Special Containment Procedures: One manifestation of SCP-XX-1 is currently in containment in room 241 at Site-191, designated SCP-XX-1-A. SCP-XX-1-A is always to be monitored via one-way mirror by no fewer than three level 2 or higher personnel. These personnel are on an eight-hour shift and are to watch SCP-XX-1-A constantly while on shift or during testing. In the event of attempted escape by SCP-XX-1-A, guards are to be dispatched immediately to subdue it via nonlethal force.
Description: SCP-XX is phenomenon occurring globally. Its origins are currently unknown.
The phenomenon only occurs in localized areas under the following conditions:
-A lone child of ages 1 month to 9 years is in a bedroom.
-It is currently night.1
-The child is awake.2
If all the above criteria are met, there is a chance3 that SCP-XX will trigger. Upon the anomaly triggering, an entity will manifest within the child's room, or just outside the door to the room. The entity is hereafter referred to as SCP-XX-1.
SCP-XX-1 is an exact replication of one parent of the crying child. It has a heavy tendency to take the form of the mother, though it will take the form of the father or guardian if a mother is not available. SCP-XX-1 will then attempt to assuage the crying child into a state of calmness. Methods of assuaging include rocking the child in their arms, soothing them verbally, and fetching glasses of milk or water for the child. In all recorded instances, if SCP-XX-1 is not disturbed during this process, there is a 94.1% probability that the child will fall asleep within 10 minutes of SCP-XX-1 first arriving, and a 100% probability that the child will fall asleep within 30 minutes of SCP-XX-1 first arriving. After the child has fallen asleep, the entity will exit via the doorway it entered if still available, close it, and then de-manifest.4
If SCP-XX-1 is interrupted during this process by a person who is not the child's parent entering the room, SCP-XX-1 will attempt to quiet them so that the child is not woken. If the intruder deliberately attempts to keep the child awake, the entity will escort them out of the room, gently at first, then forcefully if necessary. It will then close the door, which will not open again until SCP-XX-1 demanifests.
If the child has no parents or immediate guardians, SCP-XX-1 will take a seemingly random form, which the child will regard as their parent/guardian, no matter the form.5
SCP-XX-1 cannot manifest/demanifest if it is currently being witnessed by a sentient human being. If possible, SCP-XX-1 will exit through the door or other opening in the room such as window or hole to escape detection. If detained via human detection for at least 30 minutes, SCP-XX-1 will attempt to demanifest when the subject blinks or otherwise loses visual contact of SCP-XX-1, no matter the period out of sight. However, vision of the entity can be maintained via camera or other visual monitoring equipment.
On XX-XX-2015, The following 911 call was recorded from the home of one Mary █████ in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Dispatcher: 911, what is your emergency?
Mary: (whispering) Hi, I have an, um, intruder in my house.
Dispatcher: What is your address?
Mary: [LOCATION EXPUNGED]
Dispatcher: (brief pause) Police have been dispatched to your location. Can you describe your attacker for me?
Mary: “It’s… me.”
Dispatcher: (pause) Come again?
Mary: It’s… I have a nanny-cam6 in my child’s room, and I can see the intruder… it’s… it looks exactly like me. I don’t know… I…
Dispatcher: Ma’am, if this is a prank, this is a possible felony-
Mary: I’M NOT – It’s… it’s some sort of clone, I… oh… god, no! (loud clatter, faint sound of footsteps running.)
Dispatcher: Ma’am, please stay on the line… Ma’am?
[REMAINDER OF CALL EXPUNGED]
When Police arrived four minutes later, they knocked on the door, only for Miss █████ to open it immediately. Police searched the house, but found nobody other than the child. They then questioned Miss █████ about the intruder, but she claimed she did not remember sending the call or any intruder. By this point, Foundation personnel in nearby Site-341 had intercepted the call, and operatives were dispatched. Miss █████ was taken into foundation custody, and the officers recieved cover story 17 (mental imbalance).
