Note: Things struck through are things I rejected personally but thought might put some interesting thoughts in the game Dev's head about how these items should be depicted and/or used in game, as well as the RL origins and uses of the plant.
Item #: SCP-TSBR
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: Plants grown from TSBR seeds are to be kept in a climate controlled hydroponic rig in site 50's safe storage area. Though lighting and watering requirements are not stringent for these plants, better care translates into higher potency. These plants may be blended into a number of herbal teas, with different anomalous results for each. A complete list is available in Dr. Vance Benton's office. Researchers are encouraged to log their own experiences. Mass spectrometry results for TSBR are to be logged in the archives.
Description: TSBR is a series of herb seeds and the resulting plants from across the northern hemisphere discovered in a cave approximately 300 miles east of the Lake Bikal Containment Zone where SCP 610 is contained. Paintings in the cave depict prehistoric humans and entities similar in appearance to a number of different proto sarkic mutations previously documented by the foundation. Though the seal of Ion is notably absent from the cave's paintings, as are any mention of the Devas or their civilization. Besides the obviously Sarkic images are several images of part mushroom humanoids and humans engaged in the cultivation of varying herbs and fungi.
TSBR itself was found at the back of the cave, near a skeleton bearing a number of mutations including elongated legs, keratin like plates across the arms, legs, and shoulders, and a glowing green mummified bulb of flesh that resembles some of the colored growths on SCP BEHK aka Mastermass. DNA was too degraded to get more than a few snippets from the corpse, but several sequences recovered from it suggest the corpse was partly infected with the SCP. The corpse was not consumed by the infection however, and was wearing hide clothing with an amadou cloth cap, gloves and primitive bag. The bag contained smaller amadou cloth pouches, each with seeds of a different species of TSBR or a different blend of TSBR herbs dried, ground coarsely, and prepared for brewing.
Mass spectrometry showed a number of compounds in common to the green flesh bulb and the herbal brews, compounds not present in similar green growths harvested from the section of Mastermass in custody. When tests with the same brews found in the skeleton's personal effects were conducted on samples of flesh from mastermass, cellular mitosis ceased for a short period. However, mitosis accelerated for a short period after it resumed before returning to its normal cell division rate. The changes to mitosis rate showed a wide variation in cultured sections of Mastermass, but a range was identifiable.
Species included Peppermint, White Horehound, Feverfew, Valerian, Tulsi Basil (Ocimum Sanctum), Bee balm (M. Didyma), Lemon balm, True Hyssop, Lavender, and a handful of others. Mastermass showed no reaction to their presence when tested, except for Tulsi Basil and Valerian, which it greedily attempted to cover with biomass and consume when presented with cut portions of the plant. The biomass was also shown to surround living plants of Tulsi Basil and Valerian as though coveting the plants themselves, in one case caught on tape, repeatedly rubbing against them and humming more loudly and insistently than normal.
According to Dr. Benton, Tulsi Basil and Valerian have been used for centuries to soothe stress, with Tulsi containing a number of compounds useful as digestive aids, compounds common to all members of the genus Ocimum. SCP PESK has also shown a fondness for tulsi basil, suggesting that it derives some sort of health benefit from its consumption. Instances of SCP PESK however, become much greedier than BEHK Mastermass did in response, frequently attempting to pull up or trample the plants, and stuff pieces into the joints of their 'shells'. One even uprooted an entire Tulsi Basil plant and hauled it to the queen, which greedily ate the entire plant, including the roots and soil. Normal tulsi basil and valerian do not produce this effect in SCPs, though Mastermass would not consume a tulsi basil plant when it was given to it as a food item.
Samples of the TSBR Lavender species were sent off site for testing on SCP 049 due to that entity's love of the flower. But results have not come back yet, likely due to lavender's slow growth time. A number of TSBR plants and brews have been distributed to site staff for purposes of stress relief and morale improvement. All brews that are safe to drink have so far been combinations of three of the above plants. However, several older brews with psychoactive properties made from combining four or more of the above plants were previously tested and discarded despite their having a marked repellant effect on SCPs being tested on base.
Found in Doctor Gerald's office…
You've changed old friend, Dawn and I are worried about you. Please try this anti stress drink we've created to help, and go see the site psychologist. I know it can be hard as a member of the Foundation to admit it, but you need help. Those rings are making you lose your mind. We don't want to force the issue with you but we will if we have to.
Dr. Harmon
Master Brew List…
Anti PESK brew - Distributed to offices around safe storage to help reduce violence associated with SCP PESK escape attempts. PESK is not a toy, not a pet, please contact us in Safe Storage if you see one anywhere other than the storage area. That includes the warehouse.
