SCP-XXXX The Death Clock

Item # : SCP-XXXX

Object Class : Euclid

Special Containment Procedure : SCP-XXXX should be kept in a 50cm x 50cm x 50cm vault, with walls at least 15 centimeters thick including an intern layer 5 centimeters of any soundproof, sound-deterring material. Access to the object is limited to Level-2 researchers, andlimited to the validation of the lead Researcher at the time.

Description : SCP-XXXX is an electrical alarm clock. It is 15 cm wide, 15 cm long and 8 cm thick, with a rectangular shape and two green-glowing screens : one on top of the case and one on front. Above the second one are five buttons, each one placed under a pictogram suggesting that they should be used to power on and off the object, change the displayed hour mannually, set up an alarm, snooze and silence the alarm. None of theses buttons actually work their intended functions.

No brand or logo can be seen anywhere on the object. Its origin are unknown, as well as its date of creation. It needs two standard AAA batteries to work, and they give it two weeks of battery life ; his anomalous property works wether or not batteries are inserted in the object.

The screen on the front gives the current hour of Paris with accute precision, even when turned on after a long period of inactivity. The one on top isn't electrically linked to any other intern components. If any human being (therefore refered to as SCP-XXXX-A) presses any button on the front of the clock, two hours and dates will appear, in the format year/month/day ; hour/minute. The first one is the exact time of birth of SCP-XXXX-A ; the second one shows his time of death in 100% of cases.

SCP-XXXX came into possession of the Foundation on April 3rd, 19██ when an underground agent reported several distressed calls coming from an elderly civilian to the police station, claiming that he thought he was going to die. When confronted, he admitted reluctantly that he had seen the date appear on his clock. After his accidental death (due to the fall of a tile from his roof which fractured his skull) at the precise hour he had announced, the Foundation took possession of the clock. Class-A amnestics were administered to all police agents.

Experiment Log XXXX-1 : it was immediately theorized that the second date appearing when a button was pressed is the time of death of the subject. This theory was confirmed after 10 D-class, chosen for their usual mockery of safety protocols, were asked to press a random button. They all died at the time predicted in a vast number of ways (ranging from heart attack and other organ failures to indigestion, domestic accidents and containment breaches by other SCPs). Refer to the document in annex for the full detailed list.

Experiment Log XXXX-2 : Junior Researcher D. W█████ accidentally pressed the "Snooze" button while removing the object from its vault, and learned he was supposed to die in two days and five hours. The whole research team, along with site security, tried their best to avoid any risk at given time. SCP-XXXX-A was enclosed in a guarded, isolated room, wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything from 2 hours prior to the event and had a whole medical team on standby ready to intervene at the least alert. At the right hour, he suddenly collapsed and died in seven minutes of intense cerebral bleeding. He had no medical condition leading to suspect such an event.

Note : knowing of what is going to happen does not seem to be a way to prevent it, either from SCP-XXXX-A or from any outlooker. - Dr. Kechar

Experiment Log XXXX-3 : several animals (pertaining to all section and sub-section of the animal reign ; see annex document for full list) and plants (idem) where used to press the buttons. Nothing happened.

Experiment Log XXXX-4 : subject D-56321 was instructed to press the "Alarm" button and to read out loud the dates that appeared. He was supposed to die one month, two days and six hours after the event. A security guard proceeded to shoot D-56321 in the head, emptying his magazine, on order of Dr. Vilmin. Much to all the present's surprise, all bullets seemed to miss. The guard then pulled out a knife and walked toward SCP-XXXX-A, but slipped and struck his head on the floor, fainting immediately. After the guard was removed from the room, a grenade was launched in the room, only to apparently malfunction and produced no explosion. SCP-XXXX-A was then left alone in the room and died of thirst six days later.

Note : it IS possible to kill someone before their "term" has come ; it is simply very difficult to do so. - Dr. Kechar

Addendum XXXX-1 : Dr Kechar, who gave the order of locking D-56321 up which ended up in his death, died on the precise day and hour when D-56321 was supposed to die, according to SCP-XXXX. Further experiment proved that if SCP-XXXX-A dies before his "term", his killer (or the person closest to fullfilling the role) dies in his place, including if this killer was supposed to die sooner.

Note : this is worrying. There are two theories as to how this anormality is possible : either SCP-XXXX predicts the future, which would have huge philosophical implications ; or it provoks the deaths by some unknown mean. We do not understand how this happens, nore how this "transfer" of time of death works. In fact, we understand pretty much nothing of this artifact. - Dr. Vilmin

Experiment Log XXXX-5 : Dr. Jack Bright, considered some kind of immortal, was asked to press any button. The dates that appeared were the date of birth of the body he occupied and the date where Jack Bright began "inhabiting" it. When SCP-936-1 was used to press a button, the dates of birth and death of the original body of Dr. Bright were displayed.

Experiment Log XXXX-6 : request is made to authorize a cross-test between SCP-XXXX and SCP-073, considered immortal, to see what the clock would display.

Note : Request absolutely denied. Whatever event could cause the death of Cain would likely be an XK or CK. If this thing has the power to provoke it, I want none of it ; if it can only predict it but there is nothing we can do, I do not want to know about it. - O5-9

Further testing is suspended until more is known about the functionment of SCP-XXXX.
