Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a secure storage container with all components separated from each other. Under no circumstances is SCP-XXXX-1 through SCP-XXXX-8 to be removed from containment for testing without proper authorization. SCP-XXXX is under no circumstances to be attached to a television unless permitted for testing.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a Funai brand Combination VCR and DVD recorder, model number ZV427FX4, and a collection of eight VHS tapes. The included tapes are of varying quality, from well-worn to mint condition. Once connected to a television via AV input, SCP-XXXX will display a menu different from its original model. Any attempt to navigate this menu will result in a critical error, causing SCP-XXXX to shut down. This effect is not observed when SCP-XXXX is connected via HDMI input, it will work like a normal recorder and media player. SCP-XXXX was discovered in a homestead outside of Waco, Texas. Discovery log enclosed below.

SCP-XXXX exhibits anomalous effects whenever any of the aforementioned tapes are inserted and played via the analog switches on SCP-XXXX. Each tape, now dubbed SCP-XXXX-1 through SCP-XXXX-8, exhibit various anomalous effects on the viewer. Descriptions of the videos and anomalous effects of SCP-XXXX-1 through SCP-XXXX-8 are listed below:

Item Description Content
SCP-XXXX-1 One well-worn VHS tape with its label written over and scratched off multiple times. The only visible label reads “01”. [Testing was conducted with three D-class personnel. Once inserted into SCP-XXXX, a static image of a battlefield resembling Flanders, Belgium after its historic battle during 1917 is displayed for 1 minute, and the video cuts out for 30 seconds, leaving only audio. D-class personnel, before expiration, described the audio as of “screaming, crunching, and squishing”. After 30 seconds elapses, video returns to display a scene at the compound of the cult “Heaven’s Gate” before their infamous mass suicide on March 24, 1997. Each cult member was replaced with members of the Foundation, to which testing D-Class began expressing discomfort. The O5 Council then meet to discuss [REDACTED], and SCP-XXXX-1 ends abruptly right before O5-1 speaks on the matter. Throughout the duration of the tape, testing D-Class reported hearing "numbers" in their heads, and halfway through SCP-XXXX-1, D-84721 spontaneously expired due to intracerebral haemorrhage, the cause of which was not identifiable. After SCP-XXXX-1 ended, the remaining D-class expired in a similar manner.]
SCP-XXXX-2 One somewhat-worn VHS tape in significantly better condition than SCP-XXXX-1, though its label has also been written over and scratched off multiple times. The only visible label reads “02”. [Testing was conducted with three D-class personnel. Once inserted into SCP-XXXX, a video of KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov’s warning to the United States during an interview in 1984 begins to play. At approximately 50 second intervals, a Nixie tube displaying a random number replaces the interview for 4 seconds before returning to Bezmenov. Throughout the duration of SCP-XXXX-2, testing D-Class expressed acute paranoia, stating that there would be an imminent nuclear attack on the United States. After SCP-XXXX-2 ended, D-35743 expired and autopsy results remained inconclusive. Remaining D-class personnel are in therapy.]
SCP-XXXX-3 One VHS tape in almost pristine condition. The only visible label reads “-3”. [Testing was conducted with three D-class personnel. Once inserted into SCP-XXXX, an infomercial for a Cougar 6×6 Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle begins to play. Windows of the vehicle in the infomercial display random numbers from one to thirty, differing between exposed D-class. Notably, instead of a salesman, a man wearing the uniform of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam Special Forces narrates the infomercial in both English and Vietnamese. Testing D-Class expressed acute paranoia not unlike the effects of SCP-XXXX-2, stating fears of an MRAP vehicle "watching" them. After SCP-XXXX-3 ended, D-32731 expired spontaneously while being interviewed, with the autopsy revealing the cause of death to be sudden cardiac arrest due to strenuous exertion. Remaining exposed D-class personnel expired exactly 72 hours after initial exposure.]
SCP-XXXX-4 One extremely-worn VHS tape. Where a label would be is a torn sticky note. [Testing was conducted with three D-class personnel. Once inserted into SCP-XXXX, a series of heavily distorted images and indistinct audio was played. Approximately halfway through the duration of SCP-XXXX-4, all three testing D-Class spontaneously expired, with the autopsy revealing the cause of death to be massive brain haemorrhage.]
SCP-XXXX-5 One extremely-worn VHS tape. The only visible label reads "05AGS". [Testing was conducted with three D-class personnel. Once inserted into SCP-XXXX, a static test card was displayed, while testing D-class personnel reported audio to be of a feminine voice vocalising numbers in a random order, differing between exposed D-class. D-class began vocalising severe panic while SCP-XXXX-5 played, eventually resorting to hostility and attempting to break down the door of the testing chamber. All affected D-class were terminated and SCP-XXXX was retrieved without incident.]
SCP-XXXX-6 One well-worn VHS tape. The only visible label reads "6B". [Testing was conducted with three D-class personnel. Once inserted into SCP-XXXX, an interview with a ]
SCP-XXXX-7 One VHS tape in almost pristine condition. The only visible label reads "#7, Cooking with Mr. S". [Testing was conducted with three D-class personnel. Once inserted into SCP-XXXX, a generic television show featuring Weapons Researcher Samantha Szymons from Site-19 Facility 23 begins to play. The show displays W.R. Szymons explaining the operation of and firing multiple firearms, before going on to talk about several unrelated anecdotal topics. As of yet, no harmful anomalous effects have been observed after viewing SCP-XXXX-7. An average increase in knowledge of firearms among testing D-class is considered to be the only anomalous effect as a direct result of exposure to SCP-XXXX-7. When questioned about the tape, W.R. Szymons denied having ever done anything remotely related to his role in SCP-XXXX-7.]
SCP-XXXX-8 One well-worn VHS tape. The only visible label reads ")8()()". [Testing was conducted with three D-class personnel. Once inserted into SCP-XXXX, a video of a hooded figure standing in front of a wall covered in graffiti begins to play. The figure gives a quick monologue in German, referring to the graffiti behind them at several points. Remote analysis of the graffiti and D-class accounts conclude that it is a dangerous cognitohazard that causes inevitably fatal brain haemmorhage in exposed personnel. All affected D-Class expired before the full duration of SCP-XXXX-8. ]
