Herein be the honest account of a most terrible offence to your Lord and Maker
Foundation Bestiary Number 41: "Lucifer's Crones"
Being classified by the Royal Foundation for the Containment of Evil2

which has the following standing orders with respect of her containment
Suspected Lucifer's Crones are to be transported to Foundation Village4 with great haste whereupon the old hag is to be dunked in Old Yellow Duck's Pond. If she floats then she is indeed a Crone of Lucifer and she must be put to a fire right away. If the old hag dies in the waters of Old Yellow Duck's Pond she must be given a right proper Christian burial and a letter of condolences sent to the wretched woman's husband.
After burning a Crone of Lucifer, if she be not consumed by the fire, put her demonic husk in the darkest hole you can find where even the devil will not find her!5
and the Foundation does therefore describe this evil entity as follows
Lucifer's Crones are accursed old hags that commune with the source of all evil. Such vile women are marked as daemons by WARTS and MOLES and also by loose tonges that show ungodly temperament SUCH AS blasphemy and knowledge of men's private parts.
Some also show UNNATURAL preoccupation with black cats, the Lord's most wicked of creatures.
Lucifer's Crones are said to have GREAT and TERRIBLE powers over the elements and can START FIRES without kindling or flint. Some have been known to TRANSMUTE a man into a GOAT. Some do claim power to HEAL but many treated have continued to show signs of GOUT, CONSUMPTION, HYSTERIA and GENERAL MALAISE.
Many men in villages discover a Lucifer's Crone in his midst when a wife or sister or mother is WITNESSED showing UNDUE INTEREST in a man that if not her husband!
On the word of Lord York a new means of testing for Lucifer's Crones is now to be used. The Master of Philosophy6 Lord Sussex did discover that these hags do float. The new test means a good Foundation man may avoid speaking to a Crone when he does contain her. We men of philosophy stand at the very edge of progress!
Some earthly remains of Crones will not decay. It is as if she has defiled natural law so greatly natural law has spurned her. It is a great abomination in the eyes of the Lord.
Here follow the events of an INQUISITION of Lucifer's Crone number 49 by Inquisitor Stubbs
Lucifer's Crone number 49 was brought to me yesterday and I did know at once that she be a daemon. She did deny having powers and did COMPLAIN for many many hours at her incarceration but the devil could not befuddle my mind for I did behold a MIGHTY MOLE upon her face and did sicken to behold it!
Her husband, a Godly man, did also speak of her COMPLAINING and general unruly character which I did also witness.
Then this hag, becoming so angered did put a CURSE upon me and said I would be dead when the sun rises for a fifth time and so I did write to the KING to insist she be put to the FIRE.
Here follows the account of the inquisition of Lucifer's Crone number 49 one week later by Inquisitor Smythe
Upon the instructions of the Royal Foundation I was charged with discovering the means by which Inquisitor Stubbs, a good and loyal man, did perish. I did speak to number 49 in a state of great fear for my life, and found her to be in a state of great merriment.
"Have you no shame for your wicked acts," I did ask of her and she did say in reply "he did deserve his fate for he was most rude" and had treated her poorly.
Then I did poke her with hot irons and saw she did NOT burn and would not reveal the workings of her evil art.
Then she did CURSE me and I am now much afraid for my life! This hag must be sent to the fire.
Herein follows the VERDICT of Head Inquisitor Lord Yorke, a proud and noble man of good standing in the Royal Court of ENGLAND, on the issue of Lucifer's Crone number 49, a TERRIBLE HAG
With no small regret I did have the sorrowful duty of writing to the wives of Inquisitors Stubbs and Smythe. I could not tell of their true fate, a most unbecoming and diabolical end not fit for the ears of ladies.
I did also instruct the Royal Foundation to hereby cease all inquisitions of Lucifer's Crones for there be no defence in heaven or earth against such evil. We will now use only the STOOL of DUCKING as described by Master of Philosophy Lord Sussex, a most potent and effective TEST.
Number 49 is dead. Yet she does not rot. Indeed she was in league with the Beast after all!
I fear we acted too late. The Tower is beset by Lucifer's Crones, more are found every day!7 I have written to the King to ask for an additional sum of one pound and twenty to recruit more good men to the work.

At this time we are certain this procedure can be performed at any location with a sufficiently large body of water to submerse a human being. It is not necessary to construct a 'ducking stool', any method of placing the subject into water to test buoyancy is expected to be sufficient.
This documentation for "Foundation Bestiary 4" or FB-04 was found at the disused Legacy Foundation site codenamed "The Tower". Permission from The Crown was sought and granted to access a section of "The Tower" that had been permanently sealed in 1837 after Foundation operations in the United Kingdom were moved to Site 25-C.
In the same room as the document, operatives found the body of a 26 year old woman that appeared to have died moments earlier. Significant Foundation resource has been spent confirming the body was indeed undisturbed on the site for at least two hundred years.
The postmortem determined the cause of death to have been smoke inhalation, however the coroner also confirmed that during the 4 days they held the body there had been no decomposition and rigor mortis had yet to begin. Because the body had been removed from the site it was concluded the body itself was anomalous.
Historical procedures found in Operation Corgi are not typically entered onto the system as live procedures, however due to existence of the anomalous body (provisionally designated as belonging to FB-04-49), Site Director George Trapbull has ordered the containment procedures, however primitive, be considered in effect whilst efforts to acquire an SCP designation and updated procedures — and research whether this threat is still extant — are ongoing.
Disciplinary Report written by Site Supervisor Jean Buntings:
I have been forced to suspend the two field agents who recovered FB-04-49. John has become increasingly paranoid and insists Kelly is "a witch" and has been wasting Foundation time on the Internet attempting to find allies in proving his theory. Kelly does not appear to have done anything wrong, at least technically, but there's definitely something different about her. I can't put my finger on it.
They will return for interviews in two weeks where I will re-evaluate them and make further recommendations.
Disciplinary Report written by Site Supervisor Jean Buntings:
I have reinstated John. We talked about Kelly, about the feeling I had about her and he's convinced me of the truth: She's has to be a witch. It's the only explanation that fits all the facts. I have joined his online group. It's good to have John back and it feels good to be doing something. I apologised for suspending him. I don't know how she fooled me last time. It all seems so… clear now. So obvious. I can just feel it in my gut, and it feels as real to me as my own name.
Tonight we're putting a group together. We're going to get this sorted, one way or another.
Memo to all researchers at Site 25-C from George Trapbull, Site Director.
I know many of us have had a bit of a laugh at the funny old containment procedure with all the funny spellings. I know many of you have questions about whether I was right to order they be issued at all.
Yet here we are. One of our best field agents is dead. Killed by 5 of our own. Field agents, researchers and even her own supervisor.
I'm not here to tell you what caused this. You're the researchers. I do know that both Kelly and the ringleader John McDonnaugh had physical contact with FB-04-49 and this contact appears to have changed both of their behaviours with a lethal result. I do not believe this is a coincidence.
So let me make this clear: The joking is over. We need up to date containment procedures for SCP-XXXX right now. Don't let me down.
