Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: All instances of SCP-XXXX are to be contained within Safe Item Storage in Research Sector-96. Access to SCP-XXXX is limited to class X researchers, and only for approved testing. Under no circumstances is SCP-XXXX to be used outside of an approved test. Disciplinary action for misuse of SCP-XXXX depends on the severity of the effects of such use, and can range anywhere from reprimand to reassignment to a different facility to termination.

Class D amnestics have been used on all public instances of SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2, plus anyone who had knowledge of the effects of SCP-XXXX, except as otherwise designated. Class C amnestics have been used on all medical personnel who treated SCP-XXXX-2.46. Class B amnestics have been used on all family members and neighbors of SCP-XXXX-2.46.

All dental records for SCP-XXXX-1 instances have been identified and altered. All medical documentation, including autopsy records as required, for instances of SCP-XXXX-2 have also been identified, altered, and in the case of SCP-XXXX-2.46, destroyed. Due to the extreme and rapid deterioration of SCP-XXXX-2.46, in that case the body was cremated, and a cover story was created to explain the death.

There is no need to contain any remaining public instances of SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2, as all anomalous effects upon them ceased after SCP-XXXX was contained as of XX/XX/20XX.

Testing of SCP-XXXX will take place in a facility off site from Sector-96, at least 200 meters away from any person not actively participating in the test. Monitoring of any tests shall be done via security cameras and a radio intercom. Due to the length of time required for the effects of SCP-XXXX to manifest, the testing facility should have appropriate accommodations to allow up to a dozen people to reside there for up to a month. All instances of SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 created by use of SCP-XXXX will only use D-class personell, and are to be given a D classification (SCP-XXXX-1.D1, SCP-XXXX-2.D1, SCP-XXXX-1.D2, etc.) All bodies of expired instances of SCP-XXXX-2.DX will be cremated after autopsy.

Description: SCP-XXXX collectively consists of three (3) tubes of BrandName toothpaste, of a type advertised as being able to both whiten teeth and strengthen enamel. Each tube originally contained 4 oz. of toothpaste. One tube has barely been used, another is half empty, and the third is almost empty. There are no discernable differences among the tubes aside from the quantity of toothpaste that has been used from each one. They all have the same manufacturing lot number, and were sold from the same BrandName2 grocery store, located in City, State, USA. An additional 21 tubes from the same manufacturing run have been located, tested, and destroyed, having been found to have no anomalous properties.

The anomalous properties of SCP-XXXX do not manifest unless the following criteria are met.

1. At least one person opens a tube of SCP-XXXX and starts to use it as part of a standard oral hygiene regimen. Multiple people can use the same toothpaste so long as such use takes place within about 30 hours of the first person's initial use of SCP-XXXX. If the remaining criteria are met, all such persons then each become an instance of SCP-XXXX-1. Otherwise, no anomalous effects on the potential SCP-XXXX-1 are observed.

2. At least one other person, who is not using SCP-XXXX, must be within a radius of approximately 70 meters of any person using SCP-XXXX at the time the toothpaste is being used. There is no time limit between when the toothpaste is first used by a potential SCP-XXXX-1 and when a person who is not using the toothpaste comes within the 70-meter radius and becomes a potential SCP-XXXX-2. All such persons who have not also started using SCP-XXXX within the 30-hour period described in step 1 then each becomes an instance of SCP-XXXX-2.

After 30 hours have passed, instances of SCP-XXXX-1 will notice rapid improvement in the appearance and physical structure of their teeth, so long as they continue using the toothpaste and also there remain any living instances of SCP-XXXX-2 associated with them. Normal staining, such as from coffee, soda and tobacco use, will disappear completely over a period of approximately 7 days. Staining and discoloration associated with poor dental hygiene, disease, and medication will also disappear over the same time period. Structural damage to the teeth because of trauma, dental work, or age, will reverse themselves. Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 have reported fillings being pushed out of their teeth as the enamel regrows, damage due to bruxism and similar trauma reversing, and crowns popping loose as the teeth are restored. Missing teeth, however, do not grow back.

Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 must continue to use SCP-XXXX at least once per 30-hour period. If an instance of SCP-XXXX-1 does not use the toothpaste within that time period, all instances of SCP-XXXX-2 that were created resultant to SCP-XXXX-1's use of the toothpaste will stop experiencing deleterious effects. Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 will then start seeing rapid deterioration of their teeth, to the point that they will be worse off than before they started using the toothpaste. Cavities reappear and multiply, restored enamel sloughs off, and the resulting dental repairs can consist of fillings, crowns, bridges, dental implants, and in two cases, complete loss of all teeth resulting in the need for a full set of dentures to replace them. This deterioration takes place within a 7 to 10-day period (with one exception) after when either SCP-XXXX-1 stops using the toothpaste, or there are no more living instances of SCP-XXXX-2 associated with that particular SCP-XXXX-1.