Subsequent interrogation of Miss █████ revealed that she truly did not remember any of the previously described events; however, footage recovered from the Nanny-cam did show a figure identical to Miss █████, as well as [DATA EXPUNGED]. Standard medical examination also revealed a .5 mm wide hole in the back of Miss █████’s skull, similar to [DATA EXPUNGED] and with traces of [DATA EXPUNGED]. The subject was returned after six hours of analysis, and was kept under low-level surveillance for 2 months afterwards. She displayed no lasting anomalous effects.
Subsequent investigation revealed a number of similar events/injuries spread across large areas, the earliest of which occurring in 20██. After several months of investigation into the phenomenon, it was classified as SCP-XX.
On XX-XX-2016, test #41025 was initiated at site 191 to contain at least one specimen of SCP-XX-1. Thirty infant humans ranging from ages 3 months to 1 year were obtained via [REDACTED] and placed in adjacent rooms. Subjects were provided with adequate sustenance daily and provided with a sufficiently furnished crib. After XX days of monitoring, an instance of SCP-XX-1 manifested next to infant #14, which was agitated at the time. It attempted to comfort the child, and was subsequently contained by guards and kept under heavy monitoring. Due to constant watch from multiple sources, SCP-XX-1 was unable to demanifest, and was detained and re-designated SCP-XX-1-A. The following is the first conducted interview with SCP-XX-1-A.
Interviewer: "Hello."
SCP-XX-1-A: "What… what's going on? Where' s my child?"
Interviewer: "That is not your child. What do you-"
SCP-XX-1-A: "Stop it! Where is my child! Let me see him! He's in pain!"
Interviewer: "Please, calm down. Is there anything-"
SCP-XX-1-A: "Fuck you! (Note: subject is heavily agitated, screaming at this point.) Where is my child? What did you do with my child?!"

Note: SCP-XX-1-A continued constantly requesting Infant #14 for 7 minutes and 43 seconds, before adapting a calmer tone, reassuring the child even though it wasn't there. It should be noted that at almost the exact time SCP-XX-1-A began "comforting" the child, Infant #14 immediately stopped crying and fell asleep soon after. SCP-XX-1-A then stopped talking and refused to answer any more questions.
Closing Statement: "Subsequent research has revealed that the SCP-XX phenomenon has continued occurring globally, despite SCP-XX-1-A being in containment. This goes to show two important things - that SCP-XX is not a single individual teleporting to children's rooms at night, and that SCP-XX-1-A is just one instance of a potentially infinite number of variables."
Addendum SCP-XX-Beta (LEVEL 4 OR HIGHER CLEARANCE REQUIRED): (Link) on XX-XX-2017, SCP-XX-1-A began speaking during a routine interview attempt. The following records relevant data of the interaction between the entity and the interviewer, Senior Researcher J████ M██████.

Interviewer: "Interview attempt #57 is a failure. End-"
SCP-XX-1-A: "Where are your parents?"
Interviewer: "…I… They're at home."
SCP-XX-1-A: "Where is your home?"
Interviewer: (brief pause) "What is-"
SCP-XX-1-A: "You haven't called them in a while, have you?"
Interviewer: "I don't think that's relevant."
SCP-XX-1-A: "That's very rude, you know. They raised you for years, and this is how you repay them?"
Interviewer: "I-"
SCP-XX-1-A: "After all those toys they got you for Christmas… after all the meals they fed you, all the times they washed your clothes, yet you haven't even tried to speak to them in at least a decade. For shame, J████. For shame."
Interviewer: "How do you-"
SCP-XX-1-A: "Quiet!" (stands up) "Young man, I am very disappointed in you. Now you're going to give me the key to this room, and you're going to march right on out and call your parents immediately, do you understand?"
Interviewer: "…yes, mother."
(Interviewer M██████ proceeds to give XX-1-A the keycard to the room. The entity then unlocks the door and attempts to exit but is quickly subdued and recontained by the three guards stationed just outside the room.)

