Item #: SCP-5245
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5245 is to be held in a steel lock-box that is held in place by a gyroscopic stabilizer to ensure minimal disturbance to SCP-5245. The object is to be strapped in the lock-box with a steel ring, four inches in diameter, placed over the top of its glass sphere and four straps attached to the steel ring are then to be tied into place to the base of the interior of its steel lock-box. The object is currently held at Site 35. If any movement of the object is necessary, the object must be kept within its lock-box and stabilizer until it reaches its new location. If the object is to be taken out of its lock-box, this is to be done via a set of robotic arms operated remotely, and with a wireless controller.
Description: SCP-5245 is a transparent sphere set on top of what has been determined to be a wooden base made from American Black Cherry wood. The sphere is about 20 cm in diameter and the base meets the sphere 15.5 cm linearly from the top of the sphere and creates a flat surface enclosed by the sphere. Inside the sphere is a clear liquid that fills 98% of the sphere, leaving a small gap between the liquid and the top of the sphere.
The interior of the sphere holds a number of small structures that cover the flat portion inside the sphere. As the structures get closer to the edge of the sphere, they get smaller until they are not discernible. The structures appear to be miniature versions of houses, stores, streetlights, bushes, etc. Covering the streets and buildings is a loose white substance that can freely move when SCP-5245 is disturbed.
Also inside the sphere, closer to the glass, is a sign that says "WELCOME TO MERRYVILLE!" in white lettering. This sign suggests that the name of the town within SCP-5245 is "Merryville" and research has shown that "Merryville" has no real life counterpart, although it shares its name with real locations, such as Merryville, Louisiana in the United States.
To determine the chemical composition of the liquid within the sphere, foundation researchers used a photospectrometer. It was determined that the liquid inside was water with organic material mixed throughout. The chemical composition of the organic material could not be determined. The object has no markings or writing on its exterior that indicate a place of origin or creator.
SCP-5245's anomalous properties are not immediately noticeable, and upon first viewing of the SCP, it appears to be an ordinary snow-globe. SCP-5245's anomalous properties only appear when the loose white substance within the snow-globe is disturbed. When the substance is disturbed and leaves the surface of the buildings or ground, the person who has disturbed SCP-5245 immediately vanishes and SCP-5245 drops to the ground and returns to an inert state. This is to be considered an Alpha-event.
Research has shown that SCP-5245 is photosensitive. The windows on the buildings within 5245 transmit light that is almost inversely proportional to the amount of light the SCP-5245 receives, within 0-1500 Lumens. When 5245 receives no light (0 lumens), almost every window emits light, though each time it is exposed to no light conditions, the windows that don't emit light change. When exposed to 1500 lumens (approximately a 100 Watt lightbulb), almost every window will emit no light, though there are occasional windows that do, but these change each time.
It was also discovered that SCP-5245 emits sound. The sound can only be picked up by a sensitive microphone as the sound ranges from -30 to -10 decibels and is higher pitched than normal human ears can detect. The range of sound coming from SCP-5245 is between 30 kHz and 35 kHZ on average. The sound level varies depending on time of day, but appears to reach a maximum two times in a 24 hour period.
Thorough examination of the object including X-rays and MRI's, researchers have been unable to detect a power source within SCP-5245 and only shows that SCP-5245 appears to be non-anomalous.
Discovery: SCP-5245 was found in an antique shop in ███████, ██ in 19██. It was discovered when a number of people were reported missing after having visited the same antique shop. When police investigated, they discovered that the shop owner, Ms. █████, had reported the missing people simply "vanished" from her store without any signs of ever having been there. Upon hearing about this, the Foundation dispatched multiple agents to the site and took over the investigation under the guise that this disappearances were part of a Federal Investigation of a serial kidnapper.
The agents approached the owner of the store and discovered all of the people who had disappeared had been near SCP-5245 before disappearing. When asked about where it came from, the owner said it had been there since she started working there in 19██. Since then, the original owner passed, and she purchased the shop from the owner's husband, who passed one year later.
The shop was bought by The Foundation with fears that multiple objects within it could harbor anomalous properties. The owner was administered Class A amnestics and moved to ████████, ██. After the shop was cleared of all items and determined to be non-anomalous, it was abandoned and left to the city. Each item within the shop was brought to Site 35 and tested. Only two objects were classified, SCP-████ and SCP-5245, and the rest of the antiques were destroyed.
Moving 5245 to Site 35 proved to be difficult, as any time turbulence or a bump was hit on the way to the site, it resulted in its container and the personnel holding the container to disappear. It wasn't until a gyroscopic stabilizer was used to move the object, that transport to Site 35 could be completed. █ Foundation agents disappeared in the time it took to transport 5245 to the site.
