Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: Former C-class Foundation researcher Dr. Alex ████████ is to be kept within a standard humanoid containment module located within site Site-06-3. The subject is to be kept on a life support system at all times, and is to be constantly monitored by on-site medical personnel. Under no circumstances should Foundation personnel allow this individual to perish.

Description: SCP-XXXX is an entity who exists only within the dreams of afflicted individuals. The entity can only exist within the psyche of one individual at a time, and cannot relocate to another individual's mind until its current host has perished. Once this occurs, SCP-XXXX will choose another host, seemingly at random, and manifest itself within their dreams. SCP-XXXX has no physical body within this plane of reality, and is thus exceedingly difficult gather information on. The only existing data on this entity comes from the accounts of those who have at one point been its hosts.

Once SCP-XXXX begins to appear within an individual's dreams, that individual will suffer a slow deterioration of their mental state, followed by the appearance of physical symptoms culminating in the subject's eventual death1. The progression of symptoms within afflicted individuals follows a consistent, uniform pattern, documented below:

0-3 months after initial contact: Individuals begin to see SCP-XXXX in their dreams. Once SCP-XXXX is first witnessed by a subject, they are no longer able to sleep without having a dream in which the entity makes an appearance. Non-anomalous psychological symptoms consistent with being placed in a highly stressful situation, such as paranoia, anxiety, and irritability typically manifest themselves during this stage. SCP-XXXX will neither interact with its new host or deliberately interfere with the course of their dreams during this stage, instead simply appearing within the background.

3-9 months after initial contact: SCP-XXXX begins conversing with its host whenever they meet during the hosts' dreams. The majority of these conversations involve the SCP trying to convince its host that the world of dreams which they share is reality, while the physical world is nothing but a dream-like realm filled with hostile, human-like entities who seek to hurt the host. While most subjects have been hesitant to accept such a concept, it has been noted that due to the anomalous psychological effects of this SCP, every known host of SCP-XXXX has come to accept this worldview.

During this stage, afflicted persons often become highly irritable, paranoid, and mentally unstable. In their deluded psychosis, subjects are often extremely wary of others and suspicious of their motives. Subjects at this stage of SCP-XXXX affliction present a significant danger to themselves and others, often harming those around them due to perceived notions of a large conspiracy at work.

9-12 months after initial contact: Subjects begin to experience a rapid cognitive decline at this stage. Their problem-solving, linguistic, and reasoning skills slowly become non-existent at this stage as all higher cognitive functions are eroded away. Their emotional range becomes severely stunted, with subjects eventually only being capable of expressing feelings of blind rage.

Approximately 16 months after contact, SCP-XXXX hosts will begin to experience seizures, coma, and eventual brain death.
