The Elevator

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be contained and tested at [DATA EXPUNGED] with no less than four (4) armed personnel with Level 3 clearance, two of which should be positioned on the ground floor of [DATA EXPUNGED] building with the other two on the tenth floor. Anyone who approaches SCP-XXXX should be promptly turned away and ordered to leave the premises, use lethal force only when necessary.

Description: SCP-XXXX appears to be a one (1) year old traction elevator made by [DATA EXPUNGED]. The elevator resides in a half-completed building located at [DATA EXPUNGED]. The building has exactly 10 floors each being 10 feet in height. Upon closer inspection, SCP-XXXX seems to have no discernable differences in manufacturing when compared to other [DATA EXPUNGED] elevators. However, when a user starts on the tenth floor and presses the first-floor button, SCP-XXXX will travel directly to the first floor even when other buttons are pressed mid-journey. During the elevator ride, SCP-XXXX alters the time inside the elevator to extend exactly 100 years. To travelers on the inside of SCP-XXXX during its decent from the tenth floor to the first will experience no need to eat or drink any substances. Those outside of the machine when traveling between the tenth and the first floor will experience no difference in the passage of time (note that the time it takes for the elevator to reach the first floor from the tenth is approximately 19.5 seconds).

Roughly halfway down (50 years into) the elevator shaft, the subject riding SCP-XXXX will have the overwhelming urge to ask a question out loud to the elevator and will instantaneously know the answer to the question asked. Note that all answers given to the subjects have been/appear to be correct.

All subjects who have traveled between the tenth floor and the first have promptly deceased of natural causes and have begun decomposing once the elevator doors open.

Addendum: SCP-XXXX was brought to the Foundations knowledge on 05/██/2012 after a construction worker at [DATA EXPUNGED] tried to use the elevator and discovered a deceased, decomposing white male and immediately called the police. An autopsy report was unable to show the cause of death and revealed that the individual found was [DATA EXPUNGED], one of the workers who installed the elevator. It also revealed that [DATA EXPUNGED] had been decomposing for about 100 years.

Upon discovery on SCP-XXXX’s time-bending qualities due to incident report XXXX-02 all engineers who worked on SCP-XXXX where questioned. When questioned every one of them reported nothing unusual and a polygraph test confirmed their answers, they were given amnestics and allowed to leave.

Experiment XXXX-e-01

Name: Dr. West with Dr. Volkman and Dr. Vosters

Date: 05/██/2012

Procedure: One video recorder is to be placed inside SCP-XXXX in the top right-hand corner facing the elevator doors and two cameras are to be placed on the outside, one X-ray camera, one thermal camera. Both the X-ray camera and thermal camera will be positioned on top of the elevator as it moves down so observation of the interior can be made posable from the outside.

Results: As the first-floor button was pressed by a remote-controlled robot, the interior of SCP-XXXX disappeared from both the X-ray camera and thermal camera, all footage captured from the elevators doors closing to there re-opening upon arrival at ground floor showed that SCP-XXXX’s interior had disappeared completely. Elevator travel time: 19.43 seconds. As for the camera inside SCP-XXXX, all that was retrieved was a 20-minute video before the camera turned off (possibly due to the battery on the camera dying) with absolutely no difference captured throughout the entirety of the ride.

Notes: after reviewing the footage gained from the two outer cameras it appeared that SCP-XXXX’s inside has vanished, possibly teleporting into another dimension or becoming lost in time. As for the interior camera, it was an oversight on our behave to not take into account how much battery is going to be needed.

Experiment XXXX-e-02

Name: Dr. West with Dr. Volkman and Dr. Vosters

Date: 05/██/2012

Procedure: while SCP-XXXX is in motion from floor 10 to floor 1, the power is to be cut off from the elevator. One video recorder is to be placed inside SCP-XXXX in the top right-hand corner facing the elevator doors and two cameras are to be placed on the outside, one X-ray camera, one thermal camera. Both the outside cameras will be put in the same location as they were in Experiment XXXX-e-01. Note that the video camera inside SCP-XXXX will have a much larger battery and 1 petabyte of storage.