Addendum 1: Upon further researching of SCP-5245's anomalous properties, it was discovered that disturbing at least 2% of the substance within SCP-5245 will result in an Alpha-event; any less than this and 5245 will remain inert.
The results of multiple tests are summarized below:
| Date | DATA | Effects | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| [EXPUNGED] |
D-52451 was told to vigorously shake SCP-5245. D-52451 complied. |
D-52451 disappeared and SCP-5245 fell to the ground. | Not quite sure why we wasted a D-class on that test. -Dr. ██████ |
| [EXPUNGED] |
D-52452 was given a pair of gloves to wear and told to vigorously shake SCP-5245. |
D-52452 disappeared and SCP-5245 fell to the ground. | Clothing appears to not impact 5245's anomalous properties. -Dr. ██████ |
| [EXPUNGED] |
D-52453 was given a pair of gloves to wear and shake SCP-5245 vigorously which had been placed inside of a lock box. |
D-52453 disappeared along with the box containing SCP-5245 and SCP-5245 fell to the ground. | It appears even being in secondary contact with SCP-5245 can cause an Alpha-event. -Dr. ██████ |
| [EXPUNGED] |
D-52454 was given a pair of gloves to wear, along with two trash grabbers modified to hold SCP-5245's lock box and told to vigorously shake 5245 with the trash grabbers while 5245 was in the lock box. |
The trash grabbers and lock box both disappeared, but D-52454 did not. Out of reaction, D-52454 reached out to catch SCP-5245 before it fell and caught it. They then quickly placed it back on the lab table without triggering an Alpha-event. | It appears anything beyond secondary contact with SCP-5245 is safe from an Alpha-event. More research is needed as to why the D-52454 did not disappear after catching SCP-5245. -Dr. ██████ |
| [EXPUNGED] | D-52455 was given no gloves, two trash grabbers modified to hold SCP-5245's lock box and told to vigorously shake 5245 with the trash grabbers while 5245 was in the lock box. Then D-52455 was told what would occur during the test and was told to place SCP-5245 back on the lab table after it fell to the ground. | The trash grabbers and lock box both disappeared, but D-52455 did not. SCP-5245 fell to the ground and landed on its side. When instructed to pick up the SCP, D-52455 refused. After approximately 1 minute of arguing and continued refusal from D-52455, they were threatened with immediate termination. D-52455 then complied and placed SCP-5245 on the lab table. D-52455 disappeared. | Because D-52455 experienced an alpha event where the previous one did not, I suspect there is some form of a "cool-down" period where alpha-events cannot occur. More testing needed. -Dr. ██████ |
| [EXPUNGED] | D-52456 was given no gloves, two trash grabbers modified to hold SCP-5245's lock box and told to vigorously shake 5245 with the trash grabbers while 5245 was in the lock box. Then D-52456 was told what would occur during the test and was told to place SCP-5245 back on the lab table after it fell to the ground. | The trash grabbers and lock box both disappeared, but D-52456 did not. SCP-5245 fell to the ground and landed on its side. When SCP-5245 fell, D-52456 picked it up and placed it on the lab table, bottom down, as instructed. D-52456 did not disappear. | The cool-down period may be connected to relative movement of the object. If true, that would mean the best way of keeping the object safe would mean to not have it being kept completely still, but to keep it constantly shaking. More testing needed. -Dr. ██████ |
| [EXPUNGED] | D-52457 was given no gloves, two trash grabbers modified to hold SCP-5245's lock box and told to vigorously shake 5245 with the trash grabbers while 5245 was in the lock box. After SCP-5245 falls, D-52457 is instructed to quickly pick it up and continuously shake it until told to stop. | The trash grabbers and lock box both disappeared, but D-52457 did not. SCP-5245 fell to the ground and landed on its side. D-52457 picked up SCP-5245 and began shaking it. Shaking continued for 35 minutes until told to stop. D-52457 then placed 5245 on the lab table, bottom down, as instructed. D-52457 did not disappear. | I am now certain that SCP-5245 has a cooldown period connected to its movement. My hypothesis is that the cooldown period is dependent on the movement of the "snow" inside the SCP. More testing needed. -Dr. ██████ |
| [EXPUNGED] | D-52458 was given no gloves, two trash grabbers modified to hold SCP-5245's lock box and told to vigorously shake 5245 with the trash grabbers while 5245 was in the lock box. After SCP-5245 falls, D-52458 is instructed to quickly pick it up and place it on the table. They are then instructed to wait until the "snow" settled, then shake 5245 again. | The trash grabbers and lock box both disappeared, but D-52458 did not. SCP-5245 fell to the ground and landed on its side. D-52458 picked up SCP-5245 and placed it on the lab table, bottom down, as instructed. D-52458 did not disappear. After approximately 15 seconds passed and the snow appeared to have settled, D-52458 shook SCP-5245 and disappeared. | It appears my hypothesis may be correct, that the snow is the trigger for an Alpha-event. I believe that an Alpha-event occurs when the snow is disturbed a certain unknown amount, but until the snow settles back onto the town within the SCP, a separate Alpha-event cannot occur, thus why the continued shaking did not cause an Alpha-event -Dr. ██████ |
| [EXPUNGED] | SCP-5245 was placed on the lab table and D-52459 was told to approach the SCP. D-52459 was instructed to not pick up the SCP, but to grab it with both hands and slowly tilt it to disturb the "snow" within the SCP. | D-52459 tilted SCP-5245 slowly and none of the snow moved until the tilt reached ~5%, but D-52459 did not disappear. Snow continued to be disturbed until an ~30% angle was reached. At that point, D-52459 disappeared and SCP-5245 fell back onto its base. | Reviewing the video footage closely reveals that when D-52459 disappeared, approximately 2% of the snow within the globe had been disturbed. I am considering this the base point for an Alpha-event to occur. -Dr. ██████ |
Addendum 2: Investigation into the results of an Alpha-event were deemed necessary by researchers on SCP-5245's research team. As a result, it was decided to try and track a D-class personnel after they have experienced an Alpha-event.