Closing Note: "Interviewer M██████ was kept under quarantine for two weeks after the interview, as is standard for researchers with possible memetic instabilities. Upon being deemed safe, he immediately went to his quarters and called his parents, speaking with them for over an hour before ending the call. No foundation information was divulged in the call, and three days later, M██████ resumed work as normal. Testing with SCP-XX-1-A has been suspended indefinitely."
If there’s one thing one can say about our dear SCP site, it’s this: “Holy SHIT that’s a lot of SCPs.” Like, no joke, we’re at series 5 now. FIVE. I remember when series 2 was a big thing. Now we’re just casually at 5, and we haven’t even 100%-ed series 4 yet.
With that said, who here has read every SCP on the site? Raise your hand if you have. Now put it down, because you’re lying. I don’t think anybody has read every single SCP the entire way through – particularly because half of them have been changed since then.
Now, we all know the big ones – 137, 96, 49, 106, 682, and all those others from the first series who got their own game out of it. There are even some newer ones which have become fan favorites, such as the multiverse strip club and dotdot-dotdotdotdotdot-dotdot-dot. ((whispers) it’s 2521.) However, there’s a LOT of other skips in between the fan favorites, some of which more well known, and others which haven’t been touched since their approval. As a result, it can be incredibly intimidating for people new to the site to start reading – I mean, would YOU want to read a 4000-chapter novel?
Even harder is distinguishing the good SCPs from the bad SCPs – yeah, there are quality ones, but then you have weak ones like those gamers against weed meme-shitposts, and the blind gentleman, and the boogeyman. They’re not necessarily bad – but they often aren’t exactly memorable either.
With that said, I’m going to try something crazy – sort out a few more quality SCPs from the bunch. I’m going to try and focus on the 2000s and up, because those are the newer-age ones, which don’t get as much attention as the classic series. I’ll include the SCP, a description of it as to why I think it’s so great, and a difficulty rating – 1 means it’s easy for anyone to read into it, while 5 means it makes that 4000-chapter novel look like a children’s book. I’ll also organize them by difficulty, so those who want to skip to more engaging SCPs can skip down a bit.
A few disclaimers – just because your favorite SCP isn’t on here doesn’t mean it’s a bad SCP. On the contrary – It may well be the best of them all, and I just haven’t seen it yet! Or it could be that it just didn’t interest me – in which case, I’m glad you were able to enjoy it and see something which I didn’t! Also, as you can tell by the empty bar next to my profile picture, I’m not exactly a top contributor here at the foundation, so take this list with a good handful of salt.
SCP-2800 (Cactusman)
Difficulty Level: 1
It’s very rare to find an SCP with a happy ending. Indeed, many of them end with lukewarm endings, at best. Cactusman is that rare SCP which actually does have a happy ending. It’s just a guy who wants to be a hero, however small, and I really do enjoy reading this one.
SCP-3982 (A Very Heavy Metal Bedtime)
Difficulty Level: 1
Not every SCP needs to involve extradimensional anomalies, massive containment procedures, or experiment logs long enough to be their own piece. Sometimes, the best SCPs are the simplest ones. This one, for example, is short, sweet, and has a twist. It’s simple, yet heartwarming, with an interesting ending. Plus, it features Lordi! What more could you want?
SCP-4131 (Gunhead Anomalocaris, Trilobite Slayer!)
Difficulty level: 2
I’ve always persisted that the name is arguably the most important part of an SCP. If the name doesn’t interest me, be it too generic or too silly, there’s a much smaller chance I’ll click on it. That said, with a name like “Gunhead Anomalocaris, Trilobite Slayer!”, how could I NOT click on it? The SCP is relatively simple, but at the same time, charming. I always like sapient-animal SCPs, such as SCP-1867 and this one. It’s like a puppy, with bio-weapons on it and a great hate towards trilobites. Give this one a read when you’re in town.
