Special Containment Procedures: A 40-km2 region around SCP-5000 has been designated as Provisional Site-5000 and restricted from public access under the guise of a hazardous waste cleanup site containing dangerous quantities of 137Ce and 90Sr. To this extent, samples of these isotopes sufficient to affect readings by gamma-sensitive instruments have been planted throughout the central area, in particular over SCP-5000-A. Any intruding civilians are to be turned back with a minimum of necessary force. If any unauthorized personnel discovers an entrance to SCP-5000-D or witnesses Foundation operations, they are to be amnesticized and returned to the outside of the containment area. In the event of an SCP-5000 activation creating a gamma ray pulse of sufficient intensity to be detected by gamma-sensitive orbiting satellites1, Foundation plants within relevant agencies are to falsify and destroy data as necessary to prevent discovery of SCP-5000 by non-Foundation assets.
Researchers and an immediate eight-person squad from Mobile Task Force Lambda-3 “Ellis Captains"2 are quartered within SCP-5000-D. Additional security personnel are stationed at covert locations around the restricted area as necessary to prevent intrusion and provide emergency assistance to onsite members of MTF Lambda-3 in the event of a security breach.
For the purposes of informational security, a TEMPEST-certified Faraday shield has been constructed surrounding SCP-5000-D that is capable of blocking radio and microwave transmissions into and out of SCP-5000-D, with a backup system composed of six high-powered jamming devices positioned around the site, each capable of interfering with transmissions on all currently-used radio and microwave communications frequencies. Both systems are to undergo maintenance once every thirty days, with additional full maintenance no more than one day and no less than ninety minutes prior to arrival of SCP-5000-2 onsite. If any problem or vulnerability in the Faraday shielding is detected that cannot be corrected prior to arrival of SCP-5000-2, the backup jamming system is to be engaged and the duration of SCP-5000-2 presence at Site-5000 is to be minimized.
Provisional Site-5000 staff are to refrain from interacting with SCP-5000-1 when not operating SCP-5000. Following the events detailed in Recovery Log 5000-Beta, contact has been established with a group of mechanical constructs designated here as SCP-5000-2, using the 5000 Contact Group as the focus for communications. Information exchange between parties is authorized on a case-by-case basis by the O5 Council. When SCP-5000-2 are present at Provisional Site-5000, all remote-communication systems onsite are to be deactivated and any contact with other personnel must occur offsite. At no time may accurate astronomical data be stored in or transmitted to any device within Provisional Site-5000, regardless of presence of SCP-5000-2.
In the event of SCP-5000-2 being exposed to the global Internet, any necessary steps are to be taken to shut down Internet activity in all compromised areas and to quarantine Foundation networks. Following connection cutoff, all Internet traffic is to be monitored for security breaches that may have been caused by SCP-5000-2-created spyware and activity of SCP-5000-2 intelligences. Additionally, development of malware capable of infecting SCP-5000-2 is a Class-4 priority to ensure a defense in the event of overt hostility by SCP-5000-2.
If SCP-5000-2 begin overt hostility and attempt to pass through SCP-5000 without Foundation authorization or immediately-declared justification, Protocol Neutron Iris is to be executed. For additional information on Protocol Neutron Iris, please contact the Site Director.
Description:
SCP-5000 is a designation for a technologically-advanced device and a surrounding facility that acts as a faster-than-light transportation system between itself and several matching devices in a minimum of 3 extrasolar locations.
SCP-5000-A is a metallic device consisting of two 0.92-meter-thick perpendicularly-intersecting vectical rings 9.10 meters in diameter, with a 0.84-meter-wide gap at the top, where a 3.89-meter-tall prong extends upward from each ring. Each prong is connected to the others via superconducting rings, powerful magnets, and cyclotron rings. In the exact center of the rings, suspended by thin struts, is a 2.21-meter globe made of an unknown substance with a refractive index matching that of diamond but anomalous durability, corrosion resistance, and extremely low thermal conductivity. Within the globe is a spherical luminous object that emits intense radiation in the optical and ultraviolet frequencies.
When SCP-5000 is activated, a highly collimated stream of exotic plasma is emitted directly upward from the object, passing through the globe and being focused or otherwise modified by the components mounted on the upper prongs before abruptly stopping 13 meters above the globe and forcing open a SS23 spacetime anomaly level with the upper walkway.
The assembly is located at the bottom of a shaft 20 meters in diameter and 30 meters in height, with the top of the shaft being approximately 4 meters under the surface of the ground. A metallic walkway 2.34 meters in width encircles the entire chamber at a height of 18.7 meters from the base.
SCP-5000-B is a facility with five total stories and three main stories of approximately 105,600 square meters built around SCP-5000-A’s chamber, which spans from the top of the facility to the bottom. The three central stories, numbered downwards, are closest to ground level and positioned around the top of SCP-5000-A’s chamber.
The first story incorporates residences and accommodations for a permanent staff of 15 people and a temporary staff of up to 40. It is accessible via two camouflaged access points on the surface.
