An instance of an SCP-XXXX egg forming within the ceiling of an affected homestead; the weight of the egg caused the considerable protrusion seen in the photo.
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: Early identification and extraction of SCP-XXXX instances while they are in their egg or nymphal phase remains the top priority in containment procedures. Successfully extracted egg or nymphal instances are to be placed in incinerator chambers for the purposes of neutralization. Chambers must be regularly inspected for any cracks or structural faults.
If an SCP-XXXX instance hatches, an alternative course of action must be taken. When dealing with an adult SCP-XXXX, personnel are advised to operate in teams of eight to twelve, armed with conventional weaponry and mobile incineration units. Personnel are to evacuate individuals within the place of residence the adult SCP-XXXX instance is located under a suitable pretense, after which the adult instance may be neutralized. Care must be taken to not penetrate the external larval sac located on its lower abdominal region; should it be damaged, personnel must use the mobile incineration unit to completely burn the place of residence. In either case, Class-D amnestics must be administered to individuals that lived with SCP-XXXX.
Communities, where instances of SCP-XXXX are found, are to be closely monitored by MTFs Y-52 “Cater Duty” and Y-99 “Altar Boys” in order to report any potential spread of further instances. MTF Y-36 “Party Crashers” are tasked with responding to SCP-XXXX instances. Should the number of SCP-XXXX instances exceed ██, MTF J-35 “Pest Control” is to be notified for the purposes of containing the threat via carefully coordinated [DATA EXPUNGED] and mass [DATA EXPUNGED]. As SCP-XXXX primarily manifests in isolated rural communities, further action is unnecessary; however, if an instance forms in a region with several interconnected communities (be it via proximity or infrastructure), MTF J-35 “Pest Control” is authorized to administer Class-A amnestics on surrounding communities via aerial application. It is recommended that agricultural aircraft be used to minimize suspicion.
Description: SCP-XXXX is an anomalous entity that manifests in the homes of various individuals or families who have recently lost a loved one. After a 1 to 3 week period from the death of the individual, an instance of SCP-XXXX will manifest in the highest level of the place of residence; in cases of single-floored residences or those without higher level rooms such as attics, it will directly form within the ceiling. The life cycle of an SCP-XXXX instance is identical to that of the Cicadidae family, with clearly defined egg, nymphal, and adult phases; however, there is no instar phase of development, with nymphal SCP-XXXX instances molting only once before becoming an adult.
SCP-XXXX will always first manifest as an egg; over a period of roughly 6 weeks, the egg will grow to a circumference of roughly 55 inches before hatching. At this stage, SCP-XXXX enters its nymphal phase. In this phase of development, SCP-XXXX appears as a large Cicada nymph, between 3 and 4 feet in height. The head of SCP-XXXX resembles that of the deceased family member, but with mandibles in lieu of a set of human teeth, and eyes that are visually and biologically identical to the eyes of insects within the Cicadidae family. The thorax of a nymphal SCP-XXXX is translucent and filled with a non-anomalous embryonic fluid, while the abdomen is grossly enlarged and distended. Vocalizations of a nymphal SCP-XXXX instances lack formal language, being described as a “sustained shriek;” upon its first vocalization, individuals within the homestead will perceive the nymphal SCP-XXXX to be their deceased family member and treat it as such. Further vocalizations prompt affected individuals to supply the entity with disproportionate amounts of food, often to their own detriment. As nymphal SCP-XXXX instances can take anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks before molting into an adult, deaths from starvation are not uncommon; should a member of the affected family die during this phase, they are [DATA EXPUNGED] and fed to SCP-XXXX.
Upon molting, an adult instance of SCP-XXXX displays significant physiological differences from a nymphal instance. Adults stand upright bipedally anywhere from 8 to 10 feet, utilizing their forelegs and middle legs in an offensive capacity. The abdomen and thorax fuse to form an external larval sac on the lower abdomen region, covering the genitalia. The face remains largely unchanged, save for significant amounts of viscera and blood which leak from the mouth, nostrils, eyes, and ears of SCP-XXXX; analysis of the blood reveals it contains equal amounts of hemoglobin and heterogeneous hemolymph fluid, and analysis of the viscera reveals that it is partially digested internal organs. It is theorized this is due to SCP-XXXX-1 cannibalizing SCP-XXXX from within in order to feed and grow; fatalities occur in roughly 3% of instances. In this stage, vocalizations become constant and change in pitch and tone, mimicking a cicada song. Each SCP-XXXX instance recorded thus far has had a unique song.
Autopsies of neutralized instances prior to incineration suggests that the embryonic fluid found within the thorax of a nymphal SCP-XXXX interacts with the distended abdomens in order to generate a large, indiscriminate number of SCP-XXXX-1 instances, which resemble generic Cicadidae; upon eruption, instances of SCP-XXXX-1 will consume any surviving members within its place of residence, before swarming into surrounding areas and attempt to consume any and all flora and fauna they encounter.
It is unclear as to why SCP-XXXX seems to manifest most commonly in isolated rural communities, but it is theorized that this occurs due to a survival strategy. Simply put, an instance of SCP-XXXX has the best chance of surviving and giving birth to SCP-XXXX-1 if it can do so with as little outside interference as possible. SCP-XXXX, although capable of causing severe injury, is physically weak; its chitinous carapace does not thicken proportionally to its size and can easily be damaged or penetrated via blunt weapons or small arms fire.
It has been suggested by various scientific personnel that a link exists between SCP-XXXX, SCP-2852 and SCP-3004; however, further research is necessary before a conclusive relationship can be established.
