Item #: SCP-5797

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5797 is to be mixed into 9.4 liters of whole human blood and continuosly pumped through a tubing circuit. The circuit is to consist of a sealed torus piping loop measuring 82,5 cm in revolution radius (from center of overall ring circumference to the center of the piping) per 5 cm in internal piping diameter. The tubing is to be equiped with a series of 4 horizontal centrifugal pumps inserted into and equally spaced throughout sections of the loop to allow for continuous circulation of SCP-5797.1 Each pump is to be capable of delivering a pumping power of 2160 kW minimum,2 and total pumping pressure of the fluid is to remain at 208.05 ± 2.50 bar at all times, measured with 8 sensors uniformely distributed at the inlet and discharge nozzles of each pump. Pressure readings are to feed a controller set to adjust pumps’ power and stabilize pressure with minimal oscillation.

The circuit is to be mounted horizontaly on a vertical support pole, attached to a robust electric motor capaple of rotating the ensemble at angular velocities of 2361 ± 15 RPM. In case of failure of any number of centrifugal pumps, the motor is to be activated automatically to provide the piping unit with remaining necessary rotational energy.3 Emergency activation of this electric motor is to take place in the event internal pressure of the piping falls below 205.55 bar at any point.

The piping unit is to be coated with thermal insulation layers composed of a reflective surface and a fire-resistant polyurethane foam. Above the pumping circuit, a heating unit is to be installed, composed of 25 silicon carbide heating elements uniformely distributed and inserted into the tubing, and 5 temperature sensors interspaced between thermal elements to provide the heating system with current measurings. The heating unit is to be activated in case of simultaneous failure of previous methods. Upon activation, the heating components are set to maintain a uniform fluid temperature of 5.40 ± 0.05 ºC above ambient temperature at all times. For swift containment response and avoidance of fluid spontaneous reaction, heating elements are to be able to provide up to 11 kW per heating element, delivering the required energy in less than a second. During normal operation of the heating unit, 20 elements are to be active and 5 are to be in standby for redundancy.

All three containment components –pumps, motor and heating elements– are supplied by a triple redundant set of energy sources, composed of:

  • The standard critical on-site electric power supply line (itself provided with its own fail-safes as per Site-██ specifications);
  • A set of batteries with sufficient charge for continuous functioning of all units over a seven-day period minimum;
  • A diesel-powered electric generator.

The whole unit is to be housed in a 4-meters high chamber with standard blast resistant doors. All components in direct contact with SCP-5797 are to be constructed of SAE 316L stainless steel or approved equivalent highly corrosion-resistant alloy. The apparatus is to be emptied, disassembled and checked for heat, chemical and mechanical stress on a two-weeks basis,4 with all sensors checked every 12 hours and substituted every 36 hours maximum.

Direct heating of the fluid is the last resort for containment due to the nature of the item's composition. In the event of total containment failure, the chamber is to be flooded with combustible gases and ignited5 the containment wing is to be evacuated of non-essential personnel, the chamber flooded with explosion-absorbant foams with the use of pressurized hooses connected to the chamber's vents, and emergency personnel dispatched to the area with flamethrowers to initiate flame irradiation of the piping. Upon fluid stabilization, any leaked portion of SCP-5797 is to be collected using a vacuum pump by a subject protected in a heat-resistant suit. Collected material will be temporarily housed inside a steel barrel and manually heated by incendiary weaponry and blowtorches until a provisory containment housing is restored. The restablished housing must have at least one of all three containment units fully operational, and continous monitoring by emmergency personnel is obligatory for any necessary irradiation until all autonomous systems are back online.

Failure in restorage of SCP-5797's energy requirements may result in damages equal to and potentially beyond catastrophic Site destruction.

Description: SCP-5797 is a volume originally measuring approximately 700 mL, with a minimal stable volume of 655 mL, or 728.36 g6, of anomalous whole human blood. The casing tubing unit is non-anomalous and has been designed by the Foundation for effective containment. The contents of the unit, however, show a number of anomalous properties uncharacteristic of typical blood.

