The Judgement of Hammurabi
rating: 0+x

Item Number: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Containment Site 42 has been constructed around SCP-XXXX. Site 42 is located in between twin summits known as the Atna Peaks of eastern Alaska. Current containment site encompasses these twin peaks as well as the adjacent mountains of Mount Blackburn and Parka Peak. SCP-XXXX's docket is to be examined every 24 hours, and the names and crimes of one (1) three (3) D-Class personnel are to be moved to the top of the docket. The judgement area of the Court is to be monitored at all times by 2 (two) standard security cameras. In the event that any being(s) appear in the judgement area outside of normal containment or testing scenarios, human or otherwise, MTF unit Sigma-Contra-5 is to be deployed immediately to extract the subject and, depending on the subject's nature, either contain or administer Class-A amnestetics prior to relocation of the subject. The personnel in charge of altering SCP-XXXX's docket will then be subject to questioning and likely disciplinary action. Any abnormalities deemed outside of personnel error are to be documented and studied by assigned Research Team 909.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a court of six human entities of Mesopotamian origin. Each entity stands on one of six stone spires surrounding a large metal platform suspended over a pit determined to be exactly 3.25 km deep and 15.24 meters wide by four chains. Both the platform and the chains are made of an unidentified alloy. Embedded in each of the stone spires is a plaque reading the judges' names, translating to whatever language the reader uses most1 Listed in a clockwise circle, SCP-XXXX-1's plaque reads, "Musharaf-The Overseer". SCP-XXXX-2 is "Aitiham-The Indictment." SCP-XXXX-3 is "Alassile-The Questions". SCP-XXXX-4 is "Alastadaa-The Summons." SCP-XXXX-5 is "Eiqab-The Punishment." SCP-XXXX-6 is "Katib-The Scribe."

The Court has in its possession a docket containing the names and crimes of every human being on Earth, numerous SCPs, including SCP-073, SCP-076, SCP-096, and SCP-082, and several names in languages that the Foundation has yet to decipher. This list is kept in a translucent container 50(fifty) meters tall in-between the spires inhabited by Alassile and Alastadaa. If left on their own, the entities have been observed reading the docket before calling the name of the first person on it. When called, the person will invariably disappear from their current location and reappear in the middle of the metal platform before the court. When the court "judges" the summoned subject, a punishment deemed appropriate by the entities will be enacted instantly by two other entities known as "The King's Hands" as announced by the judges during observation. The subject will then disappear once again and reappear back where they were before they were summoned.

The court functions solely on the concepts of The Code of Hammurabi,2 and any subjects who are called before the court are judged by this system. The judges have adapted somewhat to the standard American legal system, applying the Code's standards to a setting akin to the United States Supreme Court. The methods of judgement, however, are no different from those used in the time period the Code was relevant.

Testing has shown that, while all of the judges work together, each has a primary section of proceedings that they alone oversee. For example, Musharaf seems to be the general overseer of the court, while Aitiham gives indictment, Alassile establishes guilt, etc.

Observation Log XXXX-A: 4/9/████ Subject: D-45934 Procedure: Researcher Johnston adjusted SCP-XXXX's docket on schedule. Standard procedures continued under observation and documentation from Research Team 909. Result: D-45934 appeared immediately when summoned. Aitiham spoke first, informing the subject of his "crimes", involving the aggravated assault of several people, resulting in one man having a broken collarbone. Alassile then asked the subject several questions, most of which boiled down to the singular inquiry of whether or not the subject would admit he committed the crime. D-45934 answered affirmatively to the accusation. Musharaf then tapped his gavel, seemingly a cue to Eiqab, who said, "The King's Hands come forth." Immediately, two more entities appeared from either side of Musharaf's spire. One restrained the subject while the other broke the subject's left clavicle.3 "The King's Hands" then promptly released the subject and retreated behind Musharaf's spire. Alastadaa then adjourned the court, causing the subject to vanish back to his cell Analysis: While no fundamentally different from other observations of SCP-XXXX's procedures, this was the first documented instance of a D-Class being judged that the Court did not subject to simple monetary fines. This proves the court's rooting in the Code of Hammurabi. Research Team 909's study of the Code of Hammurabi itself is ongoing in an attempt to delegate any and all testing to subjects who have only committed crimes Hammurabi deemed unworthy of capital punishment.
Observation Log XXXX-B: 5/10/████ Subject: D-86934 Procedure: Docket adjusted as usual, D-86934 was with the Foundation for fratricide. Result: Subject appeared immediately when summoned. Proceedings continued without significant changes to the formula observed in previous observations until Eiqab summoned The King's Hands, one of whom restrained the subject while the other drew a knife observed to be approximately 0.3 meters in length and horizontally sliced the subject's throat. Subject expired thirty-five (35) seconds later. The Court then adjouned and, for the first observed time, the center of the metal dias split open, akin to a trapdoor, causing the subject's corpse to fall to the bottom of the pit below. Analysis: This was the first observed instance where a subject was put to death. Investigation of the pit below the metal dias has shown no evidence of remains at the bottom. Further research is ongoing to determine if this is simply the effect of the corpses teleporting to their pre-judgement locations or another unknown facet of the entities' procedures.

Addendum: 06/13/████:
Additional observations of SCP-XXXX have led researchers to believe that Katib, the Scribe, has transcriptions of most if not all of SCP-XXXX's past proceedings. Viewing and documentation of these records is to be a distinct priority in an attempt to further understand the entities.

