizers and when shot with a conventional rifle was seen to produce a blood trail, though no body was ever found and the agent who took the shot was subsequently found impaled through the chest on a tree branch days later after chasing what was sighted to be SCP-XXXX into a thicket. The corpse was also noticeably bisected just above the pelvis with the agent's lower half found approximately thirty meters away. Attempts at trapping SCP-XXXX have met with similar results as it appears to be aware of their function and purpose.
How SCP-XXXX attains sustenance is unknown as it does not appear to consume its kills with most of the postmortem damage to found corpses being inflicted by scavengers, but it is speculated that SCP-XXXX derives nourishment from normal hunting behaviors commonly found in local black bears.
First sightings of SCP-XXXX can be dated back to the ███████████ Gold Rush and are supported by oral history from the █████ tribe which inhabited the area before the arrival of settlers. These records were further authenticated by early Foundation operative J███ ████ during his explorations of the area in the year ████. Mr. ████ was also instrumental in developing early policies to protect visitors to the area after witnessing one of his own men mauled to death after discarding the wrappings of a package onto the forest floor. Further information on SCP-XXXX can be found in the included incident reports.
