Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a lead box suspended in the middle of an 8 x 8 x 8 meter room with walls lined with lead. All personnel C-class or higher, or D-class unless specifically ordered to got closer, must stay at least 10 meters away from this room at all times. Instances of SCP-XXXX-1must not come into contact with each other, due to the events outlined in Addendum-XXXX-1.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a leather bound copy of H.P. Lovecraft’s short story, Call of Cthulhu, that is approximately 15 by 23 centimeters. SCP-XXXX emits an anomalous energy, hereby known as SCP-XXXX-1, that has mind altering effects on all sentient beings exposed to it, with the exception of exceptionally intellectual individuals. The reason for this exception is unknown. Testing has found that heavy metals, such as lead and gold, can nullify the effects of this energy. Effects of this energy can be separated into three (3) different stages. The first stage occurs after subjects are first exposed to SCP-XXXX-1. Subjects develop a sudden urge to read SCP-XXXX, intensifying the longer subjects are exposed. The second stage occurs when subjects begin to read SCP-XXXX. Subjects suddenly refuse to stop reading SCP-XXXX and become extremely violent if separated from it. The third stage occurs only after subjects have finished reading SCP-XXXX. During this stage subjects will begin calling themselves cthulhu, presumably believing themselves to be the god from the story bearing the same name, as well as frantically searching for R'lyeh, a location from the short story, claiming it is their home. After reaching the third stage subjects are incapable of perceiving their previous identity. Subjects will deny that they are human, and upon seeing them selves (via photos, reflections, etc.) will become enraged. They will begin harming their own bodies claiming that "it's not their true form" and attempting to modify it to better fit the description of Cthulhu given in the story. Body modifications made by subjects include but are not limited to: sewing tentacles (both artificial and of real animals) to their face, gluing leather wings to their back, and getting full body tattoos of scales. Subjects will often claim to be able to telepathically communicate with others, but only one case of this is confirmed, and it is currently unknown if this ability came from SCP-XXXX.
