Item #: SCP-5780

Object Class: Euclid

petrovasclassroom

Resting place of Professor Natalya Petrova. Foundation researchers are attending a lecture on the evidence of past CK-Class Restructuring Scenarios present in the lexicon and grammar structure of several languages, particularly languages isolates.

Special Containment Procedures: The process by which to access SCP-5780-S is restricted to the Foundation's Department of Unnatural Languages and to senior researchers of key SCP objects. The realization of SCP-5780 is expressly forbidden outside of a completely soundproofed environment, with noise-cancelling equipment being mandatory to all supporting staff and security. Under no circumstances should D-class personnel be taught how to access SCP-5780-S for the purpose of testing, and only Foundation linguists scoring high in standard loyalty tests may be allowed to study any part of the realization of SCP-5780.

Due to both the anomalous nature of SCP-5780-S and the difficulty in naturally producing an instance of SCP-5780, knowledge of it is rare outside of the Foundation. Civilians aware of SCP-5780 in any capacity are to be amnesticized. Any building in which death by SCP-5780 is verified to have occurred is to be soundproofed and sealed off from civilians, and any "haunted house" story arising from the propriety to be suppressed, preventing public interest from gaining traction. Should a death occur outside, a building must be constructed in place to house the vocalization.

tongueplacement

The tongue's apparent shape while realizing necrophoneme ƍ. This is an optical illusion caused by approaching SCP-5780-S.

Description: SCP-5780 is a set of phonemes1 or necrophonemes. Like non-anomalous consonant phonemes, SCP-5780-1 through 32 are realized by the obstruction of the vocal tract by one or more speech organs, and differ amongst themselves mainly by voicing, airstream mechanism and the manner of their articulation2. Unlike non-anomalous phonemes, their place of articulation is an extra-spatial3 speech organ of unknown composition (hereafter referred to as SCP-5780-S), theorized to be present in all human beings. SCP-5780-0 is a vowel produced when the tongue is positioned in SCP-5780-S space.

Utterances which contain a SCP-5780 sound will cause different phenomena to occur to the speaker, the listener, and to the location it was spoken. Both the speaker and any listeners will emaciate rapidly and expire with prolonged exposure, with the rate of this change increasing as more force is put into the enunciation. Death by or during the realization of SCP-5780 will not stop speech or vocalization: a disemboweled voice will appear to echo on the enclosure or proximities of where it is being spoken for an indefinite (whose theoretical upper bound is infinite) period of time, and the voices of deceased listeners may be reported to intermittently sob, laugh or murmur until the main speech concludes. It is theorized that each person's SCP-5780-S is responsible for these events.

As the anomaly is believed to be produced by SCP-5780-S and not from the physical sound generated through it, recordings of live utterances fail to reproduce any of SCP-5780's effects.

SCP-5780-W and SCP-5780-L are described in Addendum 5780-Panini.

Voluntary euthanasia by SCP-5780 is to be permitted for Foundation linguists and senior researchers to study long term exposure to its effects, and Foundation personnel may take one-hour weekly visits to the resting places of these individuals, provided that they receive physical examination and clearance from a Foundation doctor as being fit to do so.

Discovery: The knowledge necessary to realize SCP-5780 was developed by the metaphonetics division of the Department of Unnatural Languages on the aftermath of Incident 5780-A.