The second story is primarily one large room with several smaller rooms located on the side furthest from SCP-5000-A. The second story’s main room houses hundreds of devices comparable to data storages and computers. While its exact purpose is unknown, it is believed to serve a role similar to that of a modern server room. Unlike the other stories, which experience temperature fluctuations between 16 and 25º C, the second story is kept at a consistent 21º C by the automated heating and cooling systems, and is lined by Faraday shielding similar to what has been constructed around SCP-5000-B in its entirety. A radiation-shielded vault on the second story contains ███ kilograms of plutonium-242 and subsequent decay products, which allows for a mostly accurate measure of SCP-5000’s age at upwards of 75,000 years. In spite of this age, SCP-5000-B is entirely free of dust or any notable wear and tear.
The third story is the main “operations center” for SCP-5000, including access to SCP-5000-A’s chamber and computer interfaces for the activation and control of SCP-5000. All significant facilities on this story are directly dedicated to operation of SCP-5000 or systems throughout SCP-5000-B.
The lower two stories are much smaller than the main three, composed of mostly maintenance tunnels and serving as a means of directly accessing SCP-5000-A at the bottom of its chamber.
SCP-5000-1 are distinct sapient, holographic entities claiming to be the facility’s past crew members. While all instances display significant data corruption such as static in place of all facial features, distorted voices and bodies, and severe memory loss, up to 34 distinct instances have been identified. 28 of the instances are known to be “selectively tangible”, allowing them to either pass through objects and personnel with no difficulty or physically interact with them as necessary. All instances are fluent in a language closely resembling a corrupted dialect of Hindustani, which allows for direct communication with similarly fluent personnel. SCP-5000-1 are most common on the third story, but often pace between the devices on the second story and will sometimes visit the first story to perform maintenance. When SCP-5000 is active, SCP-5000-1 will be exclusively present on the third floor and are capable of operating it with considerably greater efficiency and skill than Foundation personnel have been capable of.
SCP-5000-2 are robotic entities present in some regions accessible via SCP-5000, although their current point of origin is unknown. Standard instances of SCP-5000-2 possess roughly human proportions, standing fully erect at a height of 2.23 meters. Each has two mobile legs similar to human legs, but with a 210º rotation range at the “knee”, and a third stabilizing leg that can be deployed from the instance’s back in order to increase stability while stationary. All legs terminate in a foot with two articulated forward appendage “toes” and one articulated rearward “toe”. Most instances possess two arms comparable in reach and dexterity to human arms, but eight-fingered symmetrical hands that can rotate finger position for versatile grip. However, several instances have been observed with arms terminating in directed-energy weaponry, holographic projectors, or specialized connection ports. Cameras and microphones are built into the top and sides of their heads, as well as the center of the chest. SCP-5000-2 do not have faces but rather holographic projectors and speakers mounted on the front of their heads that allow display of text, photos/videos, speech, audio playback, and 3-D projections.
As of three days after Incident 15/03/██, SCP-5000-2 are capable of communicating in English, Russian, Arabic, Hindustani, Spanish, and Mandarin. Each instance is extremely intelligent and while SCP-5000-2 do not display a hive mind, they rapidly share information between each other. SCP-5000-2 possess technology and computational power far in advance of the Foundation’s and Foundation AIACs, and may have developed a means to interact with wireless communication systems. Presently, SCP-5000-2 are cooperative and largely sympathetic with the Foundation.
Exploration of locations accessible via SCP-5000 is underway postponed indefinitely.
Addendum 5000-A1: Accessible Regions
| Designation | Distance | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Accessible Region Alpha | 7,264 parsecs/23,680 light years | An abandoned facility similar to SCP-5000-B. The entire region displays moderate to severe reality warping and degradation, making further exploration dangerous. No further visits are authorized. |
| Accessible Region Beta | 12,254 parsecs/39,948 light years | A location within the ruins of a mostly-destroyed city. Unlike Accessible Region Alpha, Accessible Region Beta contains significant quantities of viable information and potentially retrievable artifacts. For unknown reasons, drones are unable to operate. Most of the region displays reality warping and degradation on a far lesser scale than Accessible Region Alpha, limited mostly to corruption of objects or information and some spatiotemporal anomalies. Both flora and fauna are present, and the fauna pose a significant threat to insufficiently-armed explorers. No attempts are to be made to recover lost personnel. Further exploration on hold. |
| Accessible Region Gamma | 24,105 parsecs/78,581 light years | The interior of a sizeable facility actively inhabited by SCP-5000-2. Accessible Region Gamma is unique in that it is free of any reality degradation, likely due to SCP-5000-2, which employ the facility to connect to all instances of SCP-5000 within the Milky Way Galaxy. Standard exploration is not possible due to the presence of SCP-5000-2, but Foundation personnel have been able to tour several large areas during visits. |
Addendum 5000-A2
An initial test of SCP-5000’s functions resulted in the creation of a stable wormhole aperture to an empty facility similar in appearance to SCP-5000-B. SCP-5000-1 instances, when questioned about the accessible area, claimed it was a matching facility 23,680 light-years away. The area remained unexplored until a suitable drone was supplied to Provision Site-5000.
