Item #: SCP-4962
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4962 is to be kept in a 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm cube with 2 cm thick walls made of lead for soundproofing. It is strictly forbidden to make any sort of recording either video or audio near SCP-4962 at any moment.
Description: SCP-4962 is a golden pocket watch, hand made circa 1850. The pocket watch is a half hunter with a cover sculpted in the shape of a human rib cage. Individuals used for research on SCP-4962 have stated that the interior face is white, with black numbers highlighted in gold. The hands are also black but it has a red second hand. The watch measures 4.5 cm in diameter (5.5 if you include the winder) and is 1.5 cm thick. It has a gold chain that is 36 cm long but has no fob attached to it.
SCP-4962 was discovered as part of the estate of the last duke of Norfolk when he died in 1989. The family records, kept in Arundel castle in Suffolk, showed that the watch first appeared as part of the family possessions in 1846, acquired by the 13th duke of Norfolk, Henry Arundel, after he fought in France as commander of the Yeoman of the Guard.
Multiple test subjects have been used to interact with the anomaly, resulting in injuries which eventually lead them to death.
It has been declared by the test subjects that once they have viewed the hour that the watch is indicating, they have felt a certain unease and confusion. However, the effects of SCP-4962 seem to evolve rather slowly, since every subject has been found deceased from 20 to 42 hours after the anomaly’s sighting.
Once an individual is under SCP-4962’s effects, it will suffer a long painful process which includes hair loss, irritation, disorientation and finally mental-related issues causing the death of the subject. Any subjects that have triggered SCP-4962’s effects are to be designated as SCP-4962-1.
It is said that the ticking sound of SCP-4962 may cause paranoia or even lead to insanity if exposed to the sound for too long.
Addendum 4962-1: First interaction
D-3931 was instructed to interact with SCP-4962 to prove and research it’s anomalous effects, the following interview was conducted very shortly after the event.
Interviewer: Dr. █████
Interviewed: SCP-4962-1
<Begin Log>SCP-4962-1: Was that it? Just looking at a watch?
Dr. █████: How are you feeling, D-3931?
SCP-4962-1: I’m alright..I guess? Who are you?
Dr. █████: My name is Dr. █████ ███████, I have a few questions for you.
SCP-4962-1: Okay..go ahead.
Dr. █████: Good. So, this watch you’re talking about. Could you describe it to us?
SCP-4962-1: Yeah…well, I dunno. It looked like a normal pocket watch to me. It’s old too, you can see that right off.
Dr. █████: Could you give us more details?
SCP-4962-1: Alright uh, it was like..golden, and it had some design on it’s cover, like a rib cage.
Dr. █████: Perhaps you could tell us more about the interior of the watch?
SCP-4962-1: Oh, yeah for sure. It had a white face, with some..black fancy numbers. There was a maker’s name, but I can’t recall it. The cover on the inside was plain, with no photo or anything.
Dr. █████: What time was the watch indicating?
SCP-4962-1: (Pauses) I..can’t remember…
Dr. █████: I see. Anything else to point out?
SCP-4962-1: I don’t know man..it gave me chills, like bad ones. Can I go back to my cell?
Dr. █████: Not yet, we’ve still got a few more things to check out.
<End Log>
Addendum 4962-2: Complication
D-3931, now designated as SCP-4962-1, demanded to have another interview with Dr. █████. Strange behaviour had been noticed in the previous hours before the interview was granted.
Interviewer: Dr. █████
Interviewed: SCP-4962-1
<Begin Log>
SCP-4962-1: (Loud breathing) What…have you done to me…
Dr. █████: Could you please-
SCP-4962-1: (Interrupting, angrily) Answer my question!
Dr. █████: D-3931, calm down. We haven’t done anything to you.
SCP-4962-1: (Nervously scratching the back of his head) What’s happening to me…you’ve done this, don’t lie!
Dr. █████: If you do not lower your tone, I will request your immediate detention.
SCP-4962-1: (Takes a deep breath) I don’t know why this is happening…please…help me.
Dr. █████: Tell us how you feel, and we may be able to help.
SCP-4962-1: My mouth is dry…my head’s spinning..my damn hair is falling off!
Dr. █████: When did all these symptoms begin?
SCP-4962-1: About three hours after the interview…
Dr. █████: And, how do you think we could help you?
SCP-4962-1: You said you were a doctor…do something..
Dr. █████: What, like a treatment?
(There's a moment of silence)
Dr. █████: Okay, we will-
SCP-4962-1: (Incomprehensible)
Dr. █████: Pardon?
SCP-4962-1: (Sobbing loudly) I’m..dying.
<End Log>
Addendum 4962-3: Deceased
SCP-4962-1 passed away 29 hours after it’s interaction with SCP-4962. The results indicated that the cause of death was a failure in the subject’s central nervous system.
