SCP-XXXX

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be contained within a room that is at least three(3) metres cubed. It is to be under observation via security camera at all times, with a squadron of Foundation guards ready to act if containment is breached.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a ███████ model ███████ portable cassette player from 198█. SCP-XXXX functions the same as any other tape recorder, except any recorded audio will not be saved. SCP-XXXX’s unique properties begin to manifest however, when the playback button is pressed. When the button is pressed, SCP-XXXX will begin to play audio it which is has heard sometime in the future. It is currently unknown what causes it to play audio from certain times over others. However, it is theorized that SCP-XXXX selects audio based on what will evoke a desired response from the individual who used it, or in some cases, the people overviewing the experiment.

Addendum: SCP-XXXX was first discovered in Tetbury, Gloucestershire following reports of an item that seemed to be behaving strangely. When Foundation agents arrived SCP-XXXX was on display at a local antiques store, and when questioned the owner said that it was constantly playing different things despite the tape inside never having been changed, and that he has no idea why the recordings contained what they did. Foundation agents proceeded to purchase SCP-XXXX for ██████ before administering class A amnestics to the shop owner.

Interviewed: SCP-XXXX

Interviewer: Dr. ███████
Foreword: During this interview, attempts were made to communicate with SCP-XXXX.
<Begin Log>

Dr. ███████: Why do you choose to tell us what you do?

SCP-XXXX: (No verbal communication)

Dr. ███████: Now, it would be best for us both if you did not resist our questioning.
SCP-XXXX: (No verbal communication)
Dr. ███████: If you continue to resist our questioning, you will face further testing, and this time it will be very unpleasant. (Brings out cattle Rod and begins to make menacing gestures with it)

SCP-XXXX: (Playback button clicks, and immediately screams, gunshots and roars begin to emit from SCP-XXXX)
Dr. ███████:(To associates standing nearby) This is very troublesome indeed. Inform ██████ immediately.
SCP-XXXX: (Continues to emit aforementioned sounds)
Dr. ███████: That is enough. You may now cease.
SCP-XXXX: (Playback button clicks again and the sound stops)
<End Log>

Closing Statement: Although attempts to communicate with SCP-XXXX were not successful, Foundation staff were warned of an upcoming containment breach at Site-███. Whether this was a sign that SCP-XXXX wishes to work alongside the Foundation, a threat of what will happen if they threaten it again, or simply a coincidence is currently unknown. Dr. ███████ was reprimanded for threatening SCP-XXXX, and forbidden to partake in SCP interviews and experiments for the next 6 weeks, before being allowed to resume normal duty.

Test A

Subject: SCP-XXXX
Procedure: D-623891, a 38 year old male who was sentenced to death for Arson and the murder of his wife and 2 children was instructed to press the playback button, which they did. SCP-XXXX then began to play the sound of a large fire. After a few seconds the sound of screams began to emerge and D-623891 began sobbing. As the test progressed, the sound of the fire and the screams became louder, and D-623891 began to sob more and more uncontrollably. One(1) minute and thirty seven(37) seconds into the test D-623891 slammed his fist down onto the table SCP-XXXX was resting on and muttered under his breath about how the fire wasn’t his fault, and this had all happened because he owed the local mafia money which he had not payed back. D-623891 then proceeded slam both of his fists against the wall, sobbing once again. At that point D-623891 was removed from SCP-XXXX's cell and administered class B amnestic immediately.
Results: SCP-XXXX played audio which was triggered an emotional response in the test subject to such a large degree the test had to be ended early.
Analysis: From this test it was concluded that SCP-XXXX is able to select audio that is personalized to it’s user, suggesting some level of sentience. Requests for further testing have been accepted, in an effort to find out why it plays what it does.

Test B

Subject: SCP-XXXX
Procedure: Elizabeth Heathley, a 27 year old female was instructed to activate SCP-XXXX and see what the outcome was. Elizabeth has not been convicted of any prior crimes and is instead voluntarily partaking in the testing. The purpose of this test is to see if innocence impacts what SCP-XXXX plays or not. When she pushed the playback button, SCP-XXXX was silent for a few seconds, before a faint voice began to speak. Upon hearing the voice, Elizabeth immediately began to cry, and when asked why she said that the woman speaking was her late mother, who had died of cancer 8 years prior. Foundation researches then asked if she wanted to resume the experiment or not, and Elizabeth proceeded to wipe away her tears and agree to resume the test. The voice of her late mother proceeded to say how she always loved her and says how she knows that she will go far in life, and wishes her great happiness, after which the tape cuts off. In a later interview Elizabeth said that what SCP-XXXX played was the last thing her mother ever said before passing away, and that overall she is happy she got to hear her mother's voice one last time.
Results: SCP-XXXX played sounds which caused an emotional response in subject yet again. However, overall the effect of what SCP-XXXX player was positive.
Analysis: What SCP-XXXX plays may depend on the innocence of its user, although it may also simply desire to evoke a strong response in the user instead.
