A rendition of SCP-XXXX's cover page

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Threat Level:

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a small lock-box secured by a numerical combination located at site 43. Access to the combination is only to be granted by Dr. █████, and should be changed by Dr. █████, after every use by a personnel other than himself.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a paperback copy of the book "The Prince" by Niccolo Machiavelli. It has no copyright date or publisher information and appears to be rather new - although some instances of SCP-XXXX will claim to be quite old. All the pages have been left blank, save for the first page, which contains a handwritten inscription that reads "For you, my prince, the kingdom." Attempts to locate the author of said inscription have been unsuccessful. Upon first viewing, SCP-XXXX contains no anomalous properties. However, once the page containing the inscription is turned, words begin appearing on the pages, at an approximate rate of 35 words per minute. Turning to any other page before turning past the inscription will leave SCP-XXXX blank.

The text written by SCP-XXXX is a political guidebook, personalized to whomever is holding the text. All text is written in the first person, and refers to the reader as "my prince". The guide contains ideas and instructions for the holder of SCP-XXXX on how to achieve the highest political office of whichever country SCP-XXXX is contained in. SCP-XXXX has been proven to contain guides on becoming Prime Minister of England, France, and Canada and most commonly, President of the United States. If SCP-XXXX deems the subject unable to achieve this office, SCP-XXXX will instead give instructions on how to overthrow the current government, and replace it with a more suitable one fit for the subject. No instance of SCP-XXXX has yet to give instructions on what to do once the subject is in office. The page count of SCP-XXXX changes depending on how many instructions needed to propel the reader into power. The page count typically reaches over 1500, and on some accounts, for those who would be incredibly difficult to put in positions of power, the page count has been known to reach approximately 6100. The external appearance of SCP-XXXX remains constant regardless of internal page count.

The tactics employed by SCP-XXXX tend to be in line with ideas presented in "The Prince", frequently citing Machiavelli's 6th, 7th, and 8th chapters (conquest by virtue, fortune, and criminal virtue, respectively). The text will often contain meticulous step by step instructions on specific murders it advises the subject to commit, or detailed plans on how to ruin the reputation of enemies, or blackmail them out of competition. It should be noted however, that the only confirmed instance of someone attempting to use SCP-XXXX to obtain political office failed, resulting in the acquisition of SCP-XXXX.

Discovery: SCP-XXXX was discovered by authorities after searching the home of a local mayoral candidate in ██████████, Michigan, after said candidate (hereby designated PoI-1552) was revealed to have been involved in a blackmail scandal against his opponent. Upon the arrest of PoI-1552, authorities raided his home, where SCP-XXXX was discovered on a nightstand next to his bed. When authorities examined SCP-XXXX, the first page was turned by an officer, resulting in the anomalous properties of SCP-XXXX materializing. Agents embedded in the state police were made aware of SCP-XXXX, whereupon the artifact was confiscated and witnesses amnesticized.

Addendum 02: Declassified excerpts

The following are several excerpts from various instances of SCP-XXXX, with varying subjects.

Subject: Researcher - had previously been arrested for drug posession
…You, my prince, pose an incredible challenge. However, not one I shall fail to rise to. I presume you understand my place of commencement, but let me elaborate for your sake, for my own sanity and yours. This government knows you as a criminal, a vagrant, one without morals or societal inhibitors. My prince, you must change that. How, you ask? Not to worry, my prince. Read further and I shall answer your queries. First, all evidence of your history must be expunged from the public and private eyes of your powerful republic. You'd be surprised the kinds of connections you do not realize you have. Your initial task is to seek out a certain woman you may be familiar with…
SCP-XXXX proceeds to give the name and address of a woman the subject had met several times, who had a distant relative with access to government databases and records containing the account of his arrest. SCP-XXXX gave detailed and entirely correct instructions on how to delete these records. For the sake of security, these instructions have been omitted.

Subject: Researcher - deemed impossible to elect by SCP-XXXX
…My prince, I hope not to hurt thee, but it appears there may be no hope for you to hold the highest ranking office of this government. But there lies still a dream for you, my prince! Perhaps the problem be not you, rather this republic. The masses are unhappy my prince, perhaps they need a figure to follow into battle against their oppressors. Do you not feel these winds of change, my prince? I do, and they excite me most deeply. However, unity is not an easy task. We must start small, my prince. I believe it benefits you most to begin in Boston…
SCP-XXXX begins to provide exhaustive steps on how to bring about a revolution in America, and how to form a brand new government in its wake. For the sake of security, the rest of this form of SCP-XXXX must remain classified.