Before shaking SCP-5245 D-52450 was given a GPS unit to both track and transmit his location, a head mounted camera, and a microphone attached to his jumpsuit.
The following log is of D-52450 personnel's experience of SCP-5245's Alpha-event:
Exploration Video Log Transcript
Date: [EXPUNGED]
Exploration Team: One D-class personnel, D-52450
Subject: SCP-5245 Alpha-event
Team Lead: Dr. ████ ██████
Team Members: Junior Researchers Lee ████████ and Shawn █████
[BEGIN LOG]
Dr. ██████: This is Dr. ████ ██████ with Junior Researchers Lee ████████ and Shawn █████ on SCP-5245's research team. Today we are attempting to track a D-class personnel as they experience an Alpha-event from SCP-5245. Local time is 15:45. D-52450, check-in and rotate to check your camera.
D-52450 Check Doc. You hear me?
D-52450 moves his head from left to right, showing the lab room
Dr. ██████: Check D-52450, we can hear you. Your cameras are operating as they should and we see your current location on the GPS. Please approach SCP-5245 and vigorously shake it.
D-52450 approaches SCP-5245, picks it up, and shakes it vigorously. Camera and audio feed immediately cut out
Dr. ██████: D-52450 check-in.
Silence
Dr. ██████: D-52450 respond, can you hear us? We lost video feed, we can not hear or see you.
For 10 minutes Dr. ██████ and the two Junior Researchers attempt to regain contact by adjusting the audio and visual equipment.
J.R. Lee: Dr. ██████, I can hear something. It's real high pitched so it's hard to hear. Seems like it's in the same range as what we've heard coming from 5245 in the past.
The two Junior Researchers adjust the audio settings until D-52450 can be heard and communications are established between the research team and D-52450.
Dr. ██████: D-52450, it's Dr. ██████, are you there?
D-52450: Doc? Oh thank fuck, I thought I was alone out here.
Dr. ██████: Good to hear from you too. We lost video feed so we thought you might have just up and vanished on us. Where are you? Your GPS still shows you in the lab.
D-52450: No idea. A forest somewhere… I think… but it's kinda… weird.
Dr. ██████: Please describe what you are seeing. We have no video so you're going to need to be our eyes out there. What is it like where you are?
D-52450: I see trees and snow, but none of it is… real I guess. The trees look like painted pieces of wood or plastic and the snow is just some weird white powder. I don't know what it's made of, but it ain't ice. Plus it ain't cold, so real snow would've melted by now.
Uh… other than that, the sky is just kinda… white. Not like clouds, more like if the real sky was white and not blue. It's hard to describe.
My GPS isn't working either, same as what you said, it still says I'm in the lab.
Dr. ██████: Can you start moving forward then? Describe what you see as you walk forward and try to keep a straight path.
A bell is heard ringing four times
D-52450: What the fuck? Doc did you that? Sounded like a bell or something.
Dr. ██████: Yes we heard it. Do you have any idea of where it came from? You might be able to head towards it and figure out where you are.
D-52450: Yeah okay. It sounded like it was coming from where I was headed originally. I'm walking towards it.
Dr. ██████: Good, don't forget to describe what you are seeing as you move. It's vital we get as much information as possible.
D-52450: Yeah yeah, okay. I see trees, snow, the sky. It's still white. The snow is still white, the trees are green. There's more trees, more snow…
This is repeated for 25 minutes
D-52450: more trees… more sky… more… Wait. I see something. It looks like a… streetlight? and a house a little beyond that.