Results: As the first-floor button was pressed by a remote-controlled robot, the interior of SCP-XXXX disappeared from both the X-ray camera and thermal camera as it did before in Experiment XXXX-e-01. 3.64 seconds after the elevator doors shut and SCP-XXXX begun its decent all power to the building was cut off. Despite having no power SCP-XXXX still showed up on the first floor. Elevator travel time: 19.72 seconds. Upon retrieving the camera positioned inside of SCP-XXXX, it is discovered that the passage of time inside SCP-XXXX during its descent was exactly 100 years. The camera also showed that despite the power being cut to the building, SCP-XXXX’s overhead lights remained on until the doors were opened where they promptly turned off. Nothing else was captured by the camera during the test.

Notes: It appears that SCP-XXXX can generate its own electricity when necessary. We are concerned that SCP-XXXX may be tampering with the electronics on the inside of the elevator during the ride down, a human trial may need to be conducted.

Experiment XXXX-e-03

Name: Dr. West with Dr. Volkman and Dr. Vosters

Date: 05/██/2012

Procedure: D-class subject is to be placed inside SCP-XXXX along with a lifetime supply of non-perishable food, water, water purifier, no. 2 90 pencils, a pencil sharpener, three notebooks consisting of 300 pages each, a Camera, rechargeable batteries, a solar-powered charger (to be used with the overhead lights), an oxygen generator and a Gameboy (at the request of D-class).

Results: Subject D-74275 (Male, 36, 5 homicides and 3 attempted murders, no discernible mental abnormalities) Is informed of SCP-XXXX and its time-bending properties. D-class is hesitant at first to go into SCP-XXXX but is reminded if he does not comply it would result in termination. As D-class enters the elevator he remarks “see ya in a bit” as the elevator doors close. Elevator travel time: 19.83 seconds. As the doors open D-class is laying deceased in the corner of SCP-XXXX. Autopsy reports show he died of a heart attack and was approximately 87 years old at the time of death. Going through the journals and camera logs it is discovered that D-class was able to forgo without food or water with no ill effects, as a result, subject D-74275 did not produce excrement of any kind, however, D-class still felt the need to sleep. D-Class also mentioned that the vents on the elevator still pumped air into the elevator after SCP-XXXX’s doors closed. D-class included information on his early attempts to escape SCP-XXXX in some of his video logs. Attempts of escape include D-class trying to force SCP-XXXX’s doors open, D-class trying to go through the fire escape, D-class pressing all the buttons in the elevator, D-class trying to unscrew parts of SCP-XXXX off, all attempts of were futile. Along with the escape attempts D-class wrote about how he had no idea how much time has passed, throughout the journal entries D-class’s mental state appears to diminish. D-class also wrote a lot about how he truly felt bad for his victims and wrote long apology letters for his victim's families. See XXXX-J-01 for the full journal entry. The most notable thing found in the journals is toward the end where Subject D-74275 wrote about how he felt like he had to “stand up and ask a question out loud. So I asked if my victim's families could ever forgive me, almost instantly I knew how every one of them would answer”. The subject soon after fell into depression and stopped writing.

Notes: subject appears to have died of natural causes. It is interesting how subject D-74275 was able to survive even though he did not once eat or drink anything, this may back the idea that SCP-XXXX teleports its contents into another dimension. We are curious on why he felt the need to ask the elevator a question and if it is correlated with SCP-XXXX’s abilities as Subject D-74275 was known as being very quiet. It is also puzzling how the subject was unable to escape despite many attempts being made. The theory that SCP-XXXX may be tampering with the electronics on the inside of the elevator during the ride down mentioned in experiment XXXX-e-02 notes seems to have been debunked. Further testing may be required. Please note for future testing we are to add in some way for the subject to tell the passage of time and remove food, water, water purifier, and the oxygen generator.

Experiment XXXX-e-04

Name: Dr. West with Dr. Volkman and Dr. Vosters

Date: 06/██/2012

Procedure: D-class subject is to be placed inside SCP-XXXX along 90 no. 2 pencils, a pencil sharpener, three notebooks consisting of 300 pages each, a Camera, rechargeable batteries, a solar-powered charger, power tools ranging from drills to saws, a solar-powered clock and 5 playboys (at request of D-class). D-class is informed of SCP-XXXX’s properties and is told that he was to attempt to escape with the power tools provided, he was also informed of Subject D-74275’s need to ask a question. Dr. West informs the D-class that if he feels like asking a question out loud ask a question you could never possibly know the answer to.

