Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Archon1
Special Containment Procedures: All newspaper printing presses known to be under the influence of SCP-XXXX are to have computer imaging systems installed to identify and tag instances of SCP-XXXX-1 during the folding process. Each publication requires a C-Class Containment Specialist on site to: ensure the publication's compliance; operate and maintain the imaging equipment; guarantee copies of newspapers containing the SCP-XXXX-1 instances are destroyed; return one sample of each day's SCP-XXXX-1 instance to the Foundation for automated 'backstop' surveillance.
Foundation Internet monitoring tools are to identify uploaded scans or photographs of SCP-XXXX-1 instances and escalate immediately to system penetration analysts for immediate removal, and identification of the individual or group responsible for uploading. Field agents must be dispatched to remove the SCP-XXXX-1 instance and administer anti-memetic agents.
Under no circumstances should Foundation staff attempt to remove or replace printing hardware at the affected locations without the consent of SCP-XXXX.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a non-corporeal intelligence that currently has direct control of the presses of 16 English language newspapers. It has the potential to control all known printing systems.
The control manifests as the ability to manipulate the output of a newspaper's pasters2 to print anomalous copies of newspaper pages at will. These pages and newspapers containing these pages are designated SCP-XXXX-1.
There is a 0.00001% probability of any given physical page (corresponding to 4 newspaper pages) being an SCP-XXXX-1 instance. This produces, on average, 1 SCP-XXXX-1 newspaper for every 10,000 copies printed.
By controlling the pasters SCP-XXXX is able to change any text to be printed at will. These content changes are designed SCP-XXXX-2. A unique SCP-XXXX-2 instance is created for each newspaper on each day. All SCP-XXXX-1 instances generated by a newspaper on a given day will therefore be identical, but vary between each newspaper.
The Foundation can communicate with SCP-XXXX by placing classified advertisements in one of the afflicted publications. These adverts must begin with the text, "To the REAL Editor-in-Chief."
The Foundation has agreed3 with SCP-XXXX that it will limit itself to changing only the captions of syndicated three panel comic strips. The SCP-XXXX-2 captions typically contain jokes and messages about The Foundation itself, however the consistent location and type of change makes identifying SCP-XXXX-1 instances during the printing process more reliable.
SCP-XXXX's influence over a printing press can be removed by physically destroying and replacing the pasting hardware but this must NOT be attempted due to SCP-XXXX's stated intention to assert its influence over more publications unless the Foundation allows it to continue.
It is believed that as the affected publications become digital only this threat will eventually be neutralised. Until then the Foundation's focus is on preventing SCP-XXXX-1 instances being distributed to the public and, where this containment fails preventing online propagation of SCP-XXXX-2 content online.
