Item #: SCP-3961

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: The area in which SCP-3961 occupies is lined with a dense, kevlar reinforced fishing net with an area of 50mx50m, breaking into replacable sections every 5m. This requires daily inspections to check for any damage, and damaged sections must be replaced accordingly, no matter how minor. Any egg sacs produced by SCP-3961 are to be collected and destroyed via incineration immediately.

Under no circumstances are any samples of SCP-3961-2 to be transported off-site for any reason. Any Foundation personnel attempting to do so will be detained and taking in for questioning. Collected samples of SCP-3961-2 are not to exceed 150ml. Samples of SCP-3961-2 are to be collected via mechanical arm holding a ceramic cup, held with a wet rag soaked with seawater. Samples of SCP-3961-2 are not to be handled regardless of clearance, unless permitted by Foundation higherups for regularly scheduled testing. Testing chambers are 5mx5mx5m lined with ceramic tile on all surfaces with wireless security cameras for observation.

All naval traffic is to be directed away from Site [REDACTED], and any unauthorized vehicles that travel within 2.5km will be set upon by Foundation personnel. Any individuals aboard are to be taken in for questioning, and any hostile action is to be met with lethal force. Particularly problematic resistance will be dealt with utilizing long-range cannon fire.

Description: SCP-3961 is a completely black organism, similar in biology to a jellyfish, that has no texture or shine, giving it the appearance of a black void. This creature resides in a nest 108m in diameter, approximately 1.2km below the surface of the continental shelf, with a long, thin tunnel that leads up to the ocean floor, where it allows it's tentacles to flow freely. Each tentacle constantly secretes a poisonous, black liquid (designated as SCP-3961-2), which it uses to trap and consume prey. This liquid begins to dissipate after twenty-four minutes if it is not in contact with SCP-3961. SCP-3961 has been dubbed, "Medusa's Black Crown," by on-site Class-D Personnel.

It was first discovered on █/ ██/██ after an oil rig off the coast of [REDACTED], completely vanished overnight, along with it's entire crew. Foundation personnel that caught wind of the event and investigated it's location discovered two survivors, who stated that the 'oil' began covering the entire platform, and anything attached to it, then started to break it down and consume it.

SCP-3961-2 will spread to whatever it comes into contact with, and will begin to engulf it at a rate of 2.46 cm/s, until the object is fully covered. SCP-3961-2 then begins converting the object into it's chemical structure and adds it to it's mass. While submerged, SCP-3961-2 will attempt to drift towards anything in a 30-meter radius from it's epicenter, but does not extend beyond this range. It can gain nourishment from nearly any material, whether it's organic or not. Some exceptions include ceramic, sedimentary stone, and highly radioactive materials such as uranium, which SCP-3961's secretions will not attempt to break down or consume.

If isolated samples of SCP-3961-2 are simply "fed" an object, it will just expand in size. However, should a secondary object come into contact with SCP-3961-2 during the consumption process, and is subjected to 200 volts of electricity or higher, the original object that made contact with SCP-3961-2 will be converted into the material of the added object after it is fully engulfed, along with any physical properties or markings. (See Addendum 3961-A.)

Additional Notes: A prominent, low-frequency humming noise can be heard about 1.6km from SCP-3961's epicenter. While this sound causes no life-threatening effects to on-site personnel, it can cause a sense of unease and dread to those unfamiliar with it. And although it has been unofficially agreed upon that SCP-3961 is generating this sound, no source has never been located, as the sound does not change in volume so long as affected personnel are within it's range. It is as if the area that the sound is heard in is taking up physical space, much like any sort of matter would, rather than travel outwards from a point in space. As such, all attempts to dampen the sound have proven ineffective.

Following the events of Incident 3961-05, use of live samples and subjects for scheduled testing has been deemed to be extremely dangerous, and has since then been discontinued. (See Addendum 3961-B.)

SCP-3961's "Sonic Hum."

Addendum 3961-A: Multiple recorded tests using several different materials and samples.

Test 1a
Sample A: An ordinary Honeycrisp apple.
Sample B: A single unmarked gold coin.
Results: The apple was introduced to a sample of SCP-3961-2, which began the conversion process upon contact. During the consumption process, a mechanical arm released Sample B onto the sample, and after fully engulfing Sample A, SCP-3961-2 began converting it into solid gold.

Test 1b
Sample A: A single unmarked gold coin.
Sample B: An ordinary Honeycrisp apple.
Results: Sample A took on the properties of Sample B, and became a disc-shaped fruit with red skin and a white interior.

Test 2
Sample A: A jade figurine of a western dragon.
Sample B: A glass vase with a simple repeating pattern painted on the exterior.
Results: After Sample B was introduced during the consumption process, Sample A took on the properties of the vase, and was fully converted into glass. The painted patterns from Sample B were also present, and wrapped around the figurine accordingly.

Test 3
Sample A: 10kg of solid radioactive waste.
Sample B: N/A
Results: SCP-3961-2 made no attempt to break down or absorb Sample A.