Results: Subject D-74289 (Male, 25, Arson Murder, no discernible mental abnormalities) enters SCP-XXXX with no resistance. Elevator travel time: 19.79 seconds. As the elevator doors open, D-class found deceased and was sitting upright in the back right-hand corner of SCP-XXXX. Autopsy shows Subject D-74289 died from a blood clot in his heart at age 79. Upon looking at D-class’s journal entries it appears D-class attempted to escape in the same manner as D-74275 and wrote that no matter what he did to the SCP-XXXX nothing would damage it. Exactly 50 years into Experiment XXXX-e-04, according to the time stamp he put at the top of the page, D-class explains he was faced with an overwhelming urge to ask the elevator a question. Remembering what Dr. West told him decades earlier he asked “how do you science?” the journal entries after this event are all about applied physics, molecular structure and theoretical designs for [DATA REDACTED]. See XXXX-J-02 for the full journal entry.

Notes: Subject D-74289 journal entries about being unable to damage SCP-XXXX leads us to believe that SCP-XXXX is indestructible while in its state of departure. does not seem to have suffered from any mental distress and appears to have gained knowledge of everything science related despite having virtually no knowledge of anything in the fields he wrote about prior to the experiment. To be honest, I am quite jealous, his prototype designs for a [DATA REDACTED] is beyond anything I have ever seen before. SCP-XXXX appears to hand out knowledge for any question asked. We have to test the boundaries of SCP-XXXX’s knowledge.

Experiment XXXX-e-05

Name: Dr. West with Dr. Volkman and Dr. Vosters

Date: 06/██/2012

Procedure: D-class subject is to be placed inside SCP-XXXX along with 90 no. 2 pencils, a pencil sharpener, three notebooks consisting of 300 pages each, a Camera, rechargeable batteries, a solar-powered charger, a solar-powered clock and an iPod (at request of D-class) D-class is informed of SCP-XXXX’s abilities and told to ask what happens after death. D-class refuses to go in. D-class is informed that if she does not obey it will result in termination. D-class still refuses to get into SCP-XXXX. D-class is forced into SCP-XXXX and one of the armed personnel presses the first-floor button.

Results: [DATA REDACTED]

Experiment XXXX-e-06

Name: Dr. Williams with Dr. Swift and Dr. Jackson

Date: 08/██/2012

Procedure: D-class subject is to be placed inside SCP-XXXX along with 90 no. 2 pencils, pencil sharpener, three notebooks consisting of 300 pages each, a Camera, rechargeable batteries, a solar-powered charger, a solar-powered clock and art supplies (at request of D-class). D-class is told of SCP-XXXX’s capabilities and is informed to ask SCP-XXXX what it is.

Results: Subject D-74356 (Male, 23, no discernible mental abnormalities) enters SCP-XXXX with no resistance. Elevator ride time: 19.45 seconds. Upon the elevator doors opening Subject D-74356 is found in the center of SCP-XXXX deceased, with his head in a pile of dried up blood. The autopsy report shows that Subject D-74356 died of blunt force trauma to the head at age 73. When going through D-class’s journals, it is found that Subject D-74356 actually enjoyed his time in SCP-XXXX. See XXXX-J-04 for full journal. Upon inspection, it appears that the final video found on the camera shows an older Subject D-74356 ask SCP-XXXX “what are you” at which point Subject D-74356’s face goes blank and Subject D-74356 starts banging his head against the elevator walls until Subject D-74356 falls over and is presumably dead. The video then continues for 50 minutes until the camera’s battery dies.

Notes: D-74356’s reaction to SCP-XXXX’s answer leads us to believe that we are to not question SCP-XXXX. No matter we still have plenty of questions to ask. SCP-XXXX is to be cleaned out before testing continues.

Experiment XXXX-e-07

Name: Dr. Williams with Dr. Swift and Dr. Jackson

Date: 08/██/2012

Procedure: D-class subject is to be placed inside SCP-XXXX 90 no. 2 pencils, pencil sharpener, three notebooks consisting of 300 pages each, a camera, rechargeable batteries, a solar-powered charger, a solar-powered clock and a deck of cards (at request of D-class). D-class is informed of SCP-XXXX’s abilities and is instructed to ask where SCP-XXXX takes its victims.

