Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5231 is currently uncontained, and containment efforts are focused on finding a way to reverse the anomalies effect. A global state of emergency has been issued from the World Health Organization declaring a phase 6 pandemic of a new strain of Zika virus. Cooperating governments are to broadcast that 80% of the population is infected. All reported birth defects are to be attributed to this pandemic, and pregnancies are to be discouraged completely until SCP-5231 has been contained. A majority of national governments have agreed to help the Foundation in decreasing the birth rate for now, with notable exceptions in North Korea, Spain, and Mexico.

Due to event-5000-alpha related to SCP-5231, there is an ongoing partial SK-class "Broken Masquerade" scenario the general population of the world is now aware of the Global Occult Coalition, but remain unaware of the SCP-Foundation or its functions. Discussions on the future of the GOC are underway with the UN.

Description: SCP-5231 is a non-coding region of DNA found on chromosome 19 of all humans. SCP-5231 appears non-anomalous in its sequence, but has so far been identical in all human genomes sequenced. Normally, the region of the genome containing SCP-5231 is wound around a histone. This histone has been found to have anomalous 4th-dimensional properties, despite appearing to be transcribed from the same gene as non-anomalous histones found throughout the rest of the genome. Investigation into the extent of this histones reach into 4th-dimensional space is ongoing.

The effects of SCP-5231 appear only when the histone is not present in the cells of a human, referred to as an SCP-5231-1 instance, despite no translation or transcription of the gene occurring. Offspring of an SCP-5231-1 instance will inherit non-genetic traits from their parents. The full extent of what is heritable is unknown, but can include injuries, physical malformations, mental illnesses, personality traits, knowledge, skills, and memories. The effect of SCP-5231 grows with each subsequent generation of SCP-5231-1 generations.

Discovery: SCP-5231 was categorized as an extranormal event that occurred in the tow of Bicaz, Romania on March 21, 1922. The full extent of SCP-5231 was not discovered until 23 years later. See previous versions for full history of the anomaly.

Extranormal Event 5000

Event Description: A large red flash visible from towns up to 50 miles away for up to 30 minutes was reported coming from the mountain village of Bicaz in the Eastern Carpathians. Foundation agents dispatched from Bucharest found all residents unconscious, except for 4 women that were all undergoing labour at the time of discovery despite later claims that only 3 were known to be pregnant at the time, and none close to birth. No cause of the flash was discovered.

Follow-up Actions Taken: All Bicaz residents evaluated for health and were found to have no memories of the event. All were released with no anomalies found. Town put under Foundation surveillance for possible reoccurrence.

Special Containment Procedures: The town of Bicaz, Romania is to be quarantined under standard Foundation protocol SE43. Entrance into the Bicaz quarantined zone is to be limited to Level 3/5000 personnel in BSL4 positive pressure suits. Residents of Bicaz are to undergo monthly physical examinations. Any resident with an injury or incurable disease that significantly worsen the persons standard of living are to be sterilized.

Children of Bicaz residents are to be medically evaluated for manifestations of SCP-5000.

Description: SCP-5000 is a heritable anomaly present in the populace of Bicaz, Romania. When a person affected by SCP-5000 has a child, the child will have several traits from their parents that are not genetic. This includes bodily damage, psychological damage, and in one instance memories. Currently, transfer of SCP-5000 appears to only be vertical and not horizontal, but as it is hard to diagnose precautions are still advised. It is unknown how the anomaly manifests or chooses which traits to pass down to the offspring of someone affected.

SCP-5000-10: My parents told me I had to or I wouldn't get to play with Carl this afternoon.

Agent Gregory: Well I'll make sure to tell your parents you should get to play with Carl as much as you want, if you just answer some questions I have for you. Should be easy enough for a smart kid like you, right?

SCP-5000-10: Right!

Agent Gregory: Now I've hear that you've been telling some interesting stories Costi. About a big red flash in the sky, is that right?

SCP-5000-10: Oh you mean the light! Yeah, I remember seeing it… I don't know when but I remember it! Clearly! It was at night and it made the entire town look like it was day again, only redder.

Agent Gregory: When you remember it Costi, do you remember anything else besides the light itself? Anything else strange about that night?

SCP-5000-10: Oh yes I remember quite a lot. I'm good at remembering things. Better than all my friends! Even Carl. I can remember the whole multiplication table already!

Agent Gregory: Wait, aren't you only 4 years… Nevermind. Costi, I would like you to tell me more about the night of the flash… I mean the light. What else do you remember?

SCP-5231-10: The light was sooooo bright! And red! It was in like a… a ring! All around the town. and when it was done there was a second light, just for a second. It wasn't as bright and it was blue instead, and it spread outwards forever.

(To this point no second blue light had been reported. Investigation into the validity of this statement is ongoing)

Agent Gregory: A second blue light… what else can you remember Costi?

SCP-5000-10: Well there was a man I remember seeing right before the light went away. He was wearing some weird red clothes I've never seen before and he was holding something up in the air towards the light. It was like a big wad of skin or something! I don't know what it was but it was super gross. Then the light went away and I couldn't see him anymore.

Agent Gregory: This man Costi, do you remember anything else about him?

SCP-5000-10: Hmm… I don't think so…. wait! I remember! He had this really scary face. Like a bunch of worms were squirming all over it! I don't think I like this man.

Agent Gregory: Me neither Costi, me neither.

Children of Bicaz residents are to be medically evaluated for manifestations of SCP-5000. All children born to Bicazian residents present at the manifestation of SCP-5231 are to be interviewed for memories of the event and POI-5231-01.

Description: SCP-5000 is a ritual that causes all traits of a human to be passed down to their offspring despite no genetic link.

Addendum 1: On 06/13/1930 a Neo-Sarkic temple was raided by MTF Beta-7 "Maz Hatters" as part of a continued investigation into the origin of SCP-5231 with agent Gregory. An individual matching PoI-5231's description was detained, but has so far refused to respond when interviewed. A Sarkic grimoire was found in the possession of PoI-5231 that contains a ritual that may have caused SCP-5231. An expert has been translated from ancient Sarkic below.