Instances of SCP-XXXX-2 will experience symptoms related to various calcium deficiencies. Symptoms include cramping, aching, and pain in the muscles, also increased blood pressure, insomnia, dry scaly skin, listlessness, coarse hair, and brittle nails. In extreme cases, conditions like rapid onset osteoporosis will set in, resulting in brittle bones that break easily.

At least one instance of SCP-XXXX-2 will continue to deteriorate until either that person expires, which will take place within 7 to 10 days, or the instance of SCP-XXXX-1 they are associated with stops using SCP-XXXX. If the latter, all physical deterioration of the associated SCP-XXXX-2 instances will cease, but there will not be a restoration of their health to as it was before. Ironically, tooth decay is not a symptom experienced by instances of SCP-XXXX-2, there will be no effect on their teeth one way or the other.

If an instance of SCP-XXXX-1 has multiple instances of SCP-XXXX-2 associated with them, upon the death of one instance of SCP-XXXX-2, another will take that one's place, and will also expire within 7 to 10 days, resulting in yet another associated SCP-XXXX-2 taking that person's place, and so on. This pattern can repeat indefinitely so long as persons continue to enter the 70-meter radius of an instance of SCP-XXXX-1 while SCP-XXXX is being used.

Identification:

A spike in emergency room admissions to Placename Hospital of otherwise healthy patients aged 18 to 23 suffering broken bones caught the notice of Field Agent John Doe, who upon investigation determined that they were all coming from the Placename Residence Hall at Placename University. While conducting interviews of the residents, it was determined that four students (SCP-XXXX-1.2 through 1.5) in room Number were not experiencing symptoms of calcium deficiency. It was then that the agent learned about how one of the students (SCP-XXXX-1.5) had fillings that "just dropped out of my mouth." SCP-XXXX-1.5 secured a dentist appointment within a day, and the dentist discovered that not only had three teeth had fillings expelled, but also a root canal had been reversed. In fact, the crown covering the root canal popped off just as she was examining SCP-XXXX-1.5. The other three students were determined to have brightening and restoration to their teeth as well, although not with as dramatic improvements as SCP-XXXX-1.5.

It was around the same time that a student who was later designated as SCP-XXXX-2.13, who had been admitted to the hospital four days previously, expired due to his ribs breaking during a coughing fit, and one of the bone shards piercing his heart. Five additional SCP-XXXX-2 instances (2.16, 2.21, 2.28, 2.30, and 2.37) also died before the relationship between them, the four instances of SCP-XXXX-1, and the tube of toothpaste that they shared was determined. Agent Doe then began investigating all surrounding doctor's offices, dental offices, hospitals and urgent care facilities for any similar occurrences.

SCP-XXXX-1.1 lived alone in his house in semi-rural Place county, and had been using SCP-XXXX for three weeks when SCP-XXXX-2.1 moved into the house next door to his. SCP-XXXX-2.1 was an elderly caucasian woman who already had mild osteoporosis, so it was not considered too unusual when she ended up in the hospital with a broken hip after living in her new house for only three days. It was more unusual that she died nine days later due to complications of advanced osteoporosis. Her house was 60 meters away from SCP-XXXX-1.1's residence. The next closest neighbor to SCP-XXXX-1.1, who lived 85 meters away, was unaffected. Eight days after SCP-XXXX-2.1 expired, half of SCP-XXXX-1.1's teeth shattered when he bit into an apple.

When SCP-XXXX-1.6 and SCP-XXXX-1.7 started using SCP-XXXX they were delighted with the results. They didn't associate it with the jump in ambulance calls from their neighbors, but when their eight-year-old son suddenly developed heart palpitations, they called 911. In placing him on the gurney, paramedics broke at least 15 bones just from picking him up. SCP-XXXX-2.46 died only four hours after being admitted to the hospital, five days after his parents started using SCP-XXXX. One of the nurses, before being given amnestics, testified in tears that "every time that poor boy took a breath… I heard something else… snap. He was howling in pain, and I kept hearing this, this crackling sound." It is hypothesized that his existing medical condition, having been diagnosed with type I osteogenesis imperfecta at birth, contributed to his more rapid deterioration and early death.