SCP-3922 (STOPRIGHTTHERECRIMINALSCUM)
Difficulty level: 2
Admit it, we all clicked on this one for the oblivion reference. Once in, though, this skip is actually really interesting in its ramifications. I do enjoy extensive test logs and this one has that in spades, and it’s truly interesting to see how this and various other shows interact. Plus it’s freaking hilarious.
SCP-1459 (The Puppy Machine)
Difficulty Level: 2
This one’s an exception to the 2000s and up rule, but with good reason – I feel that this particular SCP emphasizes the cruelty of the foundation better than any other could. I mean, for 343’s sake, almost this entire document – as well as the entire testing log – is literally just a massive list of varying ways to kill puppies. Like, no joke. That’s the whole thing. Killing puppies in increasingly adorably horrible ways. This is just what the foundation does – no mercy, no remorse. Pure efficiency. That said, the log does go on for quite a while, but it’s still entertaining.
SCP-3908 (SCP-3908)
Difficulty level: 3
No, that’s not a typo. You’ll see for yourself. Anyways, one of the hardest concepts for newcomers – and indeed, writers on the site in general – to grasp is that of memes and antimemes. Hell, I can hardly make it through most memetic-related articles due to the headache I always develop reading them. This is one of the simplest ones on the site, and it’s still a bit of a mind twister. Still, though, it demonstrates the basics of what makes a meme/antimeme, and as such, I feel it should be read, to at least give the reader the general idea of what a meme/antimeme is, and how dangerous it potentially it could be. If you still don't get it, see SCP-055. It's an early SCP, but may well be the origin of the whole meme and anti-meme concept on the site.
SCP-3043 and SCP-3143 (Murphy’s Law series)
Difficulty Level: 3 and 4 respectively
These are some of my favorite SCPs on the site. They’re just an incredible display of what one can do with the format given to them if they have enough skill. Neither of these really portrays an SCP – rather, they tell stories. Like, literally, tell stories. I won’t spoil too much, but they’re campy, gimmicky rides which you have to read to believe. They can be a bit hard to manage when you’re used to the standard SCP format, but stick around – they might just surprise you.

Difficulty level: 4
SCP-2201 (Well, it was low entropy while it lasted…)
Difficulty Level: 5
Another example of the incredible potential of the site’s format, SCP-2201 is an extremely strange but enjoyable ride, going through varying types of documents in a story which must be pieced together to be understood. This is easily one of the more strangely ordered SCPs on the site, but I do feel like it’s worth checking out, if for nothing other than the cool ending visual.
SCP-2212 (Massive database corruption)
Difficulty level: 5
This is not an SCP. This is an ADVENTURE. A journey of proportions unlike any other! All grandeur aside, this is a diabolically clever way to make your readers work for their SCP, instead of just saying it. Yes, it’s difficult, and to be honest I can barely make heads or tails of it, but just the concept alone – a SCP hidden amongst the whispers and confusion – is absolutely divine. Try it for yourself – it is possible! Just really, REALLY hard.
Go all over the SCP wiki, and no matter who you ask about the origins of one thing or the ramifications of another, they will repeat to you the same thing – there is no canon. More specifically, there is no one specific canon. Yeah, there are canon hubs, which collect stories in a specific canon, but they pretty much never relate to one another, and may as well be in literal alternate universes. In other words, there is no canon.
But I am here to step on that trope, and tell you that there IS, in fact, canon. Yeah, only a handful of it, but still, canon. BEHOLD! The only things which remain constant in SCPs! Mostly! Sort of! …yeah, I’m kinda winging it, and most of these can be told by anything with eyes, but you can’t deny, these are relatively common themes throughout the foundation.
-The foundation exists, and tries to contain anomalies which are designated “SCPs”.
-The foundation are very bad at their job, with the SCPs constantly escaping.
-D-class people are the poor saps who are used in SCP tests.