Interview Log: 7/2/████

Interviewer: Dr. Richard Azlo

Interviewee(s): SCP-XXXX members
Foreward: All six of the SCP-XXXX entities seemed very enthusiastic to meet with Dr. Azlo. Research Team 909 reviewed their research and documentation in order to create a concise questionnaire for SCP-XXXX-1-6 that would summarize and fill the holes in their reports. All of the entities will be referred to by the names on their respective plaques.
Begin Log:

Dr. Alzo: Good afternoon. I am Dr. Richard Alzo. I've got a series of questions here from our Research Team that they'd like you to answer. Please, have a seat.
Musharaf: Good afternoon to you, Doctor. I speak for us all when I say it is a distinct pleasure to meet with an intellectual of the Foundation such as yourself.
Dr. Alzo: Why…thank you. I appreciate that. Anyway, what say we get started?
Musharaf: Yes, at once.

Dr. Alzo: First off, we have observed, as you yourselves have stated many times, that you operate under the Code of Hammurabi. Yet, your court and proceedings seem to…vary, from the way the original Code has proceedings outlined. Why is that, and what changes have been made from the original way things were done?
Musharaf: Well, look at where we are. The United States, is it not? Quite the efficient example. Yes, we do work by the Code, but times change, cultures change. If I alone were to serve Marduk's4 will in judgement now as Hammurabi did, I wouldn't get halfway down the punishment docket before the heat death of the universe. Adaption is a factor in existence, and we are no exception. The main differences between the old ways and how we operate now are simple, such as our court expanding from one to six, and the implementation of a questioning period, which King Hammurabi did not do. We use this primarily to hear from the guilty party before Eiqab punishes them.
Dr. Alzo: Alright, then. Our next question is, you've watched us editing your docket per our procedures for several months now. Are we not interfering with your proceedings, or "Marduk's Will" as you put it? Why not stop us?
Musharaf: Our goal, as laid out by King Hammurabi, was to…oh how did He word it…Katib?
Katib: He said, "Hear Marduk's Will. I have interpreted. I have written. I have commanded. Go forth, my selected, and enact."
Musharaf: Thank you, Katib. My mind sometimes muddles the ancient ages. Doctor, my point is, to put in layman's terms, no matter how you alter the order of our proceedings, we are still enacting the will of our king. We are still judging. If prioritizing some over others makes you feel safe, we have no reason to stop you. You do not impede us.
Dr. Alzo: Well, then…(mutters) That's comforting… (Normal volume) The next question on our agenda is for Katib. We have reason to believe that you, as the "Scribe," have documentation and records of all of all of your previous proceedings. Would you be willing to share those with us?
Katib: No…no, I am sorry, Doctor, but my records span millennia and I am not keen on revealing the intricacies of Marduk's will to those not dictated to understand it.
Dr. Alzo: Fair enough…Lastly, what would you define as "crimes"? What about the cookie I stole from my mother's cookie jar when I was five? Would I be judged for that? Secondly, on that topic, what of crimes committed by children? Has your cultural appropriation changed how such cases are handled?
Alastadaa: (Stands and yells) How dare you, sir, insinuate-
Musharaf: (Turns to Alastadaa) Alastadaa! Calm yourself. A question born of ignorance is…(sighs) (Turns back to Dr. Alzo,) To answer, we only operate on the established code dictated by Hammurabi when it comes to determining the validity of a crime. If your mother were to bring a matter of a cookie as thievery to the attention of the court, we would try it as such, which brings me to my next point: As for children, I will refer back to Alastadaa- How dare you. Children are sacred, and only when they become men are they judged for any childhood wrongdoings. We are not monsters.
Dr. Alzo: I…I apologize. We simply wish to understand.
Musharaf: Perhaps you should choose your words more wisely when speaking to divine instruments of Marduk and King Hammurabi. We do not take kindly to insolent ramblings and loaded accusations.
Dr. Alzo: Alright, I think that's enough. Thank you for your time.
End Log
Closing Statement: The entities of SCP-XXXX became increasingly agitated as Dr. Alzo continued the questionnaire, especially concerning questions around topics of moral ambiguity or a misinterpretation of either their methods or the original Code of Hammurabi. After the interview concluded, the members of SCP-XXXX threatened to bar access to their docket, effectively rendering containment procedures useless, as well as issuing threats against Dr. Alzo to forgo their docket and issue him immediate judgement for both "offense of the court and implication in the imprisonment of fellow humans." The second charge is assumed to refer to D-Class personnel. It is unknown if the entities can indeed simply ignore their docket and summon whomever they wish. Site Director Stevens had Dr. Alzo removed from the scene and calmly expressed his deepest apologies to the entities. They appeared to calm down and thanked Director Stevens before returning to their courtroom.

Addendum: 7/13/████-
Although appearing cordial after the conclusion of Research Team 909's interview, SCP-XXXX immediately raised the quantity of the daily judged subjects by 2 (two). This change resulted in one civilian from the Ukraine, who had denounced his adoptive parents, having his tongue removed by The King's Hands. MTF Unit Sigma-Contra-5 was able to extract the second individual, a woman from the United Kingdom who had committed incest, before she could be burned as per Eiqab's proclamation. Site 42 was subsequently placed on high alert. Research Team 909 confirmed that personnel access was still allowed to the docket, and further observations have made it clear that the entities intend to perform three trials per day for the foreseeable future. Containment procedures have been edited to reflect this.
