Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: When not being used for testing, SCP-XXXX is to be fitted with a specially made set of bookends and kept within a Safe-Class Locker Since incident XXXX/1, SCP-XXXX is contained within safe anomaly testing room 309-A (explain that it cant be moved at this time). Testing is suspended pending (the creation/(devisement isnt a word) of a plan to change which objects are the current bookend!! safely (bad idea replan)). (once containment within security locker can be established, no less than 3 instances of SCP-XXXX-1 must remain within the fancy bookends).

Description: SCP-XXXX is the collective designation for a row of 17 a variable number of books (currently 184, with individual instances designated SCP-XXXX-1 through -184 in order of retrieval) affected by and affecting any set of matching items they are placed between (referred to as bookends). If either bookend is separated from the row, additional instances will manifest to fill in the resulting empty space. Instances that manifest vary in size based on the amount of space given between bookends. If an SCP-XXXX instance is removed from the row, the remaining instances will collapse inward to fill in the empty space, pulling the bookends in with them.

Individual instances tend to contain pertinent information, but this information can only be accessed by removing the instance from the row, as non-intrusive scanning attempts fail. Instances also lack spine labels, making it impossible to judge possible contents ahead of time.

Addendum XXXX.1 - Test Log: Abridged log of tests on SCP-XXXX
Action Result Notes
Single instance removed from row. SCP-XXXX instance retrieved was titled "Discovering New Places!" and content included pictures of various cities around the word and encyclopedic descriptions of them. Test was performed shortly after recovery. Instance designated SCP-XXXX-1.
Single instance removed from row. SCP-XXXX instance was titled "Instructions for New Bookkeepers" and described a process by which new books can be retrieved and distributed to readers. Instance designated SCP-XXXX-2.
Bookend pulled approximately 3 cm away from SCP-XXXX. cell-content cell-content

Addendum XXXX.2 - Incident XXXX/1: At the end of (whatever first test session), the final book was removed from the bookends, causing an additional 183 books to manifest between the last book and the walls of the test room. This effect does not clearly match previously observed effects and at this time is poorly understood, but it is hypothesized that taking the last book out of the bookends has the same effect as simultaneously removing both bookends from the final book.

Subsequently, the book was removed from the row, causing the walls of the testing chamber to be pulled inwards due to SCP-XXXX's anomalous effect. To avoid further damage to the site, further testing of the object or any other tests in that room are postponed until SCP-XXXX can be safely removed (from exerting their effect on the walls?). For posterity, the final book was titled "Dealing With Internal Structural Damage". (definitely need to rewrite all of this)

OOC NOTES: figure out how to specify specific containment locations/lockers etc and rooms, fix designations to flow naturally, make sure that the books that are given numerical designation and the ones that don't still add up.
