Item #: SCP-5312
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5312 is to be stored in a soundproof containment unit, with the walls of the unit being inspected for damage every 2 weeks. SCP-5312 should be sprayed with a solution of water and potassium daily. Any liquid found underneath SCP-5312 should be reported to the site director immediately.
Description: SCP-5312 is a cube of flesh measuring approximately 7.6 cm on all sides. SCP-5312 is smooth, except for a protrusion of flesh resembling an Adam's apple on the top face of the cube. SCP-5312 will begin to 'weep'1 if it is within the sight line of a human. SCP-5312 will not cease weeping until the observer can no longer see SCP-5312, or the observer picks up SCP-5312. When held by the observer, SCP-5312 will produce vocalizations consistent with a human infant expressing happiness. SCP-5312 will continue vocalizing until the observer stops holding SCP-5312. SCP-5312 will then 'weep' again, this time producing a corrosive substance, designated SCP-5312-A that will erode all organic matter within a 1 meter radius of SCP-5312, at a rate of 102 grams per hour. The corrosive substance is chemically identical to human blood, but matches no known human, living or deceased. Due to this chemical similarity, it should be impossible for the substance to corrode organic matter, but extensive testing of SCP-5312-A has shown that it maintains this ability even after removed from the initial effective radius of SCP-5312.
Addendum 1-1: SCP-5312 was located in the abandoned Maternity Ward of St. Mary's Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, after the building was scheduled to be demolished. Construction workers on-site reported hearing babies crying, suspecting it to be 'ghosts'. Foundation personnel implanted in the crew located SCP-5312. Agent Vega initially believed the object to be a lump of rotted flesh discarded at some point during the hospital's operation, but SCP-5312's anomalous properties were observed as soon as Agent Vega placed the flesh in an evidence bag. Agent Vega described an uncontrollable itching, and other personnel backed away when SCP-5312 began producing a massive quantity of SCP-5312-A, which soon overflowed the bag and began dissolving Agent Vega's flesh. The remaining personnel evacuated, and Mobile Task Force Pi-1 ("City Slickers") were dispatched and able to safely contain SCP-5312 and gather samples of SCP-5312-A. Agent Vega was decontaminated and questioned by Dr. Lysander of Site-06-3.Foreword: Dr. Lysander and Agent Vega are seated on opposite sides of a metal table. Vega is nervously tapping his fingers throughout the entire interview.
Agent Vega: Ah, ah…Doc, this really smarts. Anything you can do about this pain before we start this?
Dr. Lysander: My apologies, Agent Vega, but there really isn't anything more we can give you. Need you to be lucid, after all. Now, why did you pick up SCP-5312?
Agent Vega: I couldn't just leave him on the ground like that. He was so upset. I didn't mean to make it worse by picking him up, really, I didn't!
Dr. Lysander: You keep referring to SCP-5312 as 'he'. And you said SCP-5312 was upset, what leads you to believe that?
Agent Vega: Are you serious? I realize most of you guys that are in here all day don't really have, pardon my rudeness, lives outside of research, but even you would pick up a crying baby left all alone, wouldn't you? And you wouldn't call a baby an 'it', either, right?
Dr. Lysander: SCP-5312 is not a baby, and for your information, not that it matters, I do have a life. Actually, compared to you, with no partner and no children, that's rich.
Agent Vega: [Agent Vega loosens his tie and glares at Dr. Lysander.] I don't have kids? Are you serious? Whatever amnestic you gave me, it isn't working how you want it to, clearly. I just saw my son before this interview. And I want to see him again, if you don't mind.
Dr. Lysander: Before this interview, you were at St. Mary's Hospital, retrieving SCP-5312. You picked up SCP-5312 without any protective gear and placed it in an un-sterilized bag and tried to put it in your pocket.
Agent Vega: Yeah, I shouldn't have put him in that. I should've kept in my arms. I knew you'd take him away if I wasn't careful, and that was me trying to be careful. [Agent Vega scratches at the areas where erosion started occurring.] Guess he didn't like that. But, I can't stay mad at the kid. Can I please go now and see him?
Dr. Lysander: No, Agent Vega. I cannot allow you to see SCP-5312, especially as you haven't even undergone proper medical examination-
[Agent Vega gets up from the table and pushes Dr. Lysander off his chair.]
**Agent Vega:* Fine, then I won't ask. I'll just go.
[Dr. Lysander is slightly stunned, and calls for security personnel.]
Closing Statement: Security detained Agent Vega. Dr. Lysander attempted further interviews, but in each interview Agent Vega became more and more aggressive and intent on seeing SCP-5312. In final interview, Agent Vega claimed he could hear SCP-5312 calling out to him as 'papa', despite SCP-5312 being contained far outside human hearing range from the interrogation room. After the interview, Agent Vega was found dead in his own room. Autopsy revealed his internal organs had been completely dissolved by SCP-5312-A.
Addendum 1-2: After the incident with Agent Vega, all personnel interacting with SCP-5312 or its containment unit must be administered Class A amnestics after assignment to prevent attachment with SCP-5312. If any site staff report wanting to see 'their child' despite having no children, they should be detained and questioned to determine their level of interaction with SCP-5312.
Testing of SCP-5312 has established that SCP-5312 is not sentient, and produces vocalizations of a human infant through rudimentary vocal cords located in the growth on SCP-5312's upper face. SCP-5312 is able to digest brain waves in the 'infant alpha' range, and isis able to induce production of these waves in observers without children. Prolonged exposure to SCP-5312 leads to the observer being overwhelmed with a desire to care for SCP-5312. Additionally, SCP-5312 produces a cognitohazarodous effect on observers, causing them to perceive SCP-5312 as a human infant, that resembles the observer's imagined idea of what their biological offspring would look like. The exact method by which SCP-5312 is able to determine what this infant should look like is unknown, but interviews after exposure show this to be consistent in all affected observers.
