SCP-XXXX

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a secure annealed glass container within a standard soundproofed object containment room at Site-86 for preliminary research, not to be removed from such or connected to any on-site landline outside of testing. Research personnel showcasing signs of mental afflictions not previously recorded is to be assessed under psychiatric consultation by an approved psychiatrist and be severely reprimanded for unauthorized usage of SCP-XXXX. Once the aforementioned preliminary research is concluded, SCP-XXXX is to be moved to Site-44, becoming its permanent containment location.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an Ericsson DBH 1001 model rotary dial telephone, or more often referred to as a Bakelite phone. It is black in color, lacking the presence of any model branding or a serial number. Despite appearing to be well preserved and completely functional, all attempts to use SCP-XXXX to contact other phones have concluded with failure.

SCP-XXXX begins to exhibit anomalous properties only on the last Tuesday of every month of the year, lasting from the hours of ██:██ to ██:██.1 If any individual enters within a 4.6m radius of SCP-XXXX during this allotted time frame, SCP-XXXX will start to ring. This ringing will occur under most circumstances, and attempts to block this call through the use of a Faraday cage or similar methods have proven unsuccessful, but the placement of structural or natural obstacles between the subject and SCP-XXXX has been documented to prevent this occurrence. Subjects who enter within this radius and hear the ringing do not report any urge to answer, though some individuals who trigger this ringing event have reported a noticeable curiosity as to who might be calling. Once answering SCP-XXXX, however, subjects report difficulty with efforts made to end the call prematurely at any given time, commonly recounting a strong compulsion to continue despite any previous mindset. This compulsion will generally go unnoticed unless such efforts are enacted, and it has been noted possible to overcome in life-threatening situations or similar circumstances.

If an individual answers SCP-XXXX, they are greeted by SCP-XXXX-1 on the other end of the line. SCP-XXXX-1 has been described as the voice of a middle-aged woman with a Swedish accent and notably is always fluent in the native language of the subject answering SCP-XXXX. Attempts to trace the call or determine SCP-XXXX-1's location have proven unsuccessful.2

Upon answering, SCP-XXXX-1 will ask for a name,3 SCP-XXXX-1 will most frequently ask for a name, inherently the name of any individual. If the subject states their own name, the name of a fictional individual, or no name at all, SCP-XXXX will immediately disconnect from the call and cannot be used again until the next allotted time frame. Upon naming an individual, SCP-XXXX-1 will briefly pause. During this time, lasting for a range from 15 to 27 seconds, the sound of ringing can be heard on the line.

After this period, the voice of the named individual can be heard, hereby designated as SCP-XXXX-2. SCP-XXXX-2 instances appear sentient, though generally display an unawareness of the subject, reacting only to occurrences in their proximity, but awareness of the subject has been recorded in select calls. SCP-XXXX-2 instances are audibly recorded enacting in events that each lead to the instance's death, examples including suicides and murders. Once an instance's death takes place, the call is immediately terminated. Named individuals apparently killed during an SCP-XXXX call have been found alive and uninjured, reporting no recollection of the call or its events taking place. If a deceased individual is named, similar circumstances occur, with SCP-XXXX-2 instances mimicking the individual. However, these instances are recorded dying in depicted situations similar to the named individual's death, but with noticeable differences to the real-life event.

Subjects have been documented suffering from metal illness and psychological trauma after the conclusion of a call, with psychiatric evaluations diagnosing disorders such as major depression and general anxiety. These newly developed afflictions are generally treatable depending on the affliction, and the development of physical illnesses has not been recorded. Such afflictions have only been reported affecting individuals answering SCP-XXXX, with those listening to calls indirectly through wiretap surveillance or similar methods have proven unaffected.

Addendum XXXX-A: SCP-XXXX was recovered on ██/██/2017 from an antique shop in █████████, Indiana. Upon receiving an abnormal number of reports of post traumatic stress and neurasthenia from ██ ███████ Hospital, Agents ██████ and █████ were authorized to investigate. Questioning reported individuals and doctoral staff led to a coinciding reference to a "haunted telephone," inherently located within ████████ Antiques. Reportedly, the owner had no prior knowledge of the object, stating they were unaware of its presence in their store. Agent ██████ purchased SCP-XXXX upon discovery and Class-A amnestics were properly administered.

Addendum XXXX-B: Alongside SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 instances, a third unique entity has been documented. This entity has only been recorded being present in a single documented call and further instances of this entity are yet to be discovered. Due to it's lacking presence across disparate calls, the designation of this entity is still under investigation alongside any possible anomalous properties it may possess. Until authorization from personnel with Level 4 clearance or higher is given, this entity shall be improperly referred to as SCP-XXXX-3 for the sake of accessibility. See Test-XXXX-D for SCP-XXXX-3's first and only recorded documentation.