Dr. ██████: Go ahead and slowly approach the house. Describe it for us D-52450.
D-52450: Yeah okay. Well… it's a small house I guess, only 1 story and not very wide or long. Looks like a house I would've drawn back in kindergarten or something. A door, a window, a roof, but nothing else.
Looks like it's made of plastic or something painted to look like a log cabin. The windows are tinted so I can't see inside.
Knocking can be heard
D-52450: Hello? Anyone home?
Dr. ██████: sighs D-52450, please wait for orders before performing any actions. We don't know what could be inside there, and the last thing we need is you going missing in the middle of a mission.
D-52450: Relax Doc, there's nothing out here but trees and snow. Besides, you were going to have me open this thing up anyway.
A drawn out creeking sound can be heard
Dr. ██████: D-52450, please slow down or at least give us fair warning before you do anything you have not been explicitly asked to do. We will not hesitate to terminate you.
D-52450: Fine fine. I opened the door and there's nothing inside. It's empty. Walls and the floor are plain brown.
Dr. ██████: So nothing of note? If you don't see anything, continue on your path. If you saw a streetlight, that would mean there's a street. Try to find it and follow it.
D-52450: Wow Doc, no wonder they gave you a PhD. What an amazing deduction.
Dr. ██████: Just find the road D-52450.
D-52450 located the road and followed it. Along the road were occasional street lights and houses. Upon entering each house, nothing of note was found.
D-52450: Hey Doc, I got a different house. Ya know how the others were really simple? This house is nicer. It's bigger, got more windows, and is painted with more detail. Almost looks like real wood. Oh, and there's more of them up ahead, almost like I'm in an actual neighborhood or something.
Dr. ██████: Open the door D-52450, is the interior any different?
D-52450: Nah, nothing different inside, still plain and open.
Dr. ██████: Then let's assume the same for the rest. Can you continue on? Try and find someone or something that could give you an idea where you are?
D-52450 continued on, describing how the frequency and details of the houses continued to increase as he walked. Eventually he began describing store fronts that advertised selling things like wreaths, wrapping paper, and other holiday themed items, each store being empty inside. After 30 minutes D-52450 came upon an open area.
D-52450: Doc I just passed some stores and I think I'm in a town center or something. It's a bit open and there's a big building with a clock on the front. Kinda reminds me of the building from Back to the Future, ya know?
Dr. ██████: Noted D-52450. Is there anything specific that you can see, anything that can give us a possible location?
D-52450: I don't think so. The clock says its… uh… the big hand is minutes… so 10 till… no wait..
Dr. ██████: D-52450, we can hear you mumbling. Where is the big and small hand?
D-52450: Big hand is almost to the 5, small hand is on the 10. That means its 10 till 5 right?
Dr. ██████: sighs Yes D-52450, it's 17:50 according to the clock. Can you look around and find anything else? It's a town center, there should be a sign, a plaque, something with a location.
D-52450 begins to walk around the town center, stating his observations
D-52450: What the fuck? Who's there? Doc, can you hear this? It sounds like people are talking.
J.R. Shawn: Dr. ██████ I'm starting to get an increase in background noise. I can't make out what it is, but it's definitely getting louder.
Dr. ██████: Yes D-52450, we hear it, can you understand what they're saying? Where is it coming from?
D-52450: I don't know, it's all arou-
A bell is heard, it rings five times and stops
D-52450: Fuckin bell. Like I was saying, the sound is all around me. It's getting loud.
Dr. ██████: That's fine. Just relax and we will worry about it later. For now continue to-
D-52450: What the fuck is that?? Sta- Stay away from me!
Dr. ██████: What is it? What do you see?
Heavy breathing can be heard from D-52450, who sounds like they are running while screaming expletives before tripping and falling. The sounds being to get louder as they seem to get closer to D-52450
D-52450: No! Get the fuck away!! I'll fuckin kill you you fucks!! Let go of me!
Sounds of struggling can be heard
Dr. ██████: D-52450, talk to us! What has you, what can you see! Talk to us damnit!!
D-52450: Get off! I ain't going in there you bastards, fuck you! Let me go or I swear I-
Silence suddenly comes over the microphone
J.R. Lee: Dr. ██████ we've lost GPS signal and audio. I'm still getting background audio from 5245, but nothing from D-52450.
Dr. ██████: Motherfuc… Alright. Ahem. This is Dr. ████ ██████ with Junior Researchers Lee ████████ and Shawn █████ on SCP-5245's research team. It appears we have lost contact with D-52450 approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes after experiencing an Alpha-event. No conclusions can be made at this point and further testing will be needed to determine what exactly is occurring during an Alpha-event.