Its composition is spontaneously variable and may at any time include a large number of substances foreign and hazardous to the human organism. Some notable examples detected to date, but not limited to, are:

  • Combustibles: nitroglycerin, hydrazine, arsine, mixtures consistent with kerosene, diesel oil, gasoline and (rarely) crude oil;
  • Acids: sulphuric, nitric, perchloric, oxalic, citric, phosphoric, pyrophosphoric and other polyphosphoric acids;
  • Large and complex organic monomers, oligomers and small segments of reticulated polymers, where nitrogen and oxygen are abundant heteroatoms. Compounds are often structurally unstable;
  • Trace amounts of radioisotopes of elements such as polonium, cesium and lead;
  • Other toxic compounds observed: hydrogen cyanide, chlorine, fluorine, white phosphorus, germane, ammonia.

Normal biological components of whole blood are also present, but all cellular activity has been annihilated by the aggressive chemicals dissolved. The mixture is a thick, viscous liquid, bearing a dark brown color and an acute pungent odor. Continuous analysis of SCP-5797's composition reveals a complex behavior of changes in chemical species present, with concentrations greatly increasing and decreasing in an intricate fashion currently unexplained. Compounds and elements seem to emerge and dissipate from solution without being products or reagents of known chemical reactions. Postulated explanations for the presence of such chemicals involve the metachemically-mediated transmutation of the mixtures's components, a process not yet directly attested but inferred and theorized by Foundation metachemists.7 Limited current analyses suggest that such influences on material space derive from fluctuations in unspecified metaphysical agents, which act to disturb and influence orthophysical phenomena.8

SCP-5797 shows a trend to generate a composition that is energetically dense and naturally unstable whenever energy is released to the environment, in what is supposed to be an attempt to maintain an internal energetic equilibrium at approximately 209,200 J above its frame of reference and immediate surroundings.

Consequently, SCP-5797 may become highly flammable and explosive once it starts to lose energy. Decreases in thermal, kinetic, chemical potential and/or nuclear energy may prompt chemical changes that result in violent combustion, leading to deflagration and detonation of the blood. Once its energy is restored in any form, the mixture becomes stable once again.
SCP-5797's methods of autonomously renewing its energy content include, but are not limited to:

  • Heating of fluid due to absorption of radiation from radioisotopes in the mixture;
  • Acceleration of fluid particles due to exotermic chemical reactions between components, including violent explosion of combustible chemicals;
  • Heating of fluid due to exotermic chemical reactions between components, including violent explosion of combustible chemicals;
  • Increase in concentration of radioisotopes to elevate the average nuclear binding energy of species;
  • Increase in mass resulted from additional material being manifested in the blood (only effective and, so far, observed at relativistic speeds).

Thus, SCP-5797 will always direct its transmutation capabilities to the production of easily obtainable energy contained in various media and readily available for realease. SCP-5797 shows a tendency of containing most of its energy in the form of kinetic and thermal energy rather than chemical or nuclear, as the substances contributing to these types are commonly unstable and react or decay, generating heat, static pressure and motion. Despite this, a variable concentration of these unstables species is always present. How SCP-5797 manages to maintain stability and not spontenously release energy from naturaly reactive chemicals is not entirely understood, but believed to be due to a sequence of reactions [REDACTED] do not participate in the increase of energy content, but seem to function as stabilizers for various exotermic processes. Research on these quasiparticles is pending further advances in ontological
chemistry.

SCP-5797 shows a series of potentially adverse and/or exploitable effects when dilluted in the bloodstream of a living human being. Effects are atributed to SCP-5797's extreme and variated composition9, and include:

  • General increase in cardiac frequency and heart power output, reaching up to 5 times normal blood pressure;
  • General expansion of blood vessels and stimulation of blood production. Large arteries and veins may increase 1.5 times in radius, while arteriole, capillary and venule vessels may expand up to 5 times in radius. Blood volume may double in subjects;
  • Accelerated metabolism and cellular activity. Subjects may consume all of their body fat in a few hours;
  • Increased firing frequency of neurons and other brain activities, resulting in superior performance in cognitive tasks and higher intellectual scores;10
  • Extreme anxiety, paranoia, psychotic behavior and other symptoms of mental agitation;
  • Restlessness, increased alertness and strength, tremors, seizures and other symptoms of physical agitation;
  • Highly elevated body temperature, often leading to muscle and other tissues "cooking" from the inside out. Extreme cases may result in severe burns and carbonization of the skin. At these stages, smoke and steam are often observed emanating from subjects;
  • Decreased skeletal mass due to dissolution of mineralized bone tissue;
  • Elevated chances of internal hemorrhagy, cerebral aneurysm, hemorrhagic stroke, spontaneous combustion and spontaneous detonation.
