THIS SCP IS TRASH IN ITS CURRENT STATE. I MAY OR MAY NOT REVISIT IN THE FUTURE

Item #: SCP-4614

Object Class: Safe Neutralized

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4614 is to be stored inside a code-locked briefcase within a standard containment chamber at Site-19. The chamber must be constantly monitored by security cameras, and only personnel of security clearance level 2 and higher are permitted to enter containment. The briefcase must not be opened unless approved by the site director. Due to the nature of SCP-4614, it is considered an emotional hazard, and staff members with histories of depression and/or anxiety are not permitted to enter containment, regardless of the site director’s approval. SCP-4614's current state prevents it from being used as intended. The remains SCP-4614 is to be stored inside a code-locked briefcase within anomalous object storage at Site-19. SCP-4614 is presumed to be devoid of its previously anomalous properties. Further testing of SCP-4614 with other SCPs is strictly prohibited.

Description: SCP-4614 is a small glass bottle of unknown origin. No markings, labels, or identification of any kind appear on the bottle. SCP-4614 bears a slight resemblance to Coca-Cola bottles originating production in the 1950s. Chemical testing has revealed traces of sugar and high-fructose corn syrup along the inner walls of SCP-4614.

SCP-4614’s anomalous effects begin when the bottle is used to play a game commonly referred to as “spin-the-bottle.” In the case of SCP-4614, when placed on a relatively flat surface and given a quick torque, it will spin at an expected rate, then come to a complete stop. When SCP-4614 ceases rotation, its open end will point towards the living organism in the room who is to cease life function next (who will from this point on be referred to as SCP-4614-1).

Initial testing revealed that if SCP-4614-1 is to move about the room during the initial spin, SCP-4614 will continue to spin until SCP-4614-1 comes to rest. If SCP-4614-1 is positioned behind a separate, non-target individual when SCP-4614 comes to rest, SCP-4614 will perform a lateral roll until it reaches such a position so that the bottleneck may point towards SCP-4614-1. Several experiments have been conducted, each resulting in the bottleneck of SCP-4614 pointing towards the subject within 10 meters who will expire the soonest. SCP-4614 seems to be mostly unaffected by many forms of blunt force trauma. Dropping SCP-4614 from heights that would normally shatter a glass bottle appears to have little to no effect (see Addendum).

If the cause of death that is known prior to the expiration of SCP-4614-1 and that cause is averted, SCP-4614-1 will expire due to a separate, random cause of death at the same time the original expiration was intended to occur. The death of SCP-4614-1 disclosed by SCP-4614 is inevitable and unavoidable. SCP-4614 is also known to induce severe emotional distress upon each instance of SCP-4614-1.

SCP-4614 was discovered by the Foundation on 01/20/1996 after a police report was filed in █████, ██. This report was filed in response to a gunshot suicide linked to previous use of SCP-4614. The victim, Harrison Tilles, is reported to have attended a party five days prior to his death. Eyewitness testimony claims that SCP-4614, owned by Harrison, was used to play "strip spin-the-bottle" during the party. The group became confused after SCP-4614 continuously targeted attendee Brianna Dunn. When SCP-4614 would not target anybody but Brianna, the group decided to terminate the game. Later that night, Brianna expired as a result of driving while under the influence of alcohol. Harrison became aware of SCP-4614's anomalous properties two days after the party when he unintentionally knocked SCP-4614 over after placing it on his countertop at his place of residence. Harrison noticed that SCP-4614 continued to follow him around his kitchen as he moved. He informed his friends of this phenomenon, only to be disregarded as delusional. Harrison was not heard from for three days. His body was discovered by his friends when they entered his home. It is unknown how Harrison came into possession of SCP-4614.

Addendum 4614-1: After discovering that SCP-4614 was resistant to direct blows and falls from considerable heights, researchers were assigned to analyze it on a microscopic level. Analysis shows that micro-fissures along the bottle began to form after each instance of blunt force being applied to SCP-4614.

Researcher’s Note: SCP-4614’s tendency to resist being broken through blunt force seemed to be a feature ensuring that SCP-4614 would not break in the event that it needed to roll off a surface and navigate the room in order to point to its target.

Conversation Log:

The following is the transcription of a cell phone conversation between Dr. Wyatt and Dr. Shaw the day after Dr. Shaw took charge of research regarding SCP-4614. Dr. Shaw is in his laboratory with his research team, and Dr. Wyatt is presumed to be at her place of residence at the time of this conversation.

<Begin Log, February 11, 1996, 09:34:21 CST>

Dr. Shaw: Hello?

Dr. Wyatt: This is Dr. Wyatt. You and your team need to figure out how the hell I'm going to save my daughter.

Dr. Shaw: Woah, woah, hold your horses. What, now?

Dr. Wyatt: You heard me. My daughter is going to die within two days and you have to help me prevent that.

Dr. Shaw: Look, I don't have to help you do anything. But I will. How do you expect me to do help you?

Dr. Wyatt: Run more tests, ask the O5 council, do something, goddammit!

Dr. Shaw: First of all, there is no way in hell that I'm getting in contact with the O5 council. Secondly, you ran the damned tests on the dogs. That lab died of an aneurysm, despite us delaying its euthanization.

Dr. Wyatt: That was one experiment. It could have been an anomaly. Find a solution, please!

