The cathedral SCP-XXXX was recovered from.

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: Due to concerns that even small amounts of movement or vibrations could lead to affect the contents of SCP-XXXX a site is being maintained around the location it was discovered in. SCP-XXXX is not to be moved from the table it was found on and any movements or vibrations near the object must be kept to an absolute minimal. The foundation is currently looking into the practicality of attempting to move the object or improve the table it is on in an attempt to prevent minimal vibrations passing to SCP-XXXX.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an hourglass six inches tall, made of glass and gold. It corresponds to the design of hourglasses from the 8th century, but no makers marks are present . It is unknown what period of time SCP-XXXX measures. The object is currently fallen on its side, leaning on a book titled: Speculum Horas Tractatori written by a Luitprand Abednego. As a result, the objects inside (hereby referred to as SCP-XXXX-a) are not moving between the two parts of the hourglass. Foundation researchers have been unable to find any references or other copies of this book or any references to the author.

SCP-XXXX was discovered in aderelict cathedral in ██████, France, after local police entered the cathedral to clear out squatters and encountered huge resistance resulting in the deaths of all of the squatters and all but one member of the police force. The squatters were protecting a heavily reinforced door with the text: [DATA EXPUNGED]. One officer saw the text on the door and then attempted to attack his partner in an attempt to stop her from entering the room, however she fought him off and he ultimately died. After discovering this from an interview with the surviving officer, Foundation officers breached the room and discovered more cognito hazards on the wall of the room. The room was empty other than a table in the centre of the room with the object, on its side, on a table in the centre of the room.

When inspected under a high power microscope, it was discovered that instances of SCP-XXXX-a within the object are curled up, naked humans. Those in the top half of the hourglass can be seen to be respiring with their eyes closed, however they do not react to any stimuli attempted. Those in the bottom of the hourglass do not respire and appear pallid. All of the squatters killed in the cathedral SCP-XXXX was recovered in can be seen in the top half of the hourglass, some with wounds approximating those received in the fight with the local police force, others blackened and heavily burned. They all still appear to be respiring. Foundation staff recovered several of the squatters bodies, but many had already been cremated. Nothing anomalous was discovered about the recovered bodies.

Other instances of SCP-XXXX-a have been identified and it is believed that all instances correspond to real humans, both living and deceased. There are many instances of SCP-XXXX-a that correspond to living humans in the bottom half of the object and several deceased humans corresponding to instances in the top half of the object. It does not appear that a humans state is representative of their corresponding instances position in either the top or bottom half of SCP-XXXX, Leading to foundation researchers to believe that the object is not yet activated. It is estimated that ████████ instances of SCP-XXXX-a are contained within the hour glass, with a roughly equal distribution between the top and bottom half.

Addendum: Foundation researchers are confident that the book SCP-XXXX is leaning on contains a guide on how to use the object and are also keen to turn over SCP-999 due their belief the object is not yet active. However all research has been halted on SCP-999 by the 05 council due to an instance of SCP-XXXX-a resembling a 05 council member being present in the top half of SCP-999.