Night Vision brew - available in breakroom as the ingredients are appealing to taste. In addition Dr. Cimmarian has requested a small supply for use as a tool during Ethics Committee investigations. Doctor Pendium has been issued some as well for use in his work in S-11.
Anti Stress Brew - Has been requested on behalf of Doctor Gerald by Doctor Harmon and Director McGuire, issued to Alex Rutherford in Safe Storage after the outburst in which he assaulted Doctor Harmon.
Stimulating Brew - Readily available in the break room beside coffee machine, may save us money on coffee expenses if it really catches on, and it has really caught on. The guards can't get enough of this and I'm having trouble keeping it in stock.
Anti Microbial Brew - One of the original brews found on the "Sark Man" as we're calling him. Need to produce more of this, Doctor Good and Doctor Winters have ordered this in quantity for their studies into Mastermass. I can't blame them. And having some form of sedation for the more hazardous instances of the thing or some kind of decoy to distract the "Sark Dogs" with may come in handy. Will talk to them about possible use in defenses against BEHK.
Strange Brew - This hallucinogenic compound is restricted, but several instances went missing from containment. Although further probing is being conducted, this is not for regular distribution. This is one of the original brews found on the Sark Man skeleton in containment.
Doctor Good, Transport, including Delta 7 Underground Railroad, has requested four gallons of the anti microbial brew created from TSBR. They want to test it as a topical antiseptic.
Testing TSBR
One instance of BEHK-B was placed in a sealed containment cell with a bowl of TSBR Anti Stress brew. Instance tried to vehemently take bowl from D-class resulting in infection. Instance drank over a quart of the stuff and lay down, sleeping for over six hours. D-class was studied by BEHK team and then terminated.
One large chunk of SCP BEHK was placed in a sealed containment cell with a pair of tulsi basil (O. Sanctum) plants, one TSBR variety and one normal. Though the normal version of O. Sanctum didn't produce a psychoactive effect, BEHK did surround the plant and refuse to let staff near it. However, the TSBR version of the plant acted as an attractant, and BEHK consumed the entire 1 foot tall plant down to a stump after rubbing against it almost to the point of snapping the stem. Curiously the stump was left behind, raising questions about BEHK's intelligence and planning ability. Would it grow food if left on its own I wonder? Would it engage in agriculture as we do despite needing meat?
The previous two tests were repeated with a complete set of TSBR plants in the containment cell and brews made from each plant. Most of the plants were ignored by Mastermass, but the Tulsi Basil (O. Sanctum) and Valerian plants were almost entirely consumed after being used as a toy. BEHK B instance slept for eight hours instead of the previous six with the addition of Valerian, and it behaved in a sedated or sluggish manner for half an hour after waking.
One set of each species of TSBR plants was placed in a sealed containment cell with scp PESK instance. PESK trampled, pulled up, and tried to steal tulsi basil and peppermint TSBR plants while ignoring most of the others and destroying the horehound instance. These plants are associated with treating digestive upsets in common literature on herbal medicines. It leads me to wonder if PESK instances gain a benefit from its consumption. Testing will be ongoing as a way to control PESK's behavior.
Test consisted of one petri dish of staphylococcus bacteria, of which half was brushed with generous amounts of the anti microbial brew. The staph colonies were almost completely wiped out, numbers reduced to a handful rather than the billions previously counted on the dish. Test was repeated with a number of skin infections and finally with Mastermass. Although significant antibiotic properties were found, Mastermass had a much… different reaction. Its cells stopped moving. They were alive, that was certain, they were still metabolizing nutrients that came their way. They just didn't move, and didn't divide for about five minutes. Then Mastermass culture began to divide at warp speed before returning to its normal rate. Petri dish began to heat up with the speed at which the cell culture was dividing and almost burned the agar solution in the dish. I did some math, large scale this rapid cell division could create a burst of steam and charred flesh if the size of the Mastermass instance and amount of brew were large enough.
Addendum: (out of character notes) Parts for using this scp are found all over Site 50 in small quantities. Bottled water and the microwaves in the breakrooms, and a cup in your off hand, are required to brew along with the herbs. SCP IEMP may attempt to steal herbal brew blends from your inventory when he attacks. (?)