Dr. Shaw and what is assumed to be his research staff can be heard muttering in the background.

Dr. Shaw: Look, I can help you, but it's gonna have to be off the books.

Dr. Wyatt: Thank Christ! Thank you so much, Gary. You haven't a clue what this means to me.

Dr. Shaw: Hey, I like you, Janice. I know you're in a tough spot right now, and the last thing you need is a death in the family. Especially your daughter.

Dr. Wyatt: Thank you so much. Contact me as soon as you've figured something out.

Dr. Shaw: Of course. Good day, doctor.

Dr. Wyatt: Goodbye.

The following is the transcription of a cell phone conversation between Dr. Shaw and Dr. Wyatt approximately three hours after the previous phone call. Dr. Shaw is in his office, and Dr. Wyatt is presumed to be at her place of residence during this conversation.

<Begin Log, February 11, 1996, 12:48:11 CST>

Dr. Wyatt: Hello?

Dr. Shaw: I've found something.

Dr. Wyatt: What!? What is it?

Dr. Shaw: The pomegranate.

Dr. Wyatt: Which pomegranate? Do you mean SCP-156?

Dr. Shaw: That's exactly what I mean.

Dr. Wyatt: Won't that thing leave my daughter dead for half the year?

Dr. Shaw: Yeah, but that's better than forever, isn't it?

Dr. Wyatt: I suppose…

Dr. Shaw: I should have it by the end of the day.

Dr. Wyatt: You must make haste. I don't know exactly when she's going to die. It's been a risk just waiting as long as we have.

Dr. Shaw: I know, I know. I'll take care of it.

Dr. Wyatt: How are you even going to get ahold of it?

Dr. Shaw: I've talked to my research team, and they decided that they'd help me sneak into its containment chamber. Its regenerative properties work for me — they won't even realize that anyone's stolen any of it.

Dr. Wyatt: How are you going to sneak in?

Dr. Shaw: Just leave that to me and my team.

Dr. Wyatt: Please, just hurry and get an aril from 156.

Dr. Shaw: Hey, you do realize I'm sticking my neck out for you? If I get demoted to D-Class for this, it's your ass.

Dr. Wyatt: I'm sorry… I just really want my daughter to be okay…

Dr. Shaw: Don't worry, I'm on it. I'll come to your house once I retrieve a sample. Make sure your daughter's there with you.

Dr. Wyatt: Of course. Thank you, Gary. Take care.

Dr. Shaw: Catch you later!

<End Log, February 11, 1996 12:52:56 CST>

Dr. ███████ overheard the previous phone call and reported Dr. Shaw to the site director. Subsequently, Dr. Shaw's cellular phone was fitted with a covert listening device without his knowledge. The following conversation was recorded with the device after Dr. Shaw arrived at Dr. Wyatt's place of residence.

<Begin Log, February 11, 1996, 13:56:35 CST>

Dr. Shaw knocks on Dr. Wyatt's front door. After a few seconds, Dr. Wyatt answers the door.

Dr. Wyatt: Welcome, please, come in!

Dr. Shaw: Where is she?

Dr. Wyatt: She is in her bedroom. Please, follow me.

Footstep sounds, rustling noises, and a door creaking open can be heard in the background.

Dr. Wyatt: Wake up, ██████, Dr. Shaw is here to see you.

Dr. Shaw: Hey, sleepyhead. Do you like pomegranates?

██████: I guess so…

Dr. Shaw: Well, today's your lucky day. Here, check this out. This is the cure you've been looking for.

██████: This is gonna prevent me from dying?

Dr. Shaw: Well, not exactly. Listen, when you eat this, you're gonna die.

██████: What!?

Dr. Shaw: Not permanently! This single pomegranate seed will leave you in a temporary state of rest, similar to death. That is, until March 21st. On that day, your consciousness will be restored. Then, on September 21st, you'll be put back into that death-like state.

██████: So, you're saying if I eat this, I'm gonna be dead for half a year?

Dr. Shaw: Well, half the year, every year, until you die of some other cause.

██████: Great… so I'm gonna live half a life…

Dr. Shaw: Would you rather be permanently dead?

There is a slight pause for a few seconds.

██████: You're right…

██████ then consumes the aril and undergoes the effects of SCP-156.

Dr. Wyatt: So, now we have to be patient?

Dr. Shaw: Pretty much. We'll just have to wait until March 21st rolls around.

Dr. Wyatt: Thank you for your help, Gary. I will keep you updated should anything happen in the meantime.

Dr. Shaw: Of course, Janice. God be with you. See you later.

Dr. Wyatt: Goodbye, Gary.

Dr. Wyatt proceeds to exit the home.

<End Log, February 11, 1996 14:01:29 CST>

Addendum 4614-2: Dr. Wyatt remained on leave of absence through the month of February until March 21st. On March 21st, 1996, ██████ Wyatt was pronounced deceased by a Foundation field team dispatched to Dr. Wyatt's place of residence. Site-19 Medical Department performed an extensive autopsy on ██████ Wyatt. No cause of death was discovered. The cause of death remains unknown.

Addendum 4614-3: Dr. Shaw has been demoted to D-Class as of March 22nd, 1996. Dr. Wyatt disappeared on March 23rd, 1996. Three days later, Dr. Wyatt's dismembered body was discovered on an undisclosed set of train tracks. The cause of death is presumed to be suicide by locomotive.