-Researchers are the people who send D-class into SCP tests.
-SCPs are designated into several levels of containment difficulty – Safe, Euclid and Keter (and sometimes Thaumiel).
-Dr. Bright is a possibly immortal, possibly insane researcher who may or may not be a monkey at the moment.
-Dr. Clef is a badass, as well as a jackass. (no offense Clef)
-SCP-173 and SCP-682 exist.
-The term “XK-class scenario” is another way of saying “We’re fucked and buggered if this happens”.
-The Global Occult Coalition is like the SCP foundation, but instead of capturing anomalies, they destroy them. They are also generally dicks.
…and that’s about it. I know, it’s an incredibly short and basic canon, but it is a canon. Mostly. I think.
A fool's tale
Once upon a time, there was a little boy who stumbled across a magical land. This land held all sorts of wondrous creatures and kind people. Furthermore, the wise ones of this land were artists - capable of painting unfathomably vivid landscapes, the likes of which the boy could not hope to match. Nevertheless, the boy went forward to play with with these artists, but he did not realize something very important - these elders were very serious about their craft, and only the most elite of artists could ever hope to compete.
When the child offered up his first drawing, for example, the elders shook their heads and politely told him how he could improve. However, the young boy had a massive flaw - he did not understand the concept of criticism. Where others only wanted to help him, he only saw mocking and laughing. Enraged, he lashed out, being rude and generally spitting on Will Wheaton's law. The elders sighed - they had seen far too many children like him before - and banished the child, never to return.
Five long years passed.
A man came to the valley. He recognized everyone there, and recalled a brief period of his life where he'd learned about the valley. It had been long since then, and the man had grown quite a deal wiser. And so, the man once more entered the valley, wondering if he was now ready to accept their criticism, and become a great artist himself.

All SCP-XXXX instances should be kept in a High Priority-Standard Humanoid Containment Cell within Armed Humanoid-Containment Area-28, with basic amenities for human sustenance; additional requests may be granted, as long it doesn't violate regulations and protocols. Subjects were implanted with a micro-tracking and audio-recording device, and should never be removed.
They are to be consulted by on-site therapists thrice a week, to ensure their psychological and social well-being. Close-contact personnels must at least have a Psychic Resistance Scale score of 17 or higher. MTF Alpha-9 ("Last Hope") is to assist with the training, containment; and supervision of all SCP-XXXX instances, especially during field operations.
SCP-XXXX instances should only be allowed outside, during tests, training exercises, and field operations. Testings should be done by Level 3 researchers, with two (2) Level 4 senior researchers' authorization.
During a 'premonition' episode of an SCP-XXXX instance, all information that would be spoken by the subject shall be logged and recorded for future research.

Assigned personnels should monitor reports and sightings regarding the defected SCP-XXXX instances, with the assistance of Foundation web crawler Tau-10 ("MINDBOMBADIER"). Such reports should be immediately apprehended and investigated, and involved individuals should be amnesticised.
Classified information leaked by SCP-XXXX instances, should immediately be destroyed/deleted, and cover stories regarding it as a hoax or ARG (Alternate-Reality Game) should be made afterwards.
Confirmed real reports regarding the location of SCP-XXXX instances should be immediately taken care of. All available units near to the location should be dispatched to retrieve the SCP-XXXX instance. Personnels are advised with all their efforts to not terminate the subject, but instead render it unconscious or incapacitated.
If ever personnels did manage to apprehend a subject; it should be put in a state of controlled-coma, and administered to Class-C and Class-F amnestics7, before waking it up. The same procedures have already been applied to SCP-XXXX instances, who are still voluntarily in Foundation custody, to prevent further defections.8
The current whereabouts of the defected SCP-XXXX instances are unknown, and all previous attempts to recontain them have resulted in failure. Fortunately, they are still no recorded casualties yet, with only cases of operatives and civilian bystanders being injured.9
