the hydraulic alligator is a mechanical beast that resembles a gator made of clockwork parts. instead of fearsome jaws, it has a beak sharp and sturdy enough to cut through most metals. when the beak is closed, it can peck through most substances that have hardness equal to or less than diamond. experiments have proven that the hydraulic alligator is made of Lonsdaleite, a substance found in meteorites that is harder than diamond. it cannot smell, see, feel, or taste, but has small sonar dishes on its back. its tail is barbed and quite mobile, and it has sharp claws that can help it climb just about anything.
Inside the beak, instead of the throat, is the creature's central processing unit. this is the least protected part of the hydraulic alligator, and if it needs to be suppressed, you can take it down with a well-placed bullet into this. this part of it is highly regenerative and upon damage to the unit, it will regenerate within about eight hours. however, it cannot remove the bullet from itself, so upon suppression, the bullet will need to be removed so regeneration can successfully be performed.
Hydraulic alligators are pack hunters, and each pack comes with an alpha. there are a few key differences between alphas and non-alphas. the alphas are about 1.2 times larger than their weaker counterparts and have many more barbs on their tail. the most important difference is the presence of multiple central processing units in their beak, meaning the alpha is very good at focusing on more than one target, and multiple shots are required to take out all the CPUs. the alphas also seem to have a primary link between the other hydraulic alligators in its pack, as once the alpha is taken down, the others shut down until the alpha's regeneration is complete. rarely, alphas can be found without a pack, in which they will hunt their prey on their own.
it is unknown why hydraulic alligators hunt, as their only form of sustenance is through solar panels on their back. most assumptions involve them being built for military use. some experiments have found a few identification numbers for each one, ranging from what seems to be the first one (0000) to what is hoped to be the last one (5729). so far two hundred and nineteen hydraulic alligators have been recovered and brought to SCP facilities.
