Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: All SCP-XXXX objects are to be sealed inside a 30 x 24 x 6, 4-digit locked case, located in a security locker room under video surveillance at all times. Unless further testing is required, no individuals are permitted to view, or otherwise read, any SCP-XXXX items.

Because of past incidents, any and all staff who retrieve the locked case containing SCP-XXXX for testing must be escorted by security units as to prevent any attempts of personal or shared usage, and theft.

Any and all personnel who do not follow these regulations will be checked for any of SCP-XXXX's effects and severely reprimanded if used without testing guidelines.

Description: SCP-XXXX, SCP-XXXX-1, and SCP-XXXX-2 are three near-identical, hard-cover novels approximately ████ pages in length. The objects were first discovered at █████ ████ public library after news report incidents caught the attention of the Foundation on March █, 19██.

When one (1) person observes and/or reads any word on the object, whether it be the title, author, or the actual story itself, the user is immediately drawn into reading the rest of the novel with no breaks. What anomalous effect causes this to influence somebody is currently unknown (henceforth designated SCP-XXXX-A). Though, they may still be slightly distracted by any outside disturbance. Said person never speaks, instead reading to themselves in thought. Although this may prove slightly unhealthy due to hunger or lack of rest, it is not necessarily considered harmful.

When two (2) or three (3) persons start reading the SCP-XXXX objects, anybody present near the first influenced reader are drawn towards them. Should more than three people be present, SCP-XXXX novels may be shared among themselves. One person of the group reads at a time out loud, while all others read along in silence, alternating every two or three paragraphs. If a listener, for any reason, loses track on where the speaker is reading SCP-XXXX, they will suddenly start suffocating by SCP-XXXX-A until death.

If death occurs, the speaker will suddenly stop reading SCP-XXXX, uttering a phrase to scold any deceased persons, then casually resume reading. Other quiet individuals who weren’t reading out loud seem to be unaware of these events. Testing shows death may be prevented when the suffocating subject relocates where the speaker's current reading spot is of SCP-XXXX.

Addendum: After several tests with SCP-XXXX, Class-D tested who later on were permitted to read other regular books, magazines, etc. with someone else reportedly start to suffocate by SCP-XXXX-A once distracted. Showing that SCP-XXXX's effects continue to influence previous test subjects. Therefore, any and all persons who have viewed any SCP-XXXX instances are to either be kept in medical care or have any reading permissions revoked.