Results: Subject D-74361 (female, 31, arson murder, no discernable mental abnormalities) enters SCP-XXXX with no resistance. Elevator ride time: 19.67 seconds. Upon the elevator doors opening Subject D-74361 was found deceased, leaning against the middle of the left-hand wall. An autopsy report showed that subject D-74361 had died of a brain tumor on her frontal lobe at age 49. Nothing of interest was found in her journals. See XXXX-J-05 for full journal.

Notes: Subject D-74361 appeared to have a strong family history of cancer, from now on we are only to use subjects that have cleared a health check written by Dr. Swift. A repeat of Experiment XXXX-e-05 is required.

Experiment XXXX-e-08

Name: Dr. Williams with Dr. Swift and Dr. Jackson

Date: 09/██/2012

Procedure: D-class subject is to be placed inside SCP-XXXX 90 no. 2 pencils, pencil sharpener, three notebooks consisting of 300 pages each, a camera, rechargeable batteries, a solar-powered charger, a solar-powered clock, and a Rubix cube (at request of D-class). D-class is informed of SCP-XXXX’s abilities and is instructed to ask where SCP-XXXX takes its victims.

Results: Subject D-74372 (female, 29, no discernable mental abnormalities) enters SCP-XXXX with no resistance. Elevator ride time: 19.37 seconds. Upon the elevator doors opening Subject D-74361 was found deceased, lying in the middle of SCP-XXXX. Along the wall were scribbles of a foreign language that is not archived in our database. Autopsy report shows that Subject D-74372 died in her sleep at age 96. Subject D-74372 journal leading up to year 50 of Experiment XXXX-e-08 shows no deterioration signs of mental health, there is no video log of her asking her designated question. All journal logs that should have taken place after year 50 of Experiment XXXX-e-08 use the foreign characters found on SCP-XXXX’s walls. See XXXX-J-06 for journal.

Notes: Subject D-74372’s mind seemed to have collapsed in on itself after receiving her answer altho we canot confirm whether or not she asked the question we designated her to ask. From now on subjects are to video record themselves at the 50-year mark asking their designated question. Subject D-74372’s reaction to her supposed question brings up a lot of questions and theories from the staff, the most prevalent theory being that the other dimension SCP-XXXX teleports its contents to is obeying a different set of properties and physics than ours, understanding all those properties and physics of that dimension may have broke Subject D-74372’s mind. SCP-XXXX is to be cleaned before testing resumes.

Experiment XXXX-e-09

Name: Dr. Williams with Dr. Swift and Dr. Jackson

Date: 09/██/2012

Procedure: D-class subject is to be placed inside SCP-XXXX 90 no. 2 pencils, pencil sharpener, three notebooks consisting of 300 pages each, a camera, rechargeable batteries, a solar-powered charger, a solar-powered clock, and 5 puzzles, being 1000 pieces each(at request of D-class). D-class is informed of SCP-XXXX’s abilities and is instructed to ask what is the perfect question to ask SCP-XXXX.

Results: Subject D-74389 (male, 28, murder theft, no discernable mental abnormalities) enters with minimal resistance. Elevator ride time: 19.61 seconds. Upon the elevator doors opening Subject D-74389 was found deceased, lying in the front right-hand corner of SCP-XXXX with a no. 2 pencil in his neck. Autopsy report showed that subject D-74389 had died from a stab woound to his temple at age 78. the object that seems to be the cause of injury is one of the pencils given to subject D-74389 before his departure inside of SCP-XXXX. Early journal logs indicate that subject D-74389 spent his time hypothesizing about the answer to his designated question “what is the perfect question to ask SCP-XXXX?”. In later logs leading up to the 50-year mark Subject, D-74389 seemed to have become obsessed with the possible awnsers. The final video log of subject D-74389 shows subject D-74389 asking SCP-XXXX “what is the perfect question to ask in this scenario?” approximately 2 seconds pass before D-74389 starts to laugh he then says “the perfect question to ask, is asking what the perfect question is”. The video ends with subject D-74389’s laughs turning into crying as he ends his video log. See XXXX-J-07 for full journal entry.

Notes: We are surprised at subject D-74389’s reaction to SCP-XXXX’s answer to the designated question for experiment XXXX-e-09. Other than this there is nothing notable about experiment XXXX-e-09. Dr. Jackson does find the answer amusing, however.