Subject: D-Class - previously convicted of double murder
…My prince, how you thrill me. To think of the possibilities with you fills me with such joy! The journey ahead is not a short, or easy one, but my prince, it shall be a good one! Before we can even properly start, we must first free you from a facility of the most fierce security and monitoring, only to clear your record of not one, but two murders. How tumultuous a journey we embark on today. Let us start simply, and take this one step at a time. In my experience, I have found that chaos often undoes order, and this "foundation" is one of supreme order. Perhaps, to gain your freedom, my prince, you must grant freedom to others. These beasts in containment - their freedom should provide an apt opportunity to escape, should it not? My prince, to start, you must retrieve something from one of your oppressors. We shall start there…
SCP-XXXX proceeds to give detailed instructions on how to cause a high level and extreme threat containment breach. All other details of this instance of SCP-XXXX must remain classified for the sake of global security.

Additional Notes: In some instances, SCP-XXXX has referred to famous historical figures that it claims to have put into power. Figures mentioned include, but are not limited to: Emiliano Zapata, William Henry Harrison, Mao Zedong, several members of the Hapsburg dynasty, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Fidel Castro. Due to the fact that several of these leaders were gaining power at the same time, it is unknown how SCP-XXXX would have been able to assist all of them at the same time in their respective several year ascensions to power. Many of these administrations and rulers also had incredibly tumultuous rulings and rises to power, calling into question the "success rate" of SCP-XXXX. As a result of these facts, these claims should be considered dubious, but not ruled out entirely, and a level 4 council has been called to discuss the possibility of testing the success rate of SCP-XXXX.

Addendum 03: Incident report 1-A: After much discussion, a council of level 4 personnel authorized the use of SCP-XXXX for real-world testing, using a Foundation-backed candidate (designated PoI-6745) in a very small local election. The test was quickly shut down, once SCP-XXXX suggested the murder of a rival candidate. However, the next morning, Foundation personnel discovered PoI-6745 had acted without Foundation authorization, carrying out the murder instructed in the pages of SCP-XXXX. Foundation personnel investigated the crime scene, whereupon they learned the acts committed by PoI-6745 differed from those advised by SCP-XXXX. Closer examination revealed that SCP-XXXX's text had changed overnight, giving different instructions to PoI-6745. Where as SCP-XXXX had initially advised a quiet poisoning that would be framed to look like a heart attack, SCP-XXXX instead advised stabbing the victim 68 times, and writing the words "I am not a guinea pig" in the victim's blood on the wall of the victim's home. PoI-6745 was taken into Foundation custody, but was so traumatized by his own involvement, that he was unable to provide a verbal explanation for his actions. The events made national news, resulting in the use of a previously untested Class A visual amnestic, which was distributed nationwide, and all published articles referencing the event were taken down. Due to the lack of conclusive evidence about SCP-XXXX's success rate, this test has been deemed a failure, and future real world testing is to be ceased in its entirety.

Addendum 04: Incident report 1-B: On 10/14/17, Dr. ███████ successfully removed SCP-XXXX without proper authorization. Dr. ███████ had broken into SCP-XXXX’s containment by using the numerical combination needed to open SCP-XXXX's containment lock box for that day before the combination was changed. Once Dr. ███████ was apprehended and SCP-XXXX was recovered, researchers were able to sample the text Dr. ███████ was provided by SCP-XXXX. This version of SCP-XXXX differed from previous instances, instead advising Dr. ███████ on how to become a member of O5 personnel. This instance also included possible locations of other anomalous objects that have gone undetected by the Foundation. Due to the incredibly secretive information provided in this iteration, SCP-XXXX has been classified with a yellow threat level. Security measures have been increased, as SCP-XXXX's containment is now secured behind 2 codes, each one being held by separate members of level 4 personnel. Following the revelation of SCP-XXXX's knowledge of 05 personnel, SCP-XXXX's regular testing is to cease, and SCP-XXXX should not be removed unless given consent by a council of level 4 personnel.