To get started in creating brews, visit the Breakroom for three herbal blends premade and kept in stock. One of these blends will trick PESK into thinking you're one of their own, the second will temporarily increase movement speed, and the third grants temporary night vision. While a fantastic advantage on the surface, night vision may actually become a hinderance when dealing with the Collective if the player is not fast enough to turn their flashlight on when attacked, meaning many new players may fall for this trick, thinking its a gift, use it, get cocky, and get gotten. Movement speed may backfire in a similar manner, players may become overconfident and blunder into an attack if they are not careful.
A hydroponic room has been built in one of the Safe Storage lockers containing breeding populations of each plant, from which small amounts can be harvested. The HR breakroom and O-Wing breakroom contain ONE anti PESK brew each. However Benton's cubical contains the master list of all brew locations for those who missed them and Dr. Cimmarian's office contains a small quantity of lavender and peppermint, so the HR office is a worthwhile stop. Alex Rutherford's desk in Safe storage contains a small quantity of Valerian. The guard room off D-class prison block contains a large quantity of peppermint, which is safe to have in large amounts in the game due to the prolific nature of the plant. Tulsi Basil can be found in Labs where Mastermass was being researched. White horehound is found in Dr. Slate's office. Dr. Gerald is in possession of a bouquet of bee balm and tulsi basil flowers, presumably given to him as a gift to try and ease his erratic behavior.
I was originally going to try and create a crafting system and then realized it became too complicated. So I'm going to write down a number of brews and their locations instead, then do notes. Likewise I was originally going to have the brews be teas that you made in the microwave in the break room. But I felt that a crafting system as the game stands would detract from the game and reduce the value of pills. Likewise I was going to suggest their item texture be little tea tins or in Gerald's case a bouquet meant to help calm his troubled psyche. In the second idea I had for this scp however, little colored corked bottles may be better. I also considered the idea of scent bombs to act as decoys for the Sark dogs and lone PESK instances. I also scrapped an idea for a Hyla tribe one, because they seem to hunt more on sound than anything else and I'm not entirely certain of their lack of sentience.
Anti Pesk brew - All three breakrooms, tricks the PESK into thinking you're one of them and works on single instances only, and not the queen.
Anti Stress brew - increases stamina for a short period of time, rare, only two in game possibly due to a culture of "aloofness" encouraged by the nature of a Foundation worker's job. "I don't need a special brew to handle stress, I'm an SCP Foundation Agent damnit!" found in Dr. Gerald's room and on Alex Rutherford's worktable in safe storage, triggers a 'catnip' like response in predatory, non sentient SCPs. As a result they may try to "steal" them from you.
Night Vision brew - Found in main break room, Dr. Cimmarian's office, sleeping quarters, does what it says on the tin, may cause player to forget about their flashlight power, making them vulnerable to dying from TELR and PESK.
Anti microbial brew - Found in Lab 102, 103, Transport, and SCP BEHK observation area. Reduces damage from Mastermass attacks if active when attacked.
Stimulating Brew - Found in the break room and guard room near D block, increases movement speed.
Strange Brew - Possible plot device, hallucinogenic, allows one to see and/or hear messages from the future or past, strike if not wanted. Find in hidey holes associated with the alternate "you" who is leaving messages all over the site. Effect lingers, causing the player to see SCPs that aren't there after use, possibly causing misdirection related deaths.
If you need a specific effect just add a brew with it to the game, though I suggest putting it in a place where it makes sense to do so. For example Rutherford would have an anti stress brew because of his attitude problems, Gerald for the psychological issues caused by the Rings of Eden. And it makes sense to have anti PESK brews close to SAFE storage because they were initially running around like crazy over there.
Enclosed are a number of notes about the RL plants that inspired this creation…
Peppermint - Grows prolifically in a wide variety of environments. Its used for stomach and respiratory problems and is cooling and soothing in general. Easy to grow indoors.
White Horehound - a bitter herb used in making cough syrup and anti cough teas, best heavily sweetened. Was used for making candy.
Feverfew - used for anti migraine tea, strong enough to effect medications metabolized by the liver (ie tylanol)
Valerian - often used in conjunction with chamomile to aid in sleep.
Tulsi Basil (Ocimum Sanctum) - is a plant with a long history in ayruvedic medicine. Its called an "adaptogen" which in general means that its the opposite of a mutagenic compound. It helps to heal stress to the body rather than encourage rampent cell growth like a carcinogen. I've grown this plant for about four years now, and its quite soothing to crumble into a coffee filter when brewing one's morning cup
Bee balm (M. Didyma) - Antiseptic, Gingivitis, Intestinal Gas, Stimulant.
Lemon balm - A natural anti depressant
True Hyssop - Coughing, sore throat, expectorant
Lavender - calming and soothing
